No gestures for iPad 1 in iOS 5? Apple, are you kidding us?!

This is not fair.

I would know if my iPad was jailbroken! I didn't even have a Mac till mid April - that was when I registered as a developer and downloaded XCode. Prior to that the only computer my iPad knew was my PC running on an ATHLON 64 with Windows Vista. You'll just have to take my word at face value when I say that my iPad was not jailbroken. I can only recount my own experience and that was my experience. The multitasking gestures were one of the features that I would show to my friends and now I can't !

i was actually planning to buy an Ipad 2 until i saw what they did with the IOS 5 update. I have been using gestures and love it now they are taking that away and only giving it to Ipad2 users? what will the Ipad 3 have that wont work on the ipad2? I did the update to my wife's ipad and when i saw that it didn't have gestures i didn't do it to mine, now i have a lot of apps that will not update because i do not have the ios5 update.... catch 22. I have been a loyal apple customer with 2 ipod touch, 2 ipod nanos (current gen), core i7 macbook pro, core i5 iMac, Apple Airport Extreme and Apple TV (current gen). There are really cool features that you can do with Apple tv too but ONLY WITH THE IPAD 2 AND THE IOS5 UPDATE. Not cool Apple! You are losing a valuable customer here (check my account and see my purchases). If this keeps up you will see more incompatibility issues with apps and apple devices. Siri works on iPhone 4s but not Iphone 4, infinity blade 2 will work with ipad 2 and iphone 4s but not Iphone 4 or ipad one or this gerenation ipod etc. Most apple tv features will work with ipad 2 and iphone 4s but not iphone 4 or ipad...... this is getting ridiculous!!!!!

I WANT MY GESTURES!!!!

Dahveed I really love your occupation title :) "Industrial psychologist" ... although in this context it is rather troubling to think that you have volunteered in a community forum to engage with users who's fingers are now no longer performing the way we have been accustomed.

Perhaps you're motivated to provide a buffer -- to re-train us to accept Apple's sound engineering justification?

I'm going to call you an Apple spin-doctor if you don't mind.

I am an iOS, Android and Windows Mobile developer and team mentor and have been enjoying the multitasking gestures for some time.

One of the key things that grates with me here about this set of features is the double-click home button action to reveal the multitasking bar.

I am quite happy to make the assumption that the 4 fingers up gesture will function perfectly on iOS 5 to reveal the multitasking bar. Granted, perhaps the other gestures that let's assume crash the OS when they're attempted probably can't be easily disabled until further configuration settings are added.

What do you think Spin Doctor?

Good morning Apple Inc.,

We bought your product because you stand out from the competition. Although the competitors have hdmi, usb, flash, etc...; the list goes on.

We stood by a product we trust and love, Apple that is!

Now why would you remove a feature that is so genius, fun, fast, and helps people multitask at the tip of their fingertips (literally)!

For the sake of ALWAYS aiming to please your customers and consumers with your products and having them at awe with what you make.

Create an ios 5.1 update with the multi-touch gestures on Ipad 1

Sincerely,

Faithful customer & Apple product consumer

I agree with sfilimonov.

sfilimonov, I feel that you are making valid and intelligent comments. I hope you wrote Apple.

It seems as though the Cat Lady just wants to argue for arguments sake and the Mexican Flag Man enjoys arguing semantics and correcting technicalities with self-aggrandizement. Interesting hobbies.

The issues brought up on this thread are definitely "fair" to argue and not get some half baked logical fallacy thrown in your face.... "Life is not fair. Anyone who suggested otherwise to you was lying. Or in very deep denial." Said the Cat Lady. Sad, sad Cat Lady, the concerns are not whether or not life is fair. Hopefully in the future she may try to read a little deeper into peoples valid frustrations before she trolls. Apple has a great team of people but they are not infallible (hah, I put that extra "l" there on purpose). We keep them in check because we care. If we didn't care then we would not be voicing our concerns on this Apple Support Community.

I would have a better experience with my iPad if it had Multitasking Gestures as promised by Apple. Maybe Apple made a mistake by promising this or maybe this functionality will be coming in a future update. Either way, I hope they address the issue publicly...to show that they care.

That is a cat in her photo, right? It doesn't look like a troll, though it sure sounds like one. Maybe it is a troll with a cat costume! Hmmmm……that tricky, tricky troll.

As you may know, there were two ways to activate the multi-touch gestures for iPads 1 & 2 running on iOS 4.3.x. If you had a Mac you could buy Xcode for Snow Leopard for US$5, or get if for free for Lion and then convert your iPad for developer use. Doing so activated the gestures.

If you had a PC you had to hack a file in the iOS that activated the gestures. (You can Google this and see exactly what was involved.) Both methods however left you with a nonjailbroken iPad, fully recongnized as such by iTunes and fully serviceable under warranty if you had to visit an Apple Authorized Support Provider. And if you ever needed to restore your iPad to factory conditions, you would find that the gestures were no longer activated, so you would have to repeat the process to activate them again.

Multitouch was mentioned in Apple's advertisements in until just recently. There is no reason to exclude original iPad owners except for marketing purposes. When using them in iOS 4, they worked well. The argument cannot be made that this feature degrades the user experience as the opposite is true. Lastly, original iPad's home buttons are getting old. Gestures save the home button, thus extending the life of the iPad. Again, it comes back to marketing.

While I understand the need to sell their products, to change something arbitrarily just to ensure people will buy the new product sooner is foolish. I was planning on buying a new iPad as soon as my AppleCare expires anyway. Degrading my user experience to make me buy sooner is not the way to treat customers.

This has become a bit of an argument between the smug ipad2 owners and the disappointed early adopters who have seen Apple take away the *best* feature of the ipad - which was free with Lion. A very poor decision by Apple and a cheap attamept to "differentiate" between iPad and iPad2. Clearly the abysmal camera, new stupid shape and smartcovers are not enough.

Just wait until iPad3 has a better feature that is inexplicably unavailable to iPad2 users....
