iOS 5 update deleted text messages

So I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 5, turned it on after a long wait of restoring errors, and all my text messages are gone 😟 I never delete anything! HELP!

Whoa! Huge find foad! Thank you for that. I just tried it and you are absolutely right. I can search for, and find, my missing texts.

That gives me a very small sigh of relief because at least I know they are there, on the phone.

Now if only we could find a solution. Has anyone reported this to Apple yet?

We shoud ALL do that right now....

I have the same problem! It has the texts I sent today but it's missing all my text from August to now! It has all my texts before but I'm missing some messages which is a shame! I've also noticed that it has not got any of my apps I've bought recently either and I'm worried about this because I spent £4 on Fifa 12 app! I think that it only has the apps from when I'm guessing I last updated all my stuff to my computer (August)

I want my stuff back 😟

So you all have lost your text messages after the update, but have you been able to send and receive texts since the update? I still have my text messages after updating to IOS 5, but everytime I try to send a text, it says my SMS inbox is full and I won't receive messages until I delete some messages. I've deleted a bunch of threads, but still no luck receiving messages. I'm at the point where I might just delete all my texts, which of course I really don't want to do...

hi HammerBT,

Yeah, I believe it took me a couple tries before my phone starting working after the upgrade to iOS 5. I downloaded iOS 5 and upgraded my phone, and then the restore process happened. It didn't work the first time..it took a couple restore attempts and my phone was eventually frozen on the home screen. After restarting my phone using the lock and home buttons, my phone was brought to a usable state. The new "setup wizard" thing came up and I was able to configure my iPhone. It's weird because my phone crashed during the setup wizard process several times before it was finally working. I went to my Messages app to check out the new iMessage feature...and all my text messages were gone.

yeeup, mine are gone, too. and, unlike some of you, i am unable to see even traces of them in the spotlight search.

i've tried three different restores, and no luck.

everything else works perfectly - even new texts work fine. it's just i no longer have my 2.5 year archive of messages, which is very disappointing.

if it helps at all...

it did take me a few tries to complete the original upgrade last night, likely because everyone else was upgrading at the same time. i also, FWIW, had to change my apple ID from a nickname to an email address during the process. i thought nothing of it at the time, but knowing now that the new imessages use the apple ID, maybe that's part of the conflict.

Same here. Tried it 3 times already and wasted a whole day. Lost all text messages and my photos. thankfully it managed to restore my music ( It was backed up on an external drive anyway) and managed to copy my contacts thanks to mobileme. 4 Years of text messages and my call logs are all gone.

Worst apple experience i have ever had.

I updated both my phone and my wife's yesterday. Both our phones are 3GSs. My phone is working perfectly. Her phone is working perfectly with the exception of messages. It seems like her old text messages are there but when you go to view them the conversation screen is blank. This is also a problem for any new text messages she receives.

As an example if you start the messaging app you will see a list of contacts with a preview of the last message to or from each contact. When you click on that contact you go to the conversation screen but there is nothing there. When you go back into the main message list the conversation you just viewed, which was empty, disappears from the list. When she gets a new text the app badge updates indicating an unread text, but you can never read the message.

It seems to me the messages, old and new, are still there, but something is stopping them from being displayed in the messaging app. I hope they come up with a fix for this soon as this is a huge inconvenience.

I'm with you all. I updated late wedensday night, and didn't realize my texts were gone until thursday morning when I went to check one from earlier in the week. I too have tried restoring to the pre-iOS5 backup it made, in addition to other backups located on my Time Machine backup. No success. At this point I just want to go back down to 4.3.5, but am unable to.

Two questions I would like you all to answer:

1. Were you on iOS 4.3.5 prior to going to iOS 5? (I do not think I was, but I'm not 100% sure)

2. Are you able to find your texts in Spotlight on the phone? (No, I can't find any of my texts using Spotlight)

I do have an Applecare case number, so I will report back if I find anything.
