Apple ID cannot be used to sign in to iCloud

Wow! iCloud is a mess. Had to go through so many hoops because I had an old Apple ID (one that wasn't an email address). But was finally able to sort it out and convert my old ID to a new one (@gmail.com added).

I was able to sign into www.icloud.com no problem. But, now I can't sign into iCloud on my device - I get the following error message. "Unsupported Apple ID: This Apple ID cannot be used to sign in to iCloud. Create a new Apple ID or sign in with a different one."

How does that make any sense, if I'm able to sign in with that account on icloud.com no problem?

I'm having the same issue and receiving the sane error message -- I cannot log in to iCloud on my Mac, iPad or PC but navigating to the website www.icloud.com allows me to sign in.

My current Apple ID was converted to an e-mail based ID years ago and is a @hotmail.com account. I really do not want to create a new Apple ID just for iCloud with no way to merge the accounts.

Hey BigBlackSword,

If you get a brand new Apple ID that is not linked to anything from before, you should be able to log into iCloud with no problem. It can be any e-mail address based AppleID. But if you had an OLD Apple ID, one that was originally NOT in the form of an e-mail address (mine was based on my first and last name since it was created a looooong time ago) and then you update or change that Apple ID to something like icloudsucks@dropbox.com, you will STILL not be able to log into iCloud. If you have a new iCloud me.com e-mail address it works fine.

The problem is that the updated AppleIDs are actually an alias back to the original Apple ID, and iCloud can't support a non e-mail formed Apple ID. So there you have it. This is why certain AppleIDs fail, but the vast majority work just fine.

Hope that helps. You literally cannot use an AppleID that was originally based on a non-amil account name with iCloud. You'll have to do what the rest of us have done and make a second Apple ID just for iCloud. It is a bit of a pain, but once you get used to having one AppleID for iTunes and one for iCloud, it's fine. Just make sure you update any iOS devices you have with the correct iTunes Apple ID so your music still plays 🙂

Good Luck!

I just got off the phone with Apple's support (got transferred several times, but they finally transferred me to an "expert" in the security department.

I'm moving to the east coast, and my current ISP is only local to the California Bay Area, so I need to use a new email address for my AppleID. I thought the obvious choice would be my icloud.com email address.

The Apple support "expert" was confused, but eventually said I'd need to create a non-apple email to use as my email address for my existing AppleID if I didn't want two separate ID's.

My response was "So Apple is recommending that I do NOT use iCloud and I should create an non-Apple email account?" He said "Unfortunately, yes."

Come on Apple - you look riduculous. You're abandoning loyal long time customers by saying either create and manage two AppleID's or don't use "iCloud" so you can have a single AppleID.

It's time for Apple to step up and fix this ridculous mess.

Hey MacGuy86,

If you get a new email address like iamacoolguy@gmail.com and then change your current AppleID from the California email to the new gmail email, you will still be able to log in. All this really does is add the new email alias to your exisitng account.

But your original me.com email is tied back to a non-email AppleID, just like mine is. Probably something like "iamacoolguy". And non-email addresses won't work with the cloud based services that iCloud is using. So I have 2 Apple IDs, which I know is stupid, but there you are. You should be OK if you use a gmail or other well known email address and change your current log in to that.

Actually I have 4 Apple IDs now, one original for iTunes and other stuff, 1 for iCloud, 1 for App Dev, and 1 for the iBook store. They ALL have to be different. It's just insane.

Good Luck!

I totally agree to Laura. At times creating itunes account (for internationals) the Apple ID wasn't required or even available. All the purchase was done throughout itunes account.

Yesterday I wasn't able to update some applications as the ipad kept asking for Apple ID, PW etc which practically never existed. So I had to create an Apple ID. I thought if I'd created the Apple ID with the the exact same mail address as itunes, it would work. Disaster... I can by new application throughout the Apple ID. However my previous purchased applications cannot be updated, ipad assumes that it was purchased by a different account. If somehow I have to restructure the ipad, apperantly all the applications will be lost.

Over the years I have been struggling not to change to Android, as I had a huge investment into apple platform applications. For that reason I kept buying the whole iphone series upto iphone 5 and the whole ipad series upto ipad3... Somehow I felt like a kind of return of investment of the applications. Sadly I follow all the forums on this subject... Apperantly it was a problem for months... I believe it will be a big goodby to Apple world...

I had an iCloud account (username@icloud.com) AND an Apple account (username@msn.com) and could NOT set up my iCloud account on my IPhone. The solution was stupid but easy. 1. Before you begin, "Delete" all iCloud Accounts you have on all your items. 2. In your iPhone, open "iTunes" and scroll to the bottom and hit your "Apple ID" and Sign Out. Then sign in again with your Apple username@msn.com for instance (forget any icloud or other accounts) and put in you present Apple ID password and follow through then hit Done, even though it says that you already have this account or similar language. 3. Go to iPhone, Settings, iCloud (where you have previously deleted all account data) and now enter that same username@msn.com or whatever and your same Apple ID and it will finally open an account and ask to merge information. After you get it set up on your iPhone you can set it up on your other devices. Just forget about using username@icloud.com (or any other place) because it is not connecting to your Apple ID information. So now, all your Apple, iCloud, etc. apple items will use the same username @ the same account and the same password. It kind of brings you up-to-date with the current issues and gets you away from using all the old logins.
