Lost photos after iOS 5 update?

After updating to iOS 5, my photos were no longer in my camera roll, yet everything else was intact? Any solutions I had over 500 photos and tons of memories. 😢

I, too lost all my pictures after upgrading to ios5. Here was an easy solution for me. I installed Ubuntu 11.10 (latest) inside a VirtualBox. Then I attached my iPhone and let the Ubuntu see it. Immediately, there was an iPhone visible with several directories. I found all my photos inside DCIM/100APPLE and saved those away just in case. Then I saved and deleted PhotoData/Photos.sqlite and PhotoData/PhotosAux.sqlite. I rebooted the iPhone. When I opened Cameraroll it first indicated no pictures, but after a moment it was restoring all my pictures! Once again, Linux saves the day. Note, the original solution mentioned above mentions a file in DCIM/MISC named info.plist. I did not have that on my phone. Everything still worked.

I also lost my photos after upgrading to iOS5 but was able to recover them more simply then I expected. I hooked my iPhone 3GS up to my PC, opened up Windows Explorer, scrolled down on the left side to "Computer". Under that I saw my iPhone listed as if it was an external hard-drive. I double-clicked so it said "internal storage", then double-clicked again to find the folder "DCIM". All of my photos were still in there even though my phone wasn't showing them. I dragged them manually onto my PC. I don't have them back on my phone, but at the very least they are not lost.

I just hooked the iPhone upto my WDTV media streamer to see if it could see any photos. It could see photos fine, which is great, however it couldn't see the few hundred "missing" photos. So annoyed about this.

Annoyed at myself for not backing them up manually and trusting iTunes

Annoyed at Apple for losing my photos with the iOS5 update.

A lesson learned, but it could of been taught in a less cruel way 😟 Lots of memories on those pics...

Before I recovered my photos as described above, after connecting my iPhone to my PC, the only files in DCIM were the few I had just taken after the ios5 upgrade. The photos I had lost were not there. It is interesting, though, that now after the recovery, they do show up.

My lesson from all this is that I need to pay more attention to backing up my photos. I guess you get to thinking they aren't that important until they are gone, then they are priceless.

I have the same exact problem. I upgraded my iPhone 4 IOS to IOS 5. It backed up all data. However, after the upgrade, I don't see my photos and apps. I only see some photos. Purchased apps is no biggie since I can recover these. The 400 plus photos are more critical for me. I tried some of the suggestions on this forum but no luck. I used iExplore but can only see the photos that I already have on the phone not the missing one.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

Same problem for me upon updating iPhone 4 to iOS5 this week. Apple Care no help. Having skimmed this discussion it seems the key may be to download iphone explorer. Having done so I find that it won't work on my PowerMac G4 upgraded to OS 10.5 ( because not Intel based I presume). This is the Mac I sync my iPhone and iPad to.

Suppose I use my wife's Intel-based macbook to run iPhone explorer. Will it 'see" my iPhone even though I never synced the iphone with the Macbook?
