Problems with IOS 5 Music App

There are several problems with IOS5 Music app that I noticed, (These problems were not present in previous IOS)

1. Slower loading for songs with lyrics - There is a slight (1~1.5) second delay in bringing up new album art/lyrics/etc when switching songs. The way it delays feels very unstable like the app is about to crash.

2. Graphical glitch when loading some songs with lyrics - The area between the section with the progress bar/repeat/shuffle button is and the section with the lyrics become screwed up, the album art and overlay effect in that area become distorted. This goes off when lyrics is turned off by tapping on the screen then bringing it back up. However the problem persists when track is changed.

3. Unnatural scrolling of lyrics - Scrolling lyrics (especailly when I do it fast) feels buggy.

4. CRASHES with some Apple Lossless tracks that causes the springboard to respring - the app crashes with some Apple Lossless tracks. I do not know what is causing the crash. The file is fully tagged with lyrics/albumart. It seems to load and then it lags then crashes. The track played fine in previous versions (4.1 and 4.3.5). I can assure you that there is nothing wrong with the file.

5. Apple Lossless tracks very slow to load - Those tracks are just generally slower when loading and the problem with lyrics gets even more severe if the track is Apple Lossless.

*Most of those problems occur in greater severity for Apple Lossless than mp3 files.

Very unhappy about this update at the moment. What's the point of adding all new features if it cant handle the very crucial component...

iPod touch, IOS 5.

Bummer.

I used one of Doug's scripts to get a full list of all of my cover art. I couldn't isloate exact sizes, but I could take a guess as to which ones were "oversized" based on the file size.

If you have a Mac you can install this script in iTunes and run it on a few or all of your albums:

http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=savealbumart

This is the download/install FAQ:

http://dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/downloadfaq.php

Here are the settings I used and an example of the results:

Since I pulled all of my "oversized" cover art this just shows the differences between artwork that's somewhere between 300 x 300 and 600 x 600...however if you have some very large artwork the file size will really stand out. It's kind of painstaking, but after a while you can pretty quickly see which ones might be a problem.

Also, this is a great place to find quality cover art:

I probably replaced about 50 large cover art files with smaller ones (600 x 600) and it made quite a difference with how responsive the Music App would run on both my iPhone 4 and iPad. I would think your iPod Touch would work the same way, but I don't have one so can't test it.

Hope that helps!

Well Thanks Chaps, just did this and hey presto! it works no more crashing.

If it's this simple why haven't the mighty Apple made this more widely known? Though still begs the question 'how come we didn't have to do this in previous versions and why is V5.01 still slow'

Many thanks

Exactly...why won't the new Music App handle the same files as the original iPod App? Very frustrating.

Frankly, I'd be a happy camper if they just brought the iPod App back, but that's probably not going to happen.

Reducing the size of "oversized" cover art may not fix things for everyone, but it certainly should be included in Apple's Music App Troubleshooting Tips. But again, it shouldn't be an issue IMHO.

Glad to hear things are working for you now though. Enjoy! 🙂

Well we've been getting a swathe of convoluted work arounds and partial fixes but my iPod Touch is still taking ages to open playlists that opened fine on the previous OS and they don't maintain the same order as they appear in iTunes which they also used to do.

The one reply or explanation we don't have is one from Apple.

I'm going to switch off from this discussion now (although I there doesn't seem to be an 'Unsubscribe' for this particular discussion, so I guess I have to unsubscribe from all).

The one thing I have learnt from the iOS5 and Lion updates is that I need to broaden my horizons. So when I upgrade to a smart phone, I'll probably go Galaxy (although I can't imagine i'll cheat on my MacBook)

iOS 5 Music.app - EPIC FAIL !!!!!!!!!!!!

I have an idea those of us that have their iPad still inside their warranty date or have extended warranties why don't we just all start sending our iPads back as faulty if apple doesn't accept that there is an iOS fault then the fault must lay with the iPad and under warranty we have the right to demand that apple fix or replace the broken product if we just keep doing this then I'm sure apple will get the idea as it will start to cost them losses plus if this gets leaked to the media that apple customers are returning their devices because of inaction of apple to support it's customers than again I'm sure apple will be forced to take notice I as of the new year will be sending mine back right away luckily I have the extended warranty and apple care which means that they will send out a replacement first so at no time am I left with out an iPad but trust me I will be returning that one as well and I intend to carry on this each week which is my right too until the product is fixed.

It's an idea just thought if we all do it then that's a lot of iPads being returned apple will notice this.

Now that's one of the BEST ideas I've seen in a long while.

Very nice "out of the box" (pun intended) thinking !!

It might just work !!!

Keep sending our frustrations over this functionality stripping to Apple through feedback!

Hi,

I had a similar issue recently with iOS 5.0.1 slowing down my iPhone 4 CoverFlow. Like all others here I too found the Music App in iOS 4.3 almost faultless before this upgrade. However, in my case I found that CoverFlow seemed to be "lumpy" due to large embedded album art. i.e. Pictures tagged in the music MP3s that were larger than the recommended 300x300 pixels. In one case the picture was 2000x2000 pixels before I re-sized it! I suspect that the new CoverFlow is resizing the actual Artwork "on the fly".

After proving my assumption with a few "manual" resizing of selected Artwork. I did a little searching and I came accross this free little tool. Thanks Hot Coffee Software! http://hcware.110mb.com/mp3art/index.htm

It allows embedded art work in MP3s to be resized. The best bit being that it allows "batch" resizing of MP3 art by file or folder. I used the default 250x250 pixels @ 80% and resized some 1500 songs in about 3 minutes by setting the "Add Folder" in Sanse's tool to the root music folder that was being accessed by iTunes. I shut down iTunes before starting the re-size run.

I set iTunes to not sync my music (one check box in iTunes 10) so that all music was cleared from the iPhone before re-syncing. If you don't do this, you may get errors as iTunes tries to "merge" new data to your music files. It's only a small issue here, because I then re-synced after resizing the MP3 art.

Although not a perfect solution, it made my CoverFlow in iOS 5.0.1 on my iPhone 4 considerably faster and smoother.

I hope this helps until the Apple techies solve this issue.

yEah I had this problem too. What I did to fix it was I highlighted each song that nelongs to the albu that is being multiplied by holding "shigt+ctrl" whiule clicking on the songs that belong to that album.

Once they were all highlighted I right clicked on them and clicked "apply all matching feilds". Or something like that and it made all the seperate songs into one sinlge album cover.

However I cannot get this to work with a couple youtube songs (vids that were converted to mp3).

Thanks for that. I had some of the same issues with large cover art files. Once I replaced them with smaller versions using the method I posted earlier (for Mac) all of the cover art appeared properly in iTunes and all of my iDevices via iTunes Match. The Windows program looks like a good option.

FWIW the standard cover art delivered directly from iTunes is 600 x 600 pixels. I still have some larger than that, but less than 1000 x 1000 and there haven't been any problems.

Thanks again and enjoy!

I like the new features in the new music player, like able to delete songs without i tunes etc, but there are lots of bugs in the app, few i have noticed:

1. Slow loading of album art, it takes few sec(1-3) to change album art in the music player when the song is changes.

2. When you hold the device horizontally the album arts take time to load and are laggy.

3. Can't play audiobooks, i copy some mp3 files mark them as audiobooks, when i try to play them it just starts skipping the files in a loop.

I hope they fix it soon, maybe next ios update (but i think they will first try to prevent people from Jailbreaking, then fixing the bugs)

Oh the problem is on my both Ipod touch 3g and 4g.
