wi-fi sync not working

Hi all,

I have an Intel Mac Mini running 10.5.8 and also a Lenovo Win 7 laptop (Win 7 64 bit). Latest iTunes on both 10.5. I wanted to have the Sync via Wi-Fi to be via my Mac Mini as it's my home theater server, however it appears the option is not listed under iTunes. When I plug my iPhone 3GS and iPad 2 (both upgraded to iOS5) the option IS listed in iTunes on my Lenovo !

So it appears at this stage OSX 10.5.x might not be supported....which is a **** shame. I guess I might have to upgrade my Mac Mini's OS...

ok, wow... yeah, i thought this was already answered in this post... at least, it was for me... perhaps it wasn't clear enough...

...for osx, you need 10.6.8 to get wi-fi sync...

so i guess you powerpc users are kinda outta luck 😟 which ***** 😟

for anyone else on osx, you just need to update to at least 10.6.8

I'm using an iPhone 3GS and a MacBook Air running 10.6.8. Both are connected to the same WiFi network produced by my Time Capsule 7.5.2. I live in an apartment complex, so the Time Capsule is set to Bridge Mode. When I plug the iPhone in by USB, iTunes opens and Devices is shown in the sidebar. A sync begins and works fine. In the summary menu "Sync with this iPhone over WiFi" is selected.

When wired in I can initiate a sync on either end and it goes through fine. But the moment I unplug the iPhone (whether or not I click the eject button), it disappears from the Devices menu. I can't even find it to sync to it from iTunes and syncing from the phone gives the message "Looking for MacBook Air" for about thirty seconds before timing out. The phone can tell whether iTunes is open on the MacBook Air--when it isn't, it doesn't even give me the option to sync and shows the message "Sync will resume when MacBook Air is available." What am I doing wrong?

I have done the steps you proposed and it works great. I love it. But when I close iTunes and restart it, my iDevice is now longer listed. If I connect to USB again and disconnect the iDevice from computer (USB connection) my device is no longer recognized by iTunes!

It only seems - for me - to work after a fresh iTunes install and initial tethered sync. As soon as I restart iTunes, wifi sync no longer works.

It's not working for me at all. I have a MBP with all of the software up to date. I have the Wi-Fi Sync option checked, then I sync my iPhone 4. Then I pull out the usb cord and my iPhone disappears from iTunes. I then connect my iPhone to a charger, and the "Sync Now" is still greyed out. Some one help PLEASE!!! Is there a preference setting in iTunes that needs to be changed??

I also have this problem with my iPad 2. The target iMac is running 10.7.2, the iPad has iOS 5. I've connected the iPad to the iMac, checked the Enable Wi-Fi Sync box, they synced while connected via usb. I disconnect the iPad and go into Settings -> General -> iTunes Wi-Fi Sync and it says "Sync will resume when iMac is available".

Here may be a sticking point. The iMac is dual homed; the ethernet is connected to the internet, but I *do* have the wireless turned on and connected to the same access point as the iPad. Still, no sync. iTunes is set to receive incoming connections in the firewall.

EDIT: Ok after waiting about 10 minutes, the iPad noticed that my iMac was on the network, and finally synced.

iPhone 4, Windows 7. Running iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5. Checked box in iTunes, synced and as soon as I unplug, device dissappears. Rebooted computer, device multiple times. Tried disabling firewall, switching to another wireless router....nothing.

Anyone have any words of wisdom?

Hey all. You can look back at the thread to see exactly what my problems were. They seem to be gone now, however.

I realized my mistake. I was trying to put a large number of songs unto my iDevice (5,000+), and the Wi-Fi sync was just not working. Over last night, I left my iPhone 3GS tethered to my MBP to let it do it's thing (i.e., finish the transfer). When I woke up, I rebooted both devices, and voila, it's doing the Wi-Fi sync now!

To those of you who are trying to sync large amounts of data to fill your iDevice for the first time: just do the big sync via USB, and then do a reboot on your device(s), and see if that works. It did for me!

I am using a Windows 7 pc with iTunes 10.5 and iOS5 on my iPhone 3gs but cannot get the wi-fi sync to work. I have done everything that has been listed to try. I have a check next to the use wi-fi box on my iTunes page and it is turned on in the iphone settings, but it shows the message will sync when computer name is available. I have not beem able to successfully do a backup with the itunes program, I get the message that it cannot backup b/c file may be corrupt or version not supported. I have lost all my photos and contacts. Figured out how to get my contacts back, but photos are all gone. I really wanted this version b/c of the wi-fi sync. Any help getting this to work or getting my photos back would be greatly appreciated.

I am also having trouble with iTunes freezing up and slowing my computer waaaaaay down when it's open. Thanks again for any help.

I have exactly the same problem with iTunes 10.5, WIndows 7, Netgear Wifi router and iPhone 3GS.... Despite I have checked the Wifi synchronisation option in iTunes, iPhones dissapears when unlung it from the USB connection.

A question : if wifi synchronisation works well, is the iOs device supposed to automatically appeard in iTunes when I run iTunes as if was USB-connected ?

Have a MBP running latest version of Lion OSX, running latest version of iTunes and a 3GS with iOS5 installed. After playing around using some of the suggestions in this forum, I finally got the button on the Wi-Fi sync to stop being gray and allow me to press "Sync Now." Unfortunately, it now says "Looking for "my MacBook Pro" for about 60 seconds and then quits looking and the button goes back to saying "Sync Now." Apparently my iPhone cannot find my MBP. I believe this is a bug and will need to be resolved with an iTunes or iOS update.
