Problems with IOS 5 Music App

There are several problems with IOS5 Music app that I noticed, (These problems were not present in previous IOS)

1. Slower loading for songs with lyrics - There is a slight (1~1.5) second delay in bringing up new album art/lyrics/etc when switching songs. The way it delays feels very unstable like the app is about to crash.

2. Graphical glitch when loading some songs with lyrics - The area between the section with the progress bar/repeat/shuffle button is and the section with the lyrics become screwed up, the album art and overlay effect in that area become distorted. This goes off when lyrics is turned off by tapping on the screen then bringing it back up. However the problem persists when track is changed.

3. Unnatural scrolling of lyrics - Scrolling lyrics (especailly when I do it fast) feels buggy.

4. CRASHES with some Apple Lossless tracks that causes the springboard to respring - the app crashes with some Apple Lossless tracks. I do not know what is causing the crash. The file is fully tagged with lyrics/albumart. It seems to load and then it lags then crashes. The track played fine in previous versions (4.1 and 4.3.5). I can assure you that there is nothing wrong with the file.

5. Apple Lossless tracks very slow to load - Those tracks are just generally slower when loading and the problem with lyrics gets even more severe if the track is Apple Lossless.

*Most of those problems occur in greater severity for Apple Lossless than mp3 files.

Very unhappy about this update at the moment. What's the point of adding all new features if it cant handle the very crucial component...

iPod touch, IOS 5.

Follow-up to my Dec 19 2011 post: I updated my iPhone with IOS 5.1. Although there was no reference to the Music App in the updates's description, it seems to be helping with this bug.

I had worked around the problems in 5.0 x by removing all my Smart Playlists from my iPhone, and replacing them with dumb playlists.

Today, after upgrading my iPhone to 5.1, I removed all the dumb playlists from the phone and replaced them with Smart playlists. I can navigate in and out of the Smart playlists with the Music app very quickly. With Smart playlists on 5.0, the same operation took forever.

It's too soon to tell if this keeps the Music app from crashing, but the early results are very encouraging.

As mentioned on another thread, I've updated my iPad 1 as well as my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1. I've used both normally since and both seem to be running fine.

Although I haven't fully put it through its paces the Music App does seem snappier. The one glitch that I did see immediately after updating was that two playlists were duplicated for some reason. The normal playlist appeared with the duplicate next to it, the only difference being a "1" next to the duplicate's name as in "Classic Rock 1". I touched and held the duplicate playlist unitl the delete "X" appeared, deleted it and everything seems to be good.

Fingers crossed.

I've upgraded to 5.1 and m problems seem to have been resolved on my iPod Touch. The main thing was that smart playlists particularly big ones were taking an age to open after selecting (30 seconds!). They are now opening right away probably as they were before 5.0.

General responsivity on the device is better under 5.1.

There is no mention anywhere that they have addressed these problems but they have. It is very annoying that Apple haven't acknowledged the problems that people are expreiencing with iOS5 and that they're working on it...even Microsoft generally do that with widespread problems!

This whole episode really has tarnished my view of Apple...not that they give a sht !

iOS 5 seems to be Buggy in everything that deals to music... Even the standard ipod player, which was updated in 1OS5 is now MEGA BUGGY, music is jumping withing the song, leads some short part of this song that komes a bit later then jumps back and plays further till that plache where that piece came from and there makes just some noise and plays furter from the end of that song piece... EXTREMELY ANNOYING... The Developers made everything what one could make wrong in that software...

the iPad version of ipod app was changed and GUI was just SPOILED... the rewind timeline is extremely small and the slider is just a little orange line... THAT IS TERRIBLE!!!! Apple used to take care of the usability before, now they seem to take care only about making more money and bringing out to as many gadjets with minimal extra features to make more money...

Another issue is that ald devices have not enough RAM for the stable work of iOS5 and higher...

Utilization of RAM for multiple tasks was made EXTREMELY BAD, that is why Apps Crush more often because the amount of free RAM is less with every new version, and even cause ocasional RESTART of the device. My iPad can just turn OFF and start booting from the Apple sign when it is stressed in any manner (either several apps need more RAM or by installing of the APP)

P.S. This issue was detected by iPhone 4 and iPad 1

Hello people, I just upgraded my 3GS to iOS 5.1, and my Music app won't even load. I open it, white screen, then crash. Any suggestions?

You may have tried some or all of these tips, but if not you could try a few, particularly resetting (not restarting) your device.

Restart: Press and hold down the Sleep/wake switch on the top edge of the device for few seconds until the red slider appears, slide this across to shut the iDevice down. Restart the device by pressing the Sleep/wake switch until the Apple logo appears.

Reset: You can do this by pressing the Home button and the Sleep/wake switch on the top the device's case and holding them down together for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo. The device should then reset itself. The boot up process takes a few minutes and then the device should be responsive again. More here:

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

RESTORE: Worst case you could try restoring to the factory settings.

  1. First make sure you have a USB 2.0 connection cable and the latest version of iTunes installed
  2. Connect the device to your Mac or PC and launch iTunes
  3. In the Devices section click on the device's icon then the Summary tab and then click on the Restore button
  4. When prompted, click on Back Up to back up all your iPad's media and settings
  5. Then click on the Restore button
  6. This will restore your device to its factory settings and install the latest version of the operating system. Once this is completed, the device will restart
  7. You can now restore all your device's media and settings from the most recent back up then click Continue. Your devoce should now be up and running again...

I'm on iOS 5.1 now and the Music App on my iPad and my iPhone 4 isn't optimal by any means (compared to the original iPod App) but it's working considerably better than before.

Hope that helps.

That's right.. I did the restore process (even twice if I'm not mistaking), but that was when I installed the new iOS. I wanted to get rid of everything, so I restored it directly with the new software. Nobody else wants to try and help a poor desperate musicless-32GB-3GS holder?

Okay, but in your other post you said "I recovered with the backup from iOS 4". So I'm just wondering if you did a full restore...without restoring anything from any backup at all? If you're restoring and then using an existing backup there may be an issue with data corruption or compatiblity, etc.

In other words if you haven't, I'd perform a full restore (no backup, no sync) immediately disconnect it from iTunes/your computer and see if the Music App will work. (Even if there's no content it should open normally.) If it still doesn't work "out of the box" so to speak I'm stumped. However if it does work with a fresh install, but not after adding files, then you know that something you're adding or restoring, etc. is causing it to fail.

Sorry if I wasn't clear about that earlier.

Well I forgot to say it in the other post. But yeah, I did thet but I don't know if it works without any data because I didn't bother to try at the time, so I restored it in the first place and only after that I used the backup to recover my data. Not trying to load the Music app oin between that 'cause I had no reason to do so! I will probably try to restore it again and then try the music app, as soon as possible, and I'll let you know... thanks.
