Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

"Recovery system update required." for Find My Mac -- after already updated!

I've run the latest round of updates on My 2011 MacBook Pro, and I have run into a snag with the new iCloud control panel.

I want to enable the "Find My Mac" feature, but unfortunately I am not able to, as the checkbox is grayed out. There is an error beside the control saying that I need to update the recovery system as per the title of this thread. I actually already *did* do this earlier today, however, and there are no other updates.

What is going on here? Is it possible that the update didn't actually install properly? I was away from the computer at the time it rebooted and would have installed that portion, so I can't tell, but if I look in the update history, I see "Lion Recovery Update 1.0" from today in the list.

Is anyone else having this problem? I wonder if it's just a buggy update 😝 Hopefully this will be fixed soon by Apple in a subsequent update, but I'm curious if there's something I can do in the meantime.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.1), Just updated to 10.7.2, not listed

I had this problem on my MacBook Air (late 2010). Here's how I fixed it...

1) Insert install USB drive which came with my MacBook Air

2) Restart holding down C key

3) Select "English" then click "continue" on the installer screen (don't worry - it won't reinstall the OS. It will just go to the next screen)

4) Choose Disk Utility from the menu - and repair the internal hard drive.

5) Restart

6) Remote install USB drive

7) Download and install the update again from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1464

Thanks to everyone for the information on this. I successfully repaired the disk and reinstalled Lion Recovery update. After this, Find My Mac was available. I have done a post on my site, MacFilos*, to help any of my readers who have had this error.

Thanks again, all.

There seems to be a lot of betting going on on this thread. I've very dilligently done the following:

- Checked Location Services were enabled under Privacy (they initially weren't)

- Ran disk utility and repaired the disk (which did show some faults)

- Reinstalled Lion Recovery Update

When this didn't change anything, I installed the so called Lion Update Combo 10.7.2 (even though I already had 10.7.2 installed).

Well, it still does not work. But one thing I've noticed in the meantime is that the Enable Location Services checkbox is keeps getting unchecked. To clarify, preferences allows me to set it, but then as soon as I leave Security & Privacy and immediately return, the option is unset again.

Any ideas?

Got a MBP late 2008 connected thru Airport, ran 10.7.2 combo update on a 10.7.1. FileVault 2 is on.

I am able to turn on Find My Mac and Back to My Mac in System Preferences, But I could not see the device when I run Find My iPhone on my iPhone running iOS 5.

1.I ran Disk Repair from Recovery HD, did not find any errors.

2. Tried to install the RecoveryHDUpdate.dmg, got an error msg saying:

"Lion Recovery Update can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirement for this update"

Does anybody know why I could not run the recovery udpate?

All the steps as outlined by SP Forsythe work. You just need to follow them.

1. Open Disk utility - it is in the Utilities folder under Applications.

2. Do a VERIFY DISK on the MACINTOSH HD

3. If you have errors it may ask you to restart your MAC in recovery mode and run Disk Utility from there and then repair disk.

4. Once you are done repairing your disk you must go and download the RECOVERY SYSTEM UPDATE @ http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1464 the download button is on the right side of your screen.

5. Download the file and run the update.

6. Once your are done you can then enable FIND MY MAC.

That's it and then you are done!

I didn't submit the ticket to Apple but I found the problem and the solution(s). This problem has to do with running different versions of Mac OS X and the Recovery System ("Mac OS X Utilities" - Cmd+R keys at boot). If you don't already have a recovery partition then reinstalling OS X will likely fix the issue for you but if you already have one then it is likely you need to update the recovery partition. Since the recovery partition system update installer that Apple has provided does not work for many, to update the partition you must either reinstall Mac OS X or delete and recreate it. You can simply check to see what version of the recovery system you are running by booting into it using the Cmd+R keys at boot. Once you are booted into the recovery system partition from the menu select Utilities and then Terminal. From the terminal run "

sw_vers" to determine your version. If it is version 10.7 then you need to update to 10.7.2 to get the find my mac feature working. This is probably because you updated your OS X version to Lion through the Apple Store but using that method to update does not update the Recovery System Partition. If you cannot bring up the Recovery System by holding down the command and R keys while booting then you probably don’t have the necessary partition. In either case you can either read this forum post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3578860?start=0&tstart=0 for help with reinstalling Mac OS X, which will not delete your files, or you can do what I did and follow these instructions... http://derflounder.wordpress.com/2011/10/22/removing-and-rebuilding-a-malfunctioning-recover-hd-partition/#comment-1006. Please note, that the method used in the last link is a bit complex and you should backup all your files before attempting to use that method. Actually, you should backup your files regardless of what method you use to attempt a Recovery System update.
