I'm having the exact same issue. In my Message preferences it says "Verifying" next to my phone number for about a day, and then it changes to "Error". I've tried doing a full restore on the phone, and I've reset network settings as the instructions above say.

I've spoken to Apple and Verizon on the phone. First, apple told me to call Verizon and have them re-provision MMS and SMS on my account. They tried doing that to no avail. They then put Apple on the line who offered to exchange my phone for another.

It seems strange that there would be something so particularly wrong with my phone that it would cause this minute problem when everything else on the phone works fine and so many others are having the same problem.

Any thoughts?

It worked for me with jayeecordero on top. Thanks! Tried many suggestion, finally this one worked. I switch from Indosat to Telkomsel provider of Indonesia. And I also noticed that my problem of 3G sign (though I am sure I'm in the coverage) didn't kick in after leaving wifi hotspot is now gone. Previously with Indosat network, I must manually switch off and on the 3G toggle in Setting >General>Network every time. Otherwise 3G won't kick in. Now that problem doesn't happen with Telkomsel network. I'm on iPhone 4S IOS 5.1.1.

Hi, I just thought I would add to this. I had the same problem- first iMessage, FaceTime & Push Notifications would not work at all. Then I installed SAM (though jailbreaking & installing cydia) & followed the above steps on this site http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/fix-imessage-facetime-push-notifications-on- hacktivated-iphone-4-3gs/
After, it was successful, although in iMessage & FaceTime settings, my phone number was stuck on 'verifying'. Tried switching both iMessage & FaceTime on & off several times, and reset network settings, but would not fix my problem. So then I decided it might have been something to do with a setting within the SAM application. The thing that fixed my problem altogether, was by simply selecting 'auto-detect' in the 'method' part of SAM. So I would strongly suggest selecting auto-detect not manual or any of the others under the method setting if your phone is still not working.

Hope this helps a few people! 🙂

I'll just throw this suggestion out there, Apple says your iPhone needs to be connected to a cellular network, this fixed the problem for me because at the time my phone had run out of credit.

I feel like Apple are really tripping up lately, with terrible iPhone 5, iOS6, Maps and now this over complex iMessage.

There's no way this is going to be a success if it's this complex to set up.

Steve Jobs promised us, "It just works"........
