iTunes WiFi Sync not working

Since I couldn't get iCloud to work, I tried to use iTunes Wi-Fi Sync. However, it isn't working either. In the phone's settings, the Sync Now button is not available even though the phone is plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi. I made sure that the phone had been added to the network as a trusted device, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

I found the solution last night. It seems that it's not suffiicient to check the box in iTunes on your device's home screen saying you want to sync using Wi-Fi. You have to check the box AND THEN SYNC NOT USING WI-FI; then and only then will Wi-Fi Sync work.

Not exactly intuitive...

Hope this reply is going in the right place!

I had the same problem as most are posting here - intermittent (if at all) wi-fi sync access after trying almost every fix or workaround suggested (uninstall/reinstall, upnp, add ports, etc.) short of the "nuclear" one discussed which involved playing around in the Windows Registry. (I'm currently running Windows 7 w/ Iphone 4GS and Ipad 3). In the end, it boiled down to a firewall issue for me.

For those who are using F-Secure Internet Security 2011, upgrading to 2012 solved it immediately and wi-fi sync has worked consistently and perfectly since then with no issues at all. I've seen some other people suggesting playing around with Firewall/AV settings and based on how well my devices and iTunes sync up now, I'm thinking that may be the best and easiest solve.

I had a friend who was having a problem with wi-fi sync and her Windows desktop. When I looked in Event Viewer, I noticed a DNSServiceResolve error. After finding this thread on TechNet, I determined that the sync wasn't working because Bonjour was trying to resolve the device address using IPv6. I turned off IPv6 on the NIC, and the sync started working again.

OK OK OK

I tried all of the above ideas

none worked for me!

I had already re booted, but I rebooted again, the phone, router, comp (iMac)

I changed the name of my phone, I had a lot of hope riding on that idea, it sounded good, but (sigh) no go!

finally I got it working

this is what I did, I hope it works for you (at least on a Mac)

open

system preferences - Sharing

I clicked on internet sharing, but did not 'tick' the box (mine was off & is still is off now)

I 'ticked' the Wi-Fi tick box

and got out of preferences (i did not 'tick' the internet sharing box, dunno if that is importiant, just what i did)

my iphone 5 popped up in iTunes over Wi-Fi in like 5 seconds and has stayed there since i did a wifi sync

happy days

I may have something to add on the stability of WiFi iOS device connections to iTunes 11.1 on Windows 7 64bit machines and iPv6 which I have also posted under the thread about ATH.exe issues and Windows 7 64bit machines.

A couple of days ago, I noticed iPv6 timeout errors for the Bonjour Service in the Windows Event Viewer after observing erratic connections of my iOS7 devices to iTunes 11.1 as I have described previously. In fact as *a lot* of users have described in Apple on this thread & other forums for most of the past serveral years.

I had switched-off IpV6 on my Windows PC ethernet adaptor some months ago while attempting to troubleshoot the issue as a number of articles online attributed these type of errors to the Bonjour service 'choking' on iPv6, suggesting it was best to disable iPv6 at the Windows adaptor. In my case my Windows PC is connected by ethernet to the same router which serves WiFi to my iOS devices.

However this time I tried enabling iPv6 on the Windows PC adapter and voila! stable 'Sync Now' connections for the past few days for *both* my IPhone5 (iOS7) and iPad2 (iOS7) to the same instance of iTunes 11.1 / same Windows 7 64bit PC.

What's more when I again switched-off iPv6 on the adaptor (ie. in order to test reproduceability of this observation) I saw an immediate return to the previous unstable behaviour with iTunes momentarility showing both iOS device connections, then dropping one connection when the second device was synced.

This suggests to me that the (presumably) updated Bonjour Service now being rolled out with iTunes 11.1 requires iPv6 connectivity to reliably support 2 or more iOS devices connected by WiFi to the same Windows machine.

iTunes appears to try using iPv4 connections when iPv6 is disabled, but it seems iPv6 connectivity is required to maintain stable connections to multiple devices. This also seems to fits with some of the online technical documents I have read about Bonjour which suggests that iPv6 is used to maintain mulitple connections over a single interface.

Incidentally I don't dispute that turning-off iPv6 may have helped resolve connectivity issues for some users with previous versions of iTunes, particularly if they were only attempting to connect one device, however I suspect iPv4 and iPv6 behavior has been rewritten in the lastest version of iTunes & now requires iPv6 to be active on the Windows adaptor if 2 or more devices are connected.

I would be interested to hear if other users experiencing unstable 'Sync Now' connections between their Windows PC and their iOS devices can verify my experience.
