iOS 5 Wireless Sync
Does wireless sync launch iTunes or do you have to launch iTunes prior to initiating a wireless sync? Thanks.

I don't think so. My post was directed at the post immediately above mine, which was directed at me. Mind you, I am living off pensions now, so it's quite possible I have slipped into an alternate state of consciousness. And I haven't had my first caffeine of the day yet....
Great!

No offence to you personally, mate. 🙂 I was just pointing out that your statement appeared incorrect, based on the manual to which you referred.
Let's end the discussion here. I know what's working for me because I followed the manual's instructions one by one and I, personally, have no trouble with wi-fi sync.
Best...

No problem with wifi syncing here either, having followed the same procedure. And certainly no offence taken. I'm just being my normal pedantic, curmudgeonly self. 😝
Dear "tonefox",
You say, "and the method of connection has no effect on how the equipment behaves, except data transfer speed." I am not sure that is true. For example, the App "Splashtop Remote Desktop Client" REQUIRES that the laptop, desktop, whatev...is connected to your network via ethernet for Wake on LAN to work with your iPad. It won't work if you are connected via wifi.
Having said that, I do believe your point is generally true. There are just special circumstances where it is not. Circumstances of which it would be quite important to be aware.

I have what I think is a related query about this.
I am using Windows 7 (32-bit, though I doubt that matters) and of course iTunes 10.5.0.142 along with the official iOS 5 release on both my iPhone 4 and iPad (1) and have enabled and have used (and can use) wireless syncing ok.
iTunes keeps starting itself up. I shut it down, and it restarts after a few minutes, connecting to one or the other of my iOS devices.
Anyone else have this issue? I understand that iTunes needs to be up for the wireless syncin to happen, no problems with that, but I don't always want to have iTunes running 24/7 on my PC.
hello all,
I had also problem with my iphone 4S sync with the itunes.
My PC working with Win7 64bit.
In the last days it worked fine after I noticed the solution:
every time that the bluetooth is enabled - no sync can do.
every time that the bluetooth is disabled - only open the itunes (if it configured to wireless sync) - it will immediatly sync.
try it and it will work
Dang! I got spanked, I mean "edited," by the host. I should keep a record of these posts so that I can learn what got me in trouble. I mean, reading "edited by host" is of little help in learning how to be a better poster...unless you have a photographic memory and can recall the original post perfectly.
With stock share now soaring over $500 perhaps Apple could invest in a richer discussion experience for its customers with more input from Apple experts themselves...instead of, more or less, letting customers solve their Apple problems on their own in these forums.
No bitterness here. I just have always felt that these forums would be more effective if at some point an expert from Apple jumped into the discussion and helped right the ship. We all don't live near an Apple Store and have access to Apple Geniuses.
Oh Boy...am I going to get Spanked big time for this comment.
My wireless sync button will only appear if my iTouch is plugged into the darn laptop it's syncing to (It won't light up if it's plugged into a power outlet in the wall). Why? What's the point in having it wirelessly sycing if it's still connected to the laptop?
Anyone else get this?
Why won't it work on anyother power source except the laptop???? 😠
I finally got my wireless sync working:
My setup:
1. PC (Win 7 64bit) connected via gigabit ethernet cable to the same router which has wifi ... essentially on the same network.
2. iPhone 4 and new iPad (Gen 3) both now syncs over WiFi.
3. iTunes must be already running ... initial setup must be done via USB cable to check "sync with iPad/iPhone over wifi" in the Devices summary>options of the selected device.
4. iPhone/IiPad must be configured for iTunes Wireless Sync. (once done ... you need to power down and power up your iPhone or iPad then the Sync Now button will not be Greyed out.) Your device need NOT be connected to any power source to Sync. Auto Sync only kicks in if you plug into power. You can manually force Sync by pressing the Sync Now button even if you are not connected to any power source. But you should at least be sure you have enough power to complete a sync if you are low on power.
The above describes my experience.
