Apple ID cannot be used to sign in to iCloud

Wow! iCloud is a mess. Had to go through so many hoops because I had an old Apple ID (one that wasn't an email address). But was finally able to sort it out and convert my old ID to a new one (@gmail.com added).

I was able to sign into www.icloud.com no problem. But, now I can't sign into iCloud on my device - I get the following error message. "Unsupported Apple ID: This Apple ID cannot be used to sign in to iCloud. Create a new Apple ID or sign in with a different one."

How does that make any sense, if I'm able to sign in with that account on icloud.com no problem?

I'm having the same issue and receiving the sane error message -- I cannot log in to iCloud on my Mac, iPad or PC but navigating to the website www.icloud.com allows me to sign in.

My current Apple ID was converted to an e-mail based ID years ago and is a @hotmail.com account. I really do not want to create a new Apple ID just for iCloud with no way to merge the accounts.

I got an update today from the Apple tech team and essentially they don't know what the problem is and when there will be a fix for the issue.

It's my email address (which is O2 in the uk) but I think it's older accounts that's the issue

Basically you just have to create a new Apple ID to use with iCloud then keep your old Apple ID for iTunes purchases et cetera

He thinks there will be a fix but there is no info at all on the issue or if it will be fixed or not

I received the same error while trying to activate 'find my iphone' app. I called Apple and the tech asked me to reset network settings on the Iphone 4S, as part of troubleshooting. That didn't solve the problem. What solved the problem, atleast for me, was I changed password of my old itunes account by logging to appleid.id.com and used that ID and password ( an hotmail account) to login to icloud. I was able to login successfully and set up icloud on the phone and activate find my iphone app.

Since having icloud All my apple id's are a mess. I had to start creating new ones since it did not even accept the old ones. did not accept my date of birth! (am i demented of what?) and i dod not even get e-mails in order to set up new password. and if it finally works this new password does not work. I got totally stuck with updating apps and cannot move anywhere with it since icloud. not to mention that i had lost all my contacts while updating! WHAT A MESS!!! I can log into everything in iCloud EXCEPT mail. My apple id is a me.com address. On iCloud.com, I get an error message saying "Cannot load mail". On my iOS devices (all running iOS 5) when I open mail, it says the user name or password is incorrect. I've tried resetting everything, have 2 open cases with different apple support divisions... nothing. Any suggestions?

Add me to the list! 😟

I'm also getting the "Apple ID Unsupported" error on my Apple ID, which ***** since I use the one account for everything including my purchases and my iOS Developer subscription.

When I try to log into iCloud.com, it says I need to move my MobileMe account across to iCloud. Trouble is, I've never had MobileMe and my ID doesn't work on that website either.

This is EXACTLY the solution I came up with..complicated by managing my wife's iPad, my ipdad2' two macs, and two new iPhones, not to mention my kids' iPods:

Use my old mac.com address for all iTunes and iStores

Establish and use a new me.com (I was lucky, I could use the same name as my Mac.com one yet) for all iCloud items on my iPad, iPhone, my Mac

Establish and use a new me.com for my wife's iPad, iPhone, and Mac for iCloud, while using old Mac.com address for the stores On her machines yet, too

So far, things are syncing, and I am no longer spending valuable hours reading blogs and trying to figure fixes out.

It is already apparent this will require discipline about which appleID each of us uses for each setting/store/iCloud function. And I still don't know if I will successfully get everyone access to our family music collection on all devices, but I have found that you can still resort to a plug-in sync in iTunes...as well as a wifi one... that allows my wife to pick her music to download to her iPhone from our family collection using the Mac.com appleID. So' so far, it doesn't seem like I have giving up anything with the multiple id's.

Nothing helps. I've had a new iMac for a week and new iPhone 4S for a few days longer and the whole Apple ID and iCloud thing still won't work. No one at the 1-800 number can help either. I'm upset that I can't use these features or buy new stuff for either of these products because of some technological issue no one understands. I had two Apple id's when this began: a very old one (my e-mail address) and the one I've used for the last 5 years that is the part of my e-mail address before "yahoo.com". The new computer and phone will not let the non-yahoo.com ID be my Apple ID, and I can't make the non-yahoo id into an Apple ID because one already exists. Additionally, the two id's can't be synced. One of the many 1-800 Apple rep's I've spoken with over the last week ahd me create a brand new gmail-based Apple Id. I really don't want three accounts to maintain. The last 1-800 rep told me to go back to using the yahoo.com account, but every time I try, I get error messages which will not allow me to log in. THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING. Somehow, despite all of this, my iPhone and iMac are actually syncing in some sort of wireless situation, but neither the iMac nor any Apple technological system/expert can tell me how or with which ID. None of my contacts have transferred from phone to computer via iCloud and I can't use FaceTime on the computer b/c I guess that's governed by the iCloud as well. Ahhh! Isn't there anyone who can help???? Apple, now is the time to save the day.

I took my iPhone 4S and new iMac back to my Apple store and met with a Genius. In about 45 minutes he fixed the problem by doing some stuff with the keychain.

My Genius explained that before there was iTunes, Apple id's were not truly id's. When iTunes came along, the id took on a different role, and this is likely why I had 2 id's (one pre-iTunes, one post). The pre-iTunes id, not being an email address can't be used with the iCloud. He recommended keeping the pre-iTunes (non-email) id as my purchase/iTunes id and making my post-iTunes id my iCloud id. Before visiting the Genius Bar, I called Apple online support many times because I could not get any of my id's work. My Genius, who was awesome, decided it was a keychain problem, fixed it, and everything has been working with no problems. I wish I'd gone back to the Apple Store for in-person help sooner!
