Problem backing up iPhone 4 before updating to iOS 5

Hi. Everybody is very nervous at this moment, and everybody is having several of troubles... all of them related to same thing: "Error 3200". But that's not happening to me. I've been trying to find an answer, but no one seems to have my problem... Well, I have downloaded my iOS 5. When I press "Update", you all will know, iTunes makes a backup of your device. So, it starts backing my iPhone 4 up, and 1 minute later, I got an error about the backup (it says -43, I don't know what it is). Then, iTunes asks me if I want to continue, but if I do, I will lose my iPhone 4 content, so, logically, I press "Cancel".

I don't really know what to do, I don't want to lose my data, but it looks like there is no other way to update. I hope someone can help me.

I don't know the exact translation in English, but it happens what I've said. If you want, here's a (Spanish) screenshot:

I solved the problem by ignoring the message. After the upgrade completed, I restored from backup and everything worked perfectly...no problems. Also I might note that I monitored my backup folder (new location) during the upgrade process and the file size was changing, indicating to me that iTunes was backing up my device just fine.

So I don't know what the problem is, but I think you'll be fine if you continue with the upgrade when you receive that message. NOTE: I wouldn't take my word for it unless your case is the same as mine...you have Windows 7 x64 and have remapped the backup folder. This "solution" may not work the same if you have a different system!

Thanks a lot for your help!!! I did that and the process went smoothly, just clicking "Continue" all the time and letting go. Lost the music but now I can sync the iphone again. Now here's my situation; I know I read it here somewhere but can't find where. All I'm missing right now (besides the music) are the apps. How can I have them back? I miss them a lot!!!

Thanks for your help! 😕

Hi All,

I talk with Apple Support. Solution for error code (-1303):

1. Create backup your iPhone.

2. Save the backup folder (eg.: another drive)

3. Click RESTORE button in iTunes -> Your iPhone will updated to iOS5, and will be empty (like when you bought)

4. After restore iTunes ask : Set up as new device or Restore from Backup...

5. If you select Restore from Backup your device will be the same (some minutes later) like before you start the process, except your iPhone has a new iOS5.

Well after my last post, I said I would tell you how it went. It went great ! Removing the symbolic link resolved the error and the update went swimmingly. After using IOS5 for last nearly 24hours, I can say it works great. It feels faster and although it's early days I'm fairly sure my battery life is doing better than usual.

I had the same 1303 problem with a symbolic link. At first the junction point I made was at the MobileSync level. So only my backups were made on my D drive.

To overcome the problem I adjusted the junction point. When the junction point starts at: C:\Users\Patrick\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer and point that folder to an new drive there is no problem with the backup when updating to iOS5.

So the command would look like:

junction "c:\users\patrick\appdata\roaming\Apple Computer" "d:\Apple Computer"

All the iTunes files are placed on the D drive, and the error is gone. Update to iOS5 works great.

I was getting the error -402636788 for days. Prior to that I have not had a sucessful backup for months. I deleted all pictures and many apps, still no luck. Then I followed other threads that indicated previous backups were corrupted, so I deleted all those. Nothing helped, I was getting the same error. Then in this thread someone said to do a reset prior to starting the update. IT WORKED! Hold down the Home button and Power button fore a few seconds till the slider to power down comes up. iOS 5 is now on my iPad 2.

I too had problems backing up my iPhone 4. I ran ithe backup three different times and it went for hours and never really completed the back up that I could tell. My husband went ahead and upgraded the iOS for my phone on my computer and it looks like it synced my iPhone contacts with my Outlook. I have NO phone numbers. I am not much of a techy. Can anyone tell me how to find out if my phone backed up before it dumped all my numbers? And then how to get them back on my phone?
