Your's definitely seems to be a good suggestion. However for countries where there is no support through a call center, I'm just unable to get contact details through email so that I can convey "SIM Not supported Issue". I'm writing from India and we don't have a customer contact facililty through phone. Please advice.
Funny, you have already been answered in another thread.
Has anyone had any success updating this weekend to IOS5?
Intrestingly enough I received a Apple Care email as a follow up to my visit on the 13th - it came to me in French. Which must have been where my phone is originally from and possibly solves who Martin LaF... was and why he was on my work order and why it said I had a cracked screen on a previous phone when it was only the home button that quit working.
I plan on updating again in the morning - probably should go ahead and set a genuis bar appointment again.
went to the genius bar today and got another phone... Apple's servers are down today and they couldn't apply the update there for me.. so, I have a working phone on 4.3.5 for my business trip tomorrow, no iOS5 for me for at least 3 weeks till I get back home 😟
Hi thanks for the solution, now got a weird question to you.
Actually bought my iphone 3GS from O2 UK it was Officially unlocked by O2(Factory Unlock). I live in India and until now I have no issues after upgrading to ios5 too (sim card not valid kind too. where my wife had this issue sorted out with the replacement here as it was under warranty).
Thing is now I'm changing the operator in India after reading all the discussions in the thread now am bit confused(To say precisely More worried). AFter changing the operator whether new sim works on my iphone 3GS with ios5?? as in the discussions any iccid issues or imei conflicts as I am inserting the new sim after succesful upgradation of ios5and sim card change??. Awaiting for any replies.. Thanks

iOS 5 update "Sim not compatible" SOLUTION!!!
Ok so after going to the apple store and at&t multiple times I went to apple and got a replacement. I brought the replacement I paid $79.00 plus tax for home and plugged it into itunes. The same issue came up on a new device with iOS 5.0 installed. Now i am using an iPhone 3GS. So i called apple and got some awesome help.
The issue is that the "profile" associate with the phone is incorrect. My phone's profile was set for Germany even though I have never been there.
This is the reason the device wouldn't activate properly, even though there was a hardware change.
Simply call apple if your device is out of warranty or in warranty and tell them that there is a "sim not supported" issue with your device. If they say you need to pay for the phone support tell them this is an exception since there is a profile issue with your account through apple.
The profile must have been altered or switched during the iOS 5.0 update. This is an apple profile issue. It is not the device, your computer, itunes, or any other concievable idea. It's all on apple's servers.
This is a solution for all iOS 5.0 Compatible Devices
Good Luck and if this helps please like my post!

Your Phnone was unlocked by O2.
You use a sim card from a diffrent provider in India.
Changing the provider will not re-lock the phone, so no probleem at all.
Test this before - if you want - by putting in a sim card of another provider than you have now (sim card from a friend or relative) and try making pfone calls.
success
Thanks for your prompt reply.
Well Before upgrading to ios5, i've used other providers no issues at all.But as ios5 is creating some mess with iccid and imei so bit confusion started, as am not aware of the technology/method they use for iccid.
I wish it wont harm my device. Awaiting for reply. Thnx

From your point, I understood on reinserting different provider simcard it wont relock the phone on ios5?
Is that you mean. If that is the case I would be very happy guy.
yes that is what I mean: If the simlock is unlocked officially (in your case O2), no one can lock it again. Just put the simcard in, and don't worry.
As Im sitting in the Stamford CT Apple store waiting for my second iphone 4 replacment in one week after i tried to update to ios 5. My sim card was not supported again! It is a communication issue between ATT and Apple. do not update until you call ATT and tell them you are updating!!!!! Apple is giving me another phone and they are going to try and update it here. i will let you know.
I have just come of the phone from a really helpful guy from orange. He suspects the following. When my iphone 4 was purchased it was purchased from o2, eventhough it was not locked to the o2 network. I know this as a number of people had different sim from different carriers which they placed in their new iphone 4's last year and they worked straightaway. (well after they obtaining micro sims)... This included the one I had as well.
What appears to have happen is when the phone was upgraded to iOS5, then phone was reset back to the original settings and along with it was the original carrier that the phone was bought from....i.e. o2. Obviously now I have two phone an iphone 4 and an iphone 4s.. I have two micro sims with orange, which neither work in the upgraded iphone 4 but both work in the iphone 4s.
So moral of story.... Ask O2 and other carriers of the original phone to remove the carrier lock on the iphone 4 to allow the phone to work with other carriers......
Has anyone tried what vikky777 said about calling Apple and updating your info??? I am just curious to see if this works since I want to update my iPhone 4 to ios 5. I have tried several times with a fail and no my phone has never been jailbroken, just exchanged.
After getting a replacement for my first bricked phone (Saturday), I called AT&T to make sure that the sim card number and IMEI number matched in their database(Monday).. The numbers did not match, but were changed to match by an AT&T rep. I called Apple and talked with a Sr Advisor(Friday) and was assured that all the numbers matched in all the databases that she had access to and told me it was safe to update. I updated and bricked a second phone... When I called back and talked to the same Sr Advisor.. She connected me with an AT&T rep on the phone.. niether could find anything wrong with the information in their databases. I was told the problem would be forwarded to engineering and they would call me within 24 hours. I immeadiately made a genius bar appointent for Sunday. I never heard anything back over the weekend.. I got my phone replaced at the Apple store that's local (45mins away). I tried to get the genius to upgrade the phones software there, but apparently Apple's servers were down sunday. So, basically I have a recently replaced phone, it just still has the older OS..
Keeping in mind that the cutting edge is usually close to the bleeding edge... 🙂
Ok I was at the apple store today with my second bricked iPhone 4 in 1 week and after calls to AT&T and the G bar's best efforts they gave me my 3rd iPhone 4 with an updated iOS 5. How they did it was after bricking 2 more behind the counter they activated my newest phone then removed the sim card before updating the os. It worked as I am using it now. So Apple please fix this issue, until then I would remove your sim card right before updating to ios 5 then install card! Works!
