iOS 5 update ate up my available space!

I just installed the iOS 5 update without a hitch, but after syncing everything, I discovered that I now have 13.6 GB of Other installed on my iPad 2, leaving only 3 GB available space left. I had well over 12 GB available before the update. What gives?

I had to backup and restore my iPhone to fix the problem. I was showing 6.2GB of other and cannot tell if it occurred after I initially upgraded to IOS5 or when I attempted to use the Cloud. I found directions to backup and restore at the following support site:

After the restore, my contacts did not initially come through. I had to plug my phone into iTunes and under the Info tab check sync contacts with all contacts and then scroll down towards the bottom and under 'Advanced: replace information on this phone' click on Contacts and then click on Sync. Now I have .47GB under other and I am good to go!

I am having the same problem described in these five pages. My iPhone 4S has 8 GB of other on my 16 GB phone. I've tried clearing the safari cache, cookies, data etc. I restored the phone back to factory settings and restored from a backup. The only thing I sync in iTunes are the apps.

Nothing has worked! That **** Other category is still eating up half of my phone. Is there any solution? It has to be an Apple bug if it is affecting this many people with the exact same problem.

What I think it is, is that the "Other" category is unbacked-up data. If you have selected iCloud Backup, then you should back-up your phone (at least) once a week, or all the data will be saved on your phone instead of in the cloud. That's the only reason I can think of, especially when you mentioned iOS 5. iCloud was really the big thing that came with iOS 5. Hope this helped. 🙂
