Problems with IOS 5 Music App

There are several problems with IOS5 Music app that I noticed, (These problems were not present in previous IOS)

1. Slower loading for songs with lyrics - There is a slight (1~1.5) second delay in bringing up new album art/lyrics/etc when switching songs. The way it delays feels very unstable like the app is about to crash.

2. Graphical glitch when loading some songs with lyrics - The area between the section with the progress bar/repeat/shuffle button is and the section with the lyrics become screwed up, the album art and overlay effect in that area become distorted. This goes off when lyrics is turned off by tapping on the screen then bringing it back up. However the problem persists when track is changed.

3. Unnatural scrolling of lyrics - Scrolling lyrics (especailly when I do it fast) feels buggy.

4. CRASHES with some Apple Lossless tracks that causes the springboard to respring - the app crashes with some Apple Lossless tracks. I do not know what is causing the crash. The file is fully tagged with lyrics/albumart. It seems to load and then it lags then crashes. The track played fine in previous versions (4.1 and 4.3.5). I can assure you that there is nothing wrong with the file.

5. Apple Lossless tracks very slow to load - Those tracks are just generally slower when loading and the problem with lyrics gets even more severe if the track is Apple Lossless.

*Most of those problems occur in greater severity for Apple Lossless than mp3 files.

Very unhappy about this update at the moment. What's the point of adding all new features if it cant handle the very crucial component...

iPod touch, IOS 5.

My problems were solved using this article. I had a few songs that were causing problems (large cover art and some variable bit rate songs). I simply converted the VBR songs and changed the artwork to 600x600. The sorting problems are different, but editing the "Sort Artists" and "Sort Album" fields should fix that. Google search Doug's Applescripts to automate those processes. Hope this helps!

I have an Ipod Touch 4g 32gb just for my music, for apps ans stuff i have an iphone 4s wich had his problems and now it works fine. But i realized all my music was missing, altough the ipod had 4015 songs, so it had to be there somewere...

I found it under 123 artist, in a ""unnamed artist", then i saw all the albums and like 2200 songs!

After searching how to fix it, it couldn't be fixed. I didn't wanted to do a restore, so i went inside the ipod to (don't ask, you people know how i did it but it was the only way i could fix my 299 USD MP3!!) var/mobile/media/ and deleted itunes_control

Resync and hard reboot, it was fixed.

I'm not sure but i think this was caused by wifi sync, when the router went down idk why... hope it helps people

I don't know if it's been mentionned before because i haven't read the 15 pages but:

since upgrade to ios5.01 on my iphone4, the music i upload to the device is always corrupted (plays fine in itiunes)

principal symptom is the songs start in the middle and after 10-15 seconds goes back to the beginning to play the intro but the progress bar is running fine from start! rest of the song is chaotic as well...

saw and tried a few leads:

-unsync -> resync

-uncheck "save song position" (something like that)

-restore ios5

none worked

i'm on a pc running W7.

One thing i noticed though:

depending on the USB port, using the main one and unplugging every other USB device, i can get a few album to run correctly.

hope this helps...

That sounds terribly frustrating, but I can say that after having followed this thread and numerous others here and elsewhere about the iOS 5 Music App, I haven't read about anyone having a similar issue. It sounds very much like it's a localized problem.

If you're able to resolve things by doing something with your USB cable/port, etc. I'd have a look at all of the elements including the cable itself, ports, hubs and so on. Then I'd look at your system and how its handling connections. It just doesn't seem likely that it has anything to do with the Music App or even iOS 5 directly.

Otherwise it may have something to do with your phone. If you haven't already you might want to try some or all of these tips, particularly resetting (not restarting) your iPhone...

Quit All Apps: To quit an app double press the Home button and the Multitasking Tray will appear at the bottom of the screen revealing all of the open apps. Tap and hold any app icon until all of the icons start jiggling. A red circle with a "-" (minus sign) will appear in the upper left-hand corner of each icon. Tap the red circle and the app will close.

Restart: Press and hold down the Sleep/wake switch on the top edge of the device for few seconds until the red slider appears, slide this across to shut the device down. Restart the device by pressing the Sleep/wake switch until the Apple logo appears.

Reset: You can do this by pressing the Home button and the Sleep/wake switch on the top the device's case and holding them down together for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo. The device should then reset itself. The boot up process takes a few minutes and then the device should be responsive again. More here:

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

If the issue started right after the upgrade from iOS v5.0 to v5.0.1 there may be some data corrpution. That can be addressed by restoring your phone...

Hope that helps...others may have some ideas as well.

I totally confirm the problems that you mention here. I made this mistake too to upgrade my ipod touch 4 from 4.3.3 to 5.0.1 despite of warnings I received from my friends about such mulfunctions.

I live in Iran. People here love Apple products so much. This brand is somehow legendary among people. So, no one could expect Apple to release such an update that makes the music player a junk.
We have right to expect the best and richest electronic company in the world no to make such big mistakes.se consider what people expect from you Apple guys. And eliminate this music coverflow and other things out of the next update, and make sure it won't happen again.

Hi jasonia

I have exactly the same problem on both my iPod Touch 3G and iPhone 4 when upgrading to iOS5. It seems that any changes you make to the track's data via iTunes (whilst manually managing the music on the device) doesn't reflect the changes on the device.

My only solution so far is to edit the music manually (not via iTunes) then copy to the device via iTunes. In other words don't use iTunes to edit any track data. This wasn't the case with iOS4 as all track data changes were correctly synced...

Cheers

I am getting so annoyed right now. If I try to skip too many songs my ipod resprings. Then its moving so slow. So many of my apps keep crashing ... 😠 Then it just seems like my battery is going within an hour. Even my ipad has started crashing every since I updated. It seems to keep getting worse. None of my things are jailbroken, and Apple can't even help.

Frustrating indeed. You may have tried some or all of these tips, but if not you could try a few, particularly resetting (not restarting) your devices.

Quit Apps: To quit an app double press the Home button and the Multitasking Tray will appear at the bottom of the screen revealing all of the open apps. Tap and hold any app icon until all of the icons start jiggling. A red circle with a "-" (minus sign) will appear in the upper left-hand corner of each icon. Tap the red circle and the app will close.

Force Quit App: Open a default iOS application, such as Stocks, Calculator, or Weather.

  • Press and hold down the Power button until the “Slide to Power Off” dialog appears, then release
  • Now press and hold the Home button until the “Slide to Power Off” screen disappears, force quitting the application

Restart: Press and hold down the Sleep/wake switch on the top edge of the device for few seconds until the red slider appears, slide this across to shut the iPad down.

RESTORE: Worst case you could try restoring to the factory settings.

  1. First make sure you have a USB 2.0 connection cable and the latest version of iTunes installed
  2. Connect the device to your Mac or PC and launch iTunes
  3. In the Devices section click on the device's icon then the Summary tab and then click on the Restore button
  4. When prompted, click on Back Up to back up all your iPad's media and settings
  5. Then click on the Restore button
  6. This will restore your device to its factory settings and install the latest version of the operating system. Once this is completed, the device will restart
  7. You can now restore all your device's media and settings from the most recent back up then click Continue. Your devoce should now be up and running again...

I'm on iOS 5.0.1 now and the Music App on my iPad and my iPhone 4 isn't optimal by any means (compared to the original iPod App) but after cutting my playlists to less than 1,000 songs and resetting both the iPad and iPhone it works fairly well. Battery hasn't been an issue on either one.

Hope that helps.

Ooops...I see I posted basically the same info earlier. Sometimes these threads become a blur. 😊

I've been having sporadic failure to load the Music app (press icon, white screen for like 30 seconds, system reverts to main screen) including once or twice before iOS 5.0.1. Mostly a resynch would make the problem go away but no longer. I ran resynch, reset and restore with no luck. What finally worked as to delete all my playlists from within iTunes on the PC and then synch my iPod Touch (64gb - gen 4). Not a big problem as my playlists equaled the genre labels so I can still sort by genre. My quess is there is something about iOS 5.0.1 that does not "like" either lots of playlists (ca. 20 in my case) or playlists with lots of tracks (don't know what my biggest playlist was but I'm sure some were large with ca. 8,000 tracks totalling ca. 44gbs of space).

FYI deleting the most recently accessed playlist did not help. Also all albums have art work and all tracks are MP3.

As you've suggested, I've found regular and Smart Playlists to be the new Music App's biggest weakness. In my case I had to put my playlists on a diet. I actually created more (30) but smaller playlists (less than 1,000 tracks each) to get the Music App to behave somewhat normally. It's still slow as compared to the original iPod App, but it works much better now.

I also found that if I leave the Music App on "Albums" or "Artists" when I shut it down that it starts up much faster than if I leave it on "Playlists". It appears that it does not cache anything and if it starts up on "Playlists" the latency increases quite a bit.

Start up time (blank screen to icons) on a good day is about 6 to 10 seconds which I still find unacceptable. I really hope that the next iOS update addresses these issues.

After upgrading my iPod 3gs to ios5 audiobooks are no longer listed on the ipod. The files are there, I can see them in iTunes, I can play them in iTunes, but they do not exist as far as the music app is concerned. I'm not impressed, this is one of my major uses of the ipod and now it's gone.

At least Apple should allow an easy way to downgrade, that way I wwould be mildly annoyed at the inconvenience, instead of seriously upset. One of the reasons for buying Apple is that it "just works". I have no energy to spend hours learning how to hack the equipment just to regain basic functionality.

That's interesting. I don't have an iPod but audiobooks work with the Music App on my iPhone 4 and my iPad. Books I've purchased from Audible as well as those I've ripped (with Audiobook Builder) play fine.

I access them by tapping on the "More" navigation button at the bottom of the Music App and then "Audiobooks":

User uploaded file

I'm not sure if it's the same for the iPod though.

You could try syncing your iPod, uncheck "Sync Books" in iTunes, sync, disconnect then reconnect and re-check "Sync Books" and then "All" or "Selected". That will delete them completely from your iPod and then re-add them.

I saw a similar discussion here (but without a resolution):
