I wish I had found this BEFORE I up?graded.

All my previous backups do not appear in iTunes or in the sync backup folder on the hard drive, so I can't even use them. I use the phone for work and there are a LOT of messages with a LOT of very important stuff in them. I refuse to use cloud computing so now I am completely stuffed. Thanks Apple. I should have got the galaxy.......

Where the heck was the warning that this will remove your sms messages??????

hi entrpopy - i dont even remember now! but - working logically again, i would say i was either referring to a peice of software that supported encrypted backups, or, i was referring to using itunes to decode the backup and re-do it as a non-encrypted backup.

This *may* require the use of an old version of itunes (which, if your on a mac, you will need to punch in some sudo commands to do), and it may require the use of an iphone which currently has 4.3.x iOS on it. (or a previously jailbroken iphone that has a blob saved for 4.3.x to downgrade).

I'll look into it some more if i get time later - hope you find something

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I am on a mac (new to mac but familiar with unix )

I was using a mobilesyncbrowser program and it detected an encrypted backup from about a week ago 12/14. However, I am not able to see a backup from that time in the users/library/mobilesynch/backup folder.

I am hoping i can retrieve my lost sms messages from that encrypted backup. (The itunes restore doesn't see it).

background info:

using iphone3gs jailbroken.

I did not initiate an upgrade to ios5, it crashed over the weekend (12/18) and after attempting to reboot a number of times, it showed the connect to itunes picture (like when you first get your iphone). Then, after reluctantly connecting to itunes, it only gave an option of upgrading to OS5 ... and the rest is history 😟

Not sure if there is a blob save for 4.3.x on my iphone, it seems to have done a wipe and then a restore and synch with the upgrade.

I am hoping I can find a solution. had about 2 years of sms messages that I needed to keep and I can't do the solutions presented in this forum due to the only viable backup being encyrpted.

i will continue looking and present any findings here in this thread but your help is very much appreciated!

If it's not in that folder, that's why itunes can't see it.

Can you find it anywhere else ?

If you do have a backup, i reccommend you save and duplicate it to a safe area of your hard disk until you figure out a way to get what you need.

What's your main problem?, is it that you enter your password, and you have no SMS' when you restore, or is it that itunes can't even see your encrypted backup so you have nothing ?

also - earnold25 - If you still have that encrypted backup that contains your sms' - we can still get the sms.db from it using a different method - private message me if you would like help with this. I posted it and apple erased it (though they didn't substitute it with any other solution) 🙂

Thank you!
