ios5 upgrade 'could not activate iphone'

Hey guys,

I'm stuck at activating the phone while upgrading to IOS5.

Upgrade seems finished and it happened at the initialization procedure.

It gives 'Your iphone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily the activation server is temporarily unavailable'

I'm in Canada using Rogers as carrier.

I called Rogers support and was told 'activation server' is indeed Apple's activation server and is required to go to the next step which is to connect to Rogers cellular network.

Support person says I need to keep try to beat the crowd until it's done.

Does anyone's having this issue ?

Thanks,

Y

I see this is the first time you have posted to this thread, and there's only one other post from you in the forum. Neither describes the problem you are having and how you have tried to resolve it; are you here to get help, or just to whine?

If you actually want help in this help forum describe your symptoms, what you have tried to fix it, and what the results were.

BTW, the most common cause of being unable to activate an iDevice is because it was hacked, unlocked or jailbroken, or the computer you are using was used to hack, unlock or jailbreak ANY iDevice (not just the one with the immediate problem).

Hi, everyone. I was having trouble with this issue at first, too. If you have a VerizonWireless iPhone, I can help by giving all of you step by step directions to activate your iPhone if it is a Verizon iPhone. After you try to activate your iPhone, you will get the iPhone not activated popup message. Go to the homescreen. Tap "Phone". Dial *228. Tap call. If the call button does not do anything when you tap it, reboot the iPhone, and wait for the iPhone not activated screen. Then, repeat the steps starting at "Start at the homescreen". Once you hear the automated message, try to activate it by phone. If you need more help, just reply! Thanks, Austin.

I am completely new to the iphone posting replies and using forums but not so new to the world of apple. Please excuse me for this rather long thread if it is in the wrong place, use of incorrect protocol, irrelevant info etc but I am looking for some help. I purchased a new sim free "unlocked" 3GS from ebay in early December sold with a warranty. It was working perfectly with my vodafone sim however I was prompted to update in itunes (I think it was working on 4.3.1) and since doing this my phone will not activate and in itunes it says there is no sim in the phone. I did not do any backup before the update and I cannot access any information about the phone from the handset or in itunes. I took it to the genius bar and they did a full restore but this did not make any difference, they told me the carrier was o2, to get it unlocked and if the problem persisted to bring it back. I then went to o2 who told me to buy a pay & go sim top up £15 and fill in an online unlock form which I duly did. The problem is that for o2 to unlock the phone I need to make a uk call from the phone with the sim which I cannot do because I cannot activate the phone. I went back to the genius bar but was advised that the warranty is invalid as the phone was previously unlocked. I did not give any history of the phone. I offered to pay for a service/repair but they refused and suggested I google my problem for a solution. The phone is useless at the moment and I have been searching on forums for the last few weeks. I do not feel confident about DIY because I do not have a full history of the phone and I do not know what OS, firmware, baseband etc its now on. Do you have any advice for me?

Thanks

dbirrell I just posted 2 very lengthy relies to help you out but for some reason they didn't show up. I don't think apple like it when you start talking about jailbreaking. Is this an apple controlled website?

Sorry but I didn't make a copy so just follow the link from my previous post for a solution. Perhaps it got emailed to you before it was deleted.

I'll help out as much as possible as I had exactly the same problem. Getting it fixed is easier than you think once you know how. two weeks ago i new nothing about iphones. Cheers
