iOS 5 Upgrade Bricked My iPhone 4 (Stuck in Recovery Mode)

I, like many others, kept getting "An internal error occurred" when trying to upgrade my iPhone 4 to iOS 5. Foolishly, I continued to hit the Update button and try again. It eventually led to my iPhone being in recovery mode. I am now unable to restore the phone due to the ongoing issues with Apple's servers and unable to use the phone because the failed upgrade process placed the phone in recovery mode.

Since Noon central - two hours download. Multiple attemtps and error messages to update. Finally seemed to have updated but now is stuck on hours of restoring content (wish I would have known it was going to wipe out the ipad and iphone). Now, I don't know if settings and data are lost. It is now 8:25 pm and I am completely guessing at the rate of restore that it will be past midnight to completion - whatever that completion is. Lion server disaster - now this. Apple's brand is going down the tubes fast. Apple Vista is what I call this and the Lion server mess. Apple's QA is now a joke. I will never trust them again. Just another Microsoft in the making. How sad!

Meant to also mention that much of the last few hours has nothing to do with the Apple servers being busy. Unacceptably long backups and restore process are not server dependent. This upgrade is a joke. I was an Apple fan and now will never recommend them again. Lion server could have been a fluke. But, this latest incompetent screw up is now showing a trend. At least Microsoft took many years to screw the customer. Why did Apple get so good in the last couple of years and then crash and burn so fast? A deplorable way to represent Jobs achievements and with his recent passing...

Same thing happened to me as well—ended up restoring with my 'trashed' iPhone restore .ipsw file but nearly all of my apps are missing (I had alot, and many folders), though settings seem to be the same. Extremely disappointed in Apple's preparations for this. As someone earlier in this discussion said, it's like they were surprised by how many people have iOS devices—they didn't consider the server load this would cause.

I know little about how this process works, but how can attempting to upgrade even result in phones being sent to recovery mode!?

(iPhone 4, by the way)

Same thing happened to me. Got caught in recovery mode, but it did progress but... It then told me my sim card is not there or it's bad. Went to AT&T check it, not the sim card. The phone is displaying an image I've never seen. Needless to say the phone is bricked. Have an appointment at the apple store tomorrow. We'll see what happens.

I've got 2 other iPhones in the house, not going to upgrade for a few days, don't need 3 bricks in the house.

Be patient. My phone was stuck in recovery-mode for a couple hours...until I did what has been posted before "disconnect phone from comp. Hold down power and home button until phone blinks black. Plug back into comp with buttons remaining pressed down...until USB screen appears on phone. Then iTunes recognizes phone and asks to restore - click restore. Took a few tries for the phone to verify with apple servers. problem was that iOS5 was half installed all the time - putting phone into recovery mode. iOS5 is worth the wait, it's amazing!

iPhone 4 32 GB.

Yeah my update worked fine..Of course it would not restore from backup like everyone else mentioned as well. I don't care much for the backup since I have everything saved in gmail. But iPhone keeps resarting when plugged in. I get a few apps transferred over and then it just randomly resarts disconnecting it from my computer. I plugged in into the regular wall charger earlier and it was doing the same thing just resarting itself every like 5 or so minutes. ***? It was like a light show sitting on my nightstand. Not sure what to do at this point. I guess I'll have to call Apple tomorrow and I haven't updated my wfies yet, I think I'll wait on that one. Let me know what you all find out.

just a thought but make sure that you have done a software update on your mac or laptop ( provided you only apple products) there is a software update that prepares your mac or laptop for the icloud and iOS5 transition among other latest software updates.. do that first then do the update on itunes for you ipad, iphone or ipod touch...

my upgrade went sooth as silk by what i stated above>>
