use iMessage with iCloud email alias?

I set up iCloud with my old .mac / mobileMe account. So far no trouble.

But I've been using some email aliases that I use for actually emailing and kept the "core" email address (the iCloud log in) a "secret". (Just because I'm afraid of spam. An alias is easier changed than a whole Apple-ID with iCloud in the backseat now - in case I end up on a spammers-list).

Now when using iMessage I need to give out an email address (of course). I tried to use one of my iCloud addresses (aliases) but it won't accept those. Only the iCloud log-in Email address. Which I don't want to give to my friends or other people.

Is it supposed to ONLY work with your iCloud log in?

Chris A.,

This is what I found about iCloud and .me aliases(http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4632):

Summary

As of June 6, 2011, the following changes to MobileMe email aliases are no longer supported:

  • Adding a new alias
  • Deleting an existing alias
  • Changing the active or inactive status of an alias
  • Changing the color or description of an alias

Products Affected

MobileMe

Currently active email aliases will continue to work for sending and receiving emails. (Mayemac comment: I still can use my aliases to send and receive emails from Microsoft Outlook in a PC but I wonder if this is just the only thing tha we will be able do with the aliases; send and receive emails and that's it).

The ability to add, delete, or change an email alias will be available for MobileMe members that move to iCloud, once it is available this fall.

I'm still having problems with my aliases as well and haven't figured out yet how to solve them, but at least I was able to add all of the real and aliases emaill addresses in Settings>messages, as Received At addresses by adding them first directly into my Apple account (https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/9/wa/directToSignIn?w osid=HjlK10qeSWnPnWAP22tUF0&localang=en_US) and then I was able to enter all my aliases in the iPhone and iPad under the messages settings. Having figure out yet how to sync the iMessages between my iPhone and iPad, though.

This worked for me as well. This is what I wrote in one of my previous replies above:

But even though I had issues when I wrote the reply above, I was able to add my aliases and now I'm using it for iMessages without any issues. I think is worth trying to add the emails and aliases to the apple id account profile and do it more than once if it doesnt work the first time. I did it like three times until the server added and recognized my aliases 🙂 There's still server issues causing headaches to people.

I remember that before I converted to iCloud it asked something about the emails used since I had a family account under the old me.com services. I went there and added an email address for my daughter but I can't remember if I did something with the aliases that I used. But I dont think I did anything about them. They were converted as well. Will research more here and post the answer if I found it 🙂

It appears that if you want to use an additional email other than the standard iCloud email address you need to associate it with your account. So providing the email address you want to use, is not an appleid inits own right, you just need to associate it to your account.

visit appleid.apple.com and choose manage my id.

log on using iCloud address, then add email. Enter the details of the address you want to use. Save and exit. This sends an email to the email address with a verification link, veryfiy the address,

On the iPhone in the settings > Messages add the email address. All will work well.

This can all be done through the phone if the email account also exists on the device.

Hope this helps.

Same problem here. I have noticed that it's just with my mac.com/mobileme aliases. I tried my bellsouth email; it saved and I got the confirmation immediately. It will not save my mac.com/mobileme alias in Safari, Firefox, nor on my iPhone.

Maybe it has to do with the alias actually being part of the main account, and not a standalone address.

So, because I am trying to use an old alias with a new technology, it's rejecting it?

I knew about the changes to MobileMe, but it doesn't say anything about not working with iMessage.

It's an issue to me because my alias is my first.last name, which is easier to give to people (and more mature sounding than my old original ID)

Hm. Maybe I should change my main account ID now that it's possible without creating a brand new acccount.

Chris,

I hope they fix this very soon. I don't even want to touch my account since I'm afraid it will get messed up. I have sync issues with iMessages for messages received between the iPhone and the iPad and I think is due to the problems with the emails, but I'm afraid to change them. Yesterday I tried to add another .mac alias that I used in the past, and it kept reloading like it did to you.
