Sounds like iOS 5 is a great update for a device that was designed

    for music playback!

I have solved the problems I am having. I re-synced music wirelessly and (touch wood) artwork problems appear solved. Let's hope and pray this lasts.

The second problem I was having, that music is sorted by album artist, so soundtracks and compilations are harder to group with the artist's own albums, is solved too. In "Settings", click "Music", and switch off "Group By Album Artist". I then had to switch the iPhone off and on again, but it's fixed.

it seems to be gone but this helped me with artists not showing up

Think I found a solution.  Nest your smart playlist requirements within an overall requirement for "Playlist is Music."

To get the little button to show up to alllow nested criteria, press the option/alt key.

This also allowed me, after clicking the column with track numbers in iTunes, to drag/drop my songs in an order I preferred and show up correctly on the iPhone 4 (iOS 5).  I did right click on the playlist and selected "Copy to play order" but forgot to test prior to selecting this.

    Oh yeah!  Cracked the "code"!

Had the same problem on my 4th gen shuffle (version 1.2).  Added the "Playlist is Music" as the top level criteria, twiddled a little with the playlist in iTunes to include copying to play order, and all is good.

    Now for the jams!

Just remember this:  every version brings its own issues.  It's up to us to figure these out and move on.  Would you rather use a zune?  Hehehehe......

    One more thing .... (giggles)

Copy to play order does not seem to be an issue with the iPhone.  Just updated a playlist for my shuffle without the master "Playlist is Music" criteria (I include all shuffle playlists on my iPhone).  Added that criteria back on, synced iPhone with playlist showing on my iPhone (music app running), and presto!  playlist fixed!!

Your method seemed to work for took a while but seems to have solved the problem. Apple should be all over this, this is kinda ridiculous, that an update of this magnitude would cause so many problems in the one thing they had perfect BEFORE the update

I have exactly the same issues with crashes and freezing on large playlists or shuffle playing from the song list. I thought maybe my bluetooth devices were causing a playback issue, but I guess not!!

I'm also having similar problems with the changes I make to my songs. For some reason, the changes are just gone, when before the update it worked just fine.

The only difference b/w our problems is that I noticed this when I had my iPod plugged in to my computer to recharge it, and I played songs from iPod through my computer. But, when I clicked on a song to play, the changes I made to that song from before just undid itself. Then I checked my iPod and the changes were also gone, moreover I'm even unable to play the song. It just skipped over to the next song. I've never had this problem before. and i don't sync my music so the unsyncing solution won't work for me. I hope someone finds a solution soon because this is very frustrating.

I updated my ios (to ios 5) on my iphone 4. Everything working fine, except my music. A lot of my songs are on the iphone, but when i play a song nothing comes out, and it just skips to the next song. I have tried deleting the songs and syncing them again but that didn't work. Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

I updated to iOS 5 on my iPod and am having the same problem that everyone else here is having.  I bring up the music app and it hangs for about 10 seconds, then fails.  I've re-synced many times after removing album art and some times after the resync, the music app does work, but only for a short time.  It is constantly crashing now.  I find it very troubling that the initial intent of this device (music) was competely overlooked or ignored.  Hopefully this is fixed soon!!!

My IOS5 plays my music OK, but I am really missing the ability to switch to album-view when i'm in a playlist. I just see single songs, when i hit the album-button i'm back at all my music.

Am i missing something? Apple, please bring the functionality back!

  • Argiescot Level 1 (0 points)

Walter, I hadn't noticed that function before!!! I wish I had.

I wish I could revert to the previous OS. This reminds me of my last days as a PC owner. The dread of switching the thing on!

Just to add my 2 cents' worth: I too have problems similar to everyone else: "other" has grown to an enormous 9 GB (?); music sometimes plays, sometimes stops; album art is gone; album art is shown for wrong track and so on. I too, have left feedback and am not impressed with this release.

    Here's hoping for a solution before I update ageing mother's iPad1...
