iOS5 bricked my iPad 2 - any suggestions?

I tried to update my iPad 2 to iOS5 like many others today, and while the download went smoothly, the install is where my iPad crashed and burned. An error code- I think it was 3004- popped up, and then my iPad dissapeared from iTunes. I tried reconnecting, rebooting, reinstalling iTunes, but iTunes still won't recognise my iPad. Meanwhile, the screen just shows the Apple logo and an empty progress bar. Won't turn off or load. I guess this is Recovery Mode. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting iTunes to recognise iPads?

What abcdefg... described is exactly what happened to me a week ago. I've wasted hours doing the research and trying different things to unbrick my iPad 2. So far, a lot of wasted time and I am still the owner of the nicest paperweight in town. I've given up. I think the plan now is to mail my new paperwieght to Apple. They can either fix it. Send me a replacement (that works), or keep it. I think I'm done with Apple... Been a fan since I bought my first Mac Mini in 2005, but when any company's products become as popular as quickly as they have, I guess you can expect quality and concern for those who buy its products to take a hit.

Hi JLfromhonolulu, There is no getting away from the fact that Apple screwed the upgrade process up for the iPad. All one needs is patience. If you follow the suggestions that people have made in this post, it will be resolved - the link in Dah-veed's post is a good one. I also had the same experience, and all I did was read what others had found out, applied the fix, and I have an iPad2 working on IOS5. Cheers.

I am running Windows 7 x64 and have an iPad2 2. The install process got far enough to backup the settings of the iPad2 on my pc, then crashes and reports the error to Apple. I too tried Dahveed's suggestion several times
but neither my pc nor iTunes recognizes the iPad2 (though I periodically get the sound that indicates a new device has been connected to my pc). Right now I have a very fancy and expensive paperweight. One has to wonder how much testing was done with this code. Any other suggestions before I take this thing back to the Apple store ?

Beech,

I originally had issues last month (see previous post in this thread) but after trying about a dozen times over the next day it worked however my iPad did need to be restored.

However, in the past week I tried Connecting to iTunes to sync and my computer would not recognize it. As like you, it would make the noise that something had been plugged in, but would not be recognized my windows or iTunes. After deleting and reloading iTunes and all the other programs, still no resolve. Finally, I tried plugging the USB into the tower and not just the monitor and PRESTO..... It worked.

Don't know if this is your issue, but make sure you are plugging it directly into the tower USB and not one on the monitor.

Good luck

Success !! But it was slightly more complicated than what you suggested. When I connected the iPad to a new pc (with the latest iTunes installed), it did recognize that the iPad was in restore mode. I initiated the restore and update and it got about 80 percent complete then failed with a code 14. I then restarted the pc and iPad, switched to the other USB port, and then disabled the antivirus program. I then retried the restore and update and it ran to completion. When it asked to reinstall the settings, I closed iTunes and moved the iPad to my original pc. It then copied over all my settings and asked a few questions regarding location services and iCloud. I think the step that was left out is that your pc antivirus program must be disabled before you attempt to upgrade to IOS5.

Thanks !!!

Hi Beech,

Glad it's sorted, more time you'll never get back<G>

I never had problems with my USB or Virus protection, the only issue I found was that during download the Ipad would fall over and stop downloading. This could be down to Apple or the server or even your own ISP/Internet connection. Mine has been flaky at times. This solution is the only one that works if your PC won't see your Ipad in recovery mode I have found.

Cheers

Here's an update. After following a bunch of different suggestions, including the ones post here, and after spending over an hour on the phone with a "senior advisor" at Apple support, I wound up just taking my iPad 2 in to the closest Apple Store, in Frankfurt, Germany. They were able to get iOS 5 successfully loaded onto my device.

Now, I no longer have a bricked iPad 2... Hooray! I have one with a version of iOS 5 that continually shuts down and restarts itself on its own, every one to five minutes. It's still essentially useless to me.

Thanks everyone for your comments, support and suggestions. I'm sure I'll run into some of you in one of the other threads on post-iOS 5 update woes...

Thanks Apple.

Guys,

I had the same problem, after trying more then 5 kinds of solutions I found the one which worked for me: JUST CONNECT TO ANOTHER PC, and install itunes in it, of course.

I was updating my ipad 2 to iOS5, got stucked in that "usb itunes connect" screen and my Win7 could see that something was in the usb but the iTunes could not recognize it.

FAILED:

- DFU didn't work

- Re-install itunes didn't work

- Recboot didn't work

- Rebooting the PC didn't work

- Removing all usbs, ,tryed every possible way to turn it on: didn't work

- Connected into another pc with itunes... WORKED.

for some reason itunes couldn`t see my bricked ipad anymore. I have another ipad2 (which was ok) and itunes could see it normally.

iOS5 bricked my iPad 2 - any suggestions?
