wi-fi sync not working

After MONTHS of screwing around with this, I have noticed that my iPhone AND iPOD touch are syncing via wifi, most of the time, however, I keep reading in places that automatic syncing will happen when the iPod is connected to power and the network. Well, everytime I connect my iPOD to the power (docking station) it won't sync even manually. Keeps saying cannot do it while an accessory is attached. What other "power" is there besides connecting to the **** computer directly which totally defeats the purpose of this? APPLE, get with it and fix this crap!

Just a quick update. I have done a "poor man's dual band" setup.

DSL modem is connected to Netcomm 802.11b/g/n wireless router. This supplies the 802.11b/g/ 2.4ghz N signal for iPhone, Xbox360, and anything else.

Then, I connect via ethernet from Netcomm wireless router to my existing Airport Express. Airport Express supplies a pure 802.11 5ghz N signal for my Mac, iPad2, new iPad and AppleTV.

This way, the Mac, iPads and AppleTV always "see" only the Airport Express network, hence WiFi iTunes syncing as well as AirPlay streaming is great, and the 5ghz network with maximum N speed doesn't suffer interference and/or dropouts such as when my microwave is running.

As for the iPhone, I'll just use a cable when I need to, but this way my iPhone and Xbox360 can access the Internet as needed without degrading the connectivity of the Mac, iPads and AppleTV. I don't play online games, I only need connectivity to update or download stuff on Xbox360.

Yes, the disadvantage is double-NAT, but I haven't encountered issues yet.

Hope this helps. Basically, iTunes WiFi sync and AirPlay is ~happiest~ when it is served ~only~ by Airport Express or Airport Extreme.

So this my first ever post on how to help someone fix a problem and it's mainly because I had the same problem and it frustrated the **** out of me for the past few months!

So after trail and error and reading numerous fixes, I think the main issue is the channel your router is on. Now I am not a professional at any of this, but it was clear to me after switching back and forth between channels that this was the issue. After I had gotten new Internet service with comcast my channel was set to 6. Yesterday I had the weird idea to try and change channels to see if that would help. So I switched it to 1 and nothing happened. Then I switched it to 11 and boom! My iPhone started syncing wirelessly automatically.

Like I said, this may or may not be the fix that works for everyone, but it worked for me.

Simple Fix to XP and Apple Mobile Device not syncing:

Disconnect device from Computer. Inside Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Services, Select Apple Mobile Device. Click Stop the Service. After Service is stopped, click Start the Servicce. After Service Started

again, open iTunes and connect device.

This worked the first time after trying everything posted on here!

iMac-Lion, sync by WiFi to my iPhone4 and iPad (Retina-display)

My problem was that the iPhone worked but not the new iPad.

By exident my UTP-cable was plugged in and my WiFi was switched on as well.

When I took out my UTP-cable and rebooted all devices than it worked very well.

I tried everything and eventually the only thing that worked was setting up reserved IP addresses for both my computer and my iPhone on the router (I guess iTunes was getting confused with the IP addresses changing all the time). After setting the reserved IP addresses, I did one sync using the cable and after that WiFi sync worked perfectly.

I tried everything as well for my iPad1. WiFi sync fired right up just as soon as I gave it a reserved IP address based on my iPad's Mac address. My iMac, iPhone, and everything else on my network already had reserved IP addresses. My only difficulty was trying to determine my iPad's Mac address with the latest Airport Utility, version 6.0. I couldn't find a way to display the Mac address for my already-DHCP-connected iPad either on the iPad or the Airport Utility. Fortunately, Airport Utility verson 5.6 has this capability. Go figure! 😕

Running Win 7, tried almost everything in this post finally got to the Dee Texas post and it fixed the problem. Stoping and Starting the Apple Mobile Device service then restarting iTunes fixed the Wi-Fi greyed out synch now problem.

i have an airport extreme but i dont understand what that means nothing else is working so i wanna give yours a try. what does that stuff mean in normal people words and how to do it

I'm not sure if you are referring to my post of May 24, but the problem I was having is that I was unable to synch the iPhone with iTunes using my home Wi-Fi network. The Sync Now was grayed out in the iTunes Wi-Fi Synch option on the iPhone, although the iPhone would synch fine with the USB cable. I don't think this has anything to do with an Airport Extreme since that is not a device on my network.

After trying many of the suggestions in this post I finally attempted the fix that was mentioned by Dee Texas on April 29^th and it fixed the problem I was having. This was the post:

Although the fix was posted for XP, it worked exactly the same with Win 7.

Do you know how to do that on a Mac? My problem is that the computer won't recognize it under devices but the sync now on my iPhone will show up correctly and stay stuck on looking for iMac.

After upgrading my desktop to Windows 7, I was having the same issues as the rest of you. My problem was resolved with the combination of adding the TCP/UDP ports mentioned in the first post, starting and stopping the Apple Mobile Device per Dee Texas' reply, and then restarting iTunes.

Since I did both, I wasn't sure if it was just the starting & stopping of the Apple Mobile Device service that fixed the problem, so I turned off the two Firewall exceptions I had created. As soon as I did that, my iPhone disappeared from iTunes. Turned the Firewall exceptions on, and it immediately returned.

As always, YMMV, but the combination of the two fixed my problem on a Win 7 box.

Guys and Gals, I stopped using WiFi sync completely, because as you all can see, it can drive us crazy.

For iPhone and iPad, simply use all that iCloud has to offer, including iCloud backup. The iCloud backup and Restore for iPhone and iPad is actually quite impressive.

For music, just purchase from iTunes Store, otherwise just use iTunes Match. For podcasts, just use an app like iCatcher, once I discovered that I have no more use for syncing with my computer.

My 2 cents, I strongly encourage it. Apple, iPad, iPhone, AppleTV, Mac truly offer us an experience unlike anything else. I don't like nor waste time with any other technology, including Apple tech like WiFi Sync which I believe is extremely problematic.

Also, on the topic of wireless, use Wireless N ~5GHZ~ as far as possible. All new devices can use 5GHZ, except for iPhone 4S, which you can have a separate basic wireless for 2.4GHZ.

Always use WPA2, and never WEP.
