Updated iPad to iOS5. Now all apps are gone!

I updated the OS on my iPad 1st gen to 5. I got the restore error like many people have gotten. I tried again and it succesfully updated to 5. When I finally got through the initial setup, I noticed all the apps I purchased were gone! I did a restore and it was the same state. So, I restored from a backup I did yesterday. All my apps are still gone.

Any ideas?

Did all that you describe, however when choosing the third option (restore from itunes), the restoration kept bringing up errors.

The setup froze and only setting up as new phone was possible.

I am now trying to restore from my last backup and it keeps failing!

So all my data is lost...

Any remedy for this? Please?

I have work photos and finance apps that I have to restore or I might lose my job!

I didn't unplug early and did back-up prior to update..

Your post is very helpful, but did not work in my case. I updated my iPad 2 to iOS 5 starting around 2 pm yesterday (unaware of the backup feature prior to updating), and did not unplug it until about 8 pm after 2 hours on the phone with 2 very nice Apple support techs. But my apps and data, and photos and music are still all gone (from the iPad). The photos and music I'm not so worried about, because I can get back from elsewhere on my computer...(although this is extremely annoying).

We tried everything from restore from backup to revert to even copying the backup files out of their system folder to make sure they weren't corrupted. Nothing got the data in my apps back, most importantly all of the usernames and passwords for every website I use, including all financial websites, from my Keeper Data Vault app.

The main problem seems to be that all of the apps I have purchased (30) do not show up in either the iPad app sync screen when it is plugged in OR the iTunes Store purchased apps screen. 10 are missing. They only ALL show up on the iPad App Store "purchased" tab, on the iPad itself. Even the techs could not understand this. (yes, they were all purchased with the same Apple ID). So when I redownload them from the iPad App Store, they are like new with all data missing. Even if I try to restore from a backup after that, which the tech thought would bring back my data, since in theory my data should be stored in my restore file, there is still no data.

Any ideas?

I have a related but different problem and would appreciate any help. My wife updated her gen 1 iPad to iOS5 but in the process filled up the disk on her hard drive so it could not finish her restore of all the apps, photos, documents, etc. Unfortunately the iPad had not been backed up before starting the upgrade.

I tried various things to reduce the data on the hard drive or replace it entirely - the 2nd drive wound up crashing! Eventually I just got rid of more files and had enough room to finish the restore - or so I thought. For some reason I don't understand it couldn't finish although there was enough disk space now.

I decided to do a regular restore and that seemed to work fine-or so I thought. Now the problem-my wife had a drawing program and a writing program with significant work done in both. Even though the apps are now back, the files are not.

Is there somewhere on the computer's hard drive where a copy of those types of files would have been placed as part of the upgrade process? If so, where?

The iPad is now set to back-up to the Cloud. Is it possible to look at the contents there and see if those files were backed-up there during the upgrade process?

thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I had a similar problem. Synced phone w/ ios5 and all ipad apps disappeared. followed the advice to

1) power down device

2 restart and go to app store: purchased.

3) apps were there (new phone apps and old purchased and free apps for ipad). I downloaded all to my ipad.

4) as someone observes, the organization in folders is lost.

Please apple fix this so-called syncing process!

These are user-to-user forums, they are not monitored by Apple (there are too many forums/threads/messages for that to happen).

If the apps were on your computer's iTunes then did you try restoring to your last backup ? The apps (and your synced media content) need to be on your computer's iTunes for a restore to work fully, as a backup doesn't contain the actual apps, just their content and settings.

You, sir, are a scholar and a gentleman. You solved the problem for me why everything else synced when updated iPad to ios5 except for my apps. Indeed, upon selecting my ipad in itunes then finding the "Apps" tab, I find the "Sync Apps" option needed to be checked.

God bless you. And if you don't believe in God, then may you at least be served excellent coffee...and if you don't drink coffee, then whatever floats your boat I hope will float it that bit higher. In short..thanks.
