ios5 upgrade 'could not activate iphone'

Hey guys,

I'm stuck at activating the phone while upgrading to IOS5.

Upgrade seems finished and it happened at the initialization procedure.

It gives 'Your iphone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily the activation server is temporarily unavailable'

I'm in Canada using Rogers as carrier.

I called Rogers support and was told 'activation server' is indeed Apple's activation server and is required to go to the next step which is to connect to Rogers cellular network.

Support person says I need to keep try to beat the crowd until it's done.

Does anyone's having this issue ?

Thanks,

Y

Called my carrier again.

They said it's Apple server that's broken.. hardly believable but just to make sure. Is this true ?

I really don't see much activity when the phone says, "it may take up to three minutes to activate your phone".

I mean, the device is on wifi (funcitoning) but there's no 'spinning wheel' next to wife icon at the top of the screen which normally shows when there's data transfer.

I haven't been able to solve the issue. Itune now says my sim card is missing. hah. yeah whatever.

It's all along problem with the device, not the carrier for sure.

I'll have to admit it's time to ditch apple product, (it's not genuine anymore and never will be without S..) moving to Android. Google's got some cool stuff, not so much convoluted as this and will encourage people to do the same.

Just trying to 'unbrick' this iphone for the one last time to complete my contract with my carrier.

Here's the exact error message.

There is no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate.

Please disconnect and insert a SIM card in the iPhone.

I have a good ol' blackberry and tested the SIM card there and works just fine.

And I really didn't do much other than pressing update button on the itune to upgrade to IOS5..

I don't think so Dan R16 and don't expect to get fanboy points with that from me.

I have ipad2 and have no problem upgrading.

Anyway, some 2 hours of backflipping (I work in telecom industry and it's very important to get SMS from my routers/servers across the country.) , I finally had os fired-up but still there's no data network, just wifi.

My iphone 3gs became ipod that is costing me money.

Where I work, if we do this to our customers, we call it 'abuse'.

Commenting on IOS5, it's alright except it didn't restore songs and apps, only the pictures. (insult over injury)

I'll have to carry both my blackberry (with SIM) and iphone until Apple put their act together and sort this out.

I guess it's true that one's crisis is another's opportunity and it's interesting to see how the mobile market would change in the coming years.

I've enjoyed Apple at it's best (macbook, G4 ti, ibook, imac, iphone3gs, iphone4, ipod, ipad2) and it's time to move on.. Samsung Galaxy tab is at the top of my list for now..

I am having the exact same problem! I am so bummed. The upgrade went through, but it shows no service and cannot activate the iphone. I went to the apple store today. They told me a lot of people are having the exact same problem. I called my carrier yesterday and also tried my SIM on another phone and it works just fine. So the problem is definitely with Apple. They told me that the activation server is down and wait another day :S I dont know how long we will all have to wait before we can have usable phones again. This is just BS!
