iOS 5 update ate up my available space!

I just installed the iOS 5 update without a hitch, but after syncing everything, I discovered that I now have 13.6 GB of Other installed on my iPad 2, leaving only 3 GB available space left. I had well over 12 GB available before the update. What gives?

I have had this exact same issue. ios 5 other ate up 2.27gb on my iphone4 and 1.somthing gb on my son's ipod 4g. It seems conected to the amount of music you have on your device. My son has about half the music that I do. Plus I also had other music related issues. I am a stickler on my cover flow art and have noticed that some of my album art that previously appeard is now missing on both devices but still present in itunes.

I am not an iphone expert by any means but I think I got it figured out why. I choose iCloud to sync my stuff instead of with my computer. The amount I had set to sync to iCloud was about 6.6 GB and that was about the same size as my 'other' storage. When I turned off iCloud sync, it went away and ios5 only uses an extra bit for the new features. I also had not synced yet with iCloud, so I wonder if the 'other' was what was to be pushed to the cloud and then removed once I did that. I never synced with iCloud, just went back to sync with iTunes on computer. I can still do that over wifi, so its no big deal for me because I did not want every picture from my iphone sent to my ipad instantly.

After the upgrade to my 32GB 3GS, I wasn't able to sync any of my apps/music. I had over 25GB of "other" taking up all of my space. I followed the advice above and unchecked all of the sync options in iTunes. This emptied my iPhone and got the "Other" space down to about .5 GB. I'm now in the process of adding each option back one-at-a-time... apps first. So far, so good. I'll report back later with my final results.

Good luck,

Chris

Ok everyone, try this to fix the issue:

  • Stop the iOS device from syncing
  • Uncheck all items EXCEPT your apps (ringtones, music, movies, tv shows, podcasts, itunes U, books, & photos)
  • Sync the iOS device. At this point, once the sync is complete, the OTHER storage SHOULD mostly go away
  • Re-add your invidiual items (ringones, music, movies, etc...) ONE BY ONE, syncing after you add each one back.

Right now my iPhone is almost done re-adding everything back onto it that was there pre-iOS 5. I still have to re-sync my iPad (had to interrupt when phone sync problem started), but the OTHER storage is no longer an issue.

For those using iCloud, not sure if this will work for you as I haven't dared try to move my multiple alias MobileMe to iCloud yet, nor have I bought into Lion either.

Above all, don't panic. For many of us, we've been through this for what, 5 years now? We'll get through these little hiccups :-)

I had the same "other" space problem on my iPhone 4. I followed the advice to unsync all data except apps, and that seems to be working. But honestly, this is an iCloud issue. As soon as I turned off all the iCloud syncs, the other space practically disappeared.

I might be the only man in the world to say this, but I like MobileMe and I use the iDisk cloud a lot with zero complaints. I'm writing a book, so I type on my computer and then backup to multiple sources, including MobileMe. Then, I can at random take a look on my iPhone at the document, or at work maybe visit mobileme.com and take a look, share the file from there, etc. With iCloud, my understanding is that I have to use one of the Apple apps (cough* $$) to then share this way.

iOS 5 update ate up my available space!
