Apple ID cannot be used to sign in to iCloud

Wow! iCloud is a mess. Had to go through so many hoops because I had an old Apple ID (one that wasn't an email address). But was finally able to sort it out and convert my old ID to a new one (@gmail.com added).

I was able to sign into www.icloud.com no problem. But, now I can't sign into iCloud on my device - I get the following error message. "Unsupported Apple ID: This Apple ID cannot be used to sign in to iCloud. Create a new Apple ID or sign in with a different one."

How does that make any sense, if I'm able to sign in with that account on icloud.com no problem?

I'm having the same issue and receiving the sane error message -- I cannot log in to iCloud on my Mac, iPad or PC but navigating to the website www.icloud.com allows me to sign in.

My current Apple ID was converted to an e-mail based ID years ago and is a @hotmail.com account. I really do not want to create a new Apple ID just for iCloud with no way to merge the accounts.

Has anybody got a response from apple yet as this is a real problem.

I had an apple I'd which i use for everything. Purchases support, iTunes apps etc.

It wasn't an email so I login and change it as requested. Saved as email and now I can login to www.cloud.com

Great - still not working through any device.

Just upgraded to iOS 5 got mu contacts emails and camera roll. Are all apps set on cloud. ? If I go to sync apps it says it's going to erase my phone. Little confused with this setup as thought cloud was the way forward to sync all my stuff but I can't even login.

I shouldn't have to create a new account as I already have one with all my details, history, applecares and iTunes and apps.

Please get this sorted and let's call apple and find an answer.

Getting a new iPhone tomorrow but would like it all setup and synched before I go for a new device.

Hey guys, I'm having the exact same issue, although I never had to change my Apple ID over to an email address as some of you did, because when I created my Apple ID I made it as an email, specifically an '@gmail.com' address.

I can log onto www.iCloud.com no problem, but when it comes to logging in the iPhone 4, it doesn't work. I get the same error message that you've all been listing. This blows.

I have a .mac email address for my Apple ID and I just successfully migrated that to iCloud but now when I try and turn on Mail and Notes sync on my iPhone it says "Create a free @me.com account to turn on". So I tap Create and then when I enter that account (me.com email address) on the New iCloud Email screen, it says "Email Taken". That's right, it is, because that's me. Hello!

@Badger: No reply from Apple yet. I tried calling but they wanted me to pay for service because my iPhone 3GS is out of warranty..LOL... I guess a free service like iCloud doesn't include any warranty.

I'm going to miss mobile me... somtime you need to pay for a product in order to make the creator accountable for it.

Hoping if enough of us come forward on this thread they will give us some sort of solution.

Ive never had mobile me or mac.com. Just an apple id

All I want is to setup my iPhone with os5. Where are all my apps and music. I just want to sign in get it all in the cloud then pay for the subscription for music.

Can I just set iTunes to sync to phone so I don't lose all the stuff I've downloaded ?

Already sick of tis icloud account stuff. Was on phone TP apple they were helping and connection dropped after 35 mins of waiting.

Tell them its nt to do with the iphone hence not a warranty issue. Its a service issue for your IOS software and device.

The phone works. I gave them my serial number out of warranty and Apple UK were happy to help. I just got cut off - Iphones don't like holding calls for more than 30 - 40 mins !!!

If you have applecare on your mac or ipad or any other device that connects hat should get you through also

Will call again in the morning as need to get an answer as to the issue. Not waiting around forever but not going to setup a new account either.

I was having a username and password invalid message when trying to sign in to iCloud on my iPhone 4. I went into 'Mail, Contact, Calenders' and at the top you can see your accounts. My iCloud account said 'inactive' below it so I went in and entered my usual username and password again. It verified so I went back into the settings menu and tried iCloud one more time. It finally accepted and all is working now.

Hope that helps someone else.
