iMessage Caller ID

Anyone else having this problem? Caller ID in Messages settings is set to the phone number, but all iMessages sent are received with the email address (AppleID) as the return contact info. Tried turning iMessage on and off, tried changing called ID to email and back to phone number, but nothing works. Is this just a software bug, or is there some delay in the iMessage verification/registration system due to the millions of people setting up iOS5 tonight?

I had this problem with one of my friends earlier tonight and we got it to work. She was messaging a friend on her phone number, and it would be recieved by said friend as a text message, and when that friend replied it came from the email address even though the phone number was selected as caller ID. So what we did was: Turn off iPhone>take out sim card>put sim card back in>turn on iPhone>delete email address from said contact leaving only the phone number. When we did this, we messaged that friend again to the phone number and it came up as an iMessage right away and everything is working great. Its worth a shot, I dont know for sure if this will fix it but its worth trying. Good Luck everyone.

BooShh's solution worked for me too!

Try using BooShh's solution on your wife's phone -- the one with 2 threads, one email thread and one phone number thread.

1. Turn off iPhone

2. Take out sim card

3. Put sim card back in

4. Turn on iPhone

5. Delete email addresses from said contact leaving only the phone number

6. Go to messages app. The phone number thread from said contact should now be iMessage capable.

7. Feel free to add the email addresses back to the contact now.

I posted my situation on another thread, but it sounds similar to the problems you're seeing here, with a Siri twist. The difference here is that my son has two separate devices and I want to keep separate threads, but Siri won't let me distinguish between the two:

---

My older son has a non-Apple phone with SMS/MMS. He also has an iPod Touch currently running iOS 5. iMessage is configured with his Apple ID and he's able to communicate with his brother's iPod Touch and with our (wife's and my) iPhone 4Ss.

His contact card on my phone has a "mobile" number and an Apple ID email address labeled as "iCloud".

What I have experienced is this:

  • two separate threads in my Messaging app, one to/from his phone, the other to/from his Touch.
  • I can message each separately by opening the respective thread in Messaging
  • When asking Siri to "Tell <son> I'm on my way home", she'll use whatever thread he last messaged me on.
  • If I ask Siri to "Text <son> mobile", she responds "<son> doesn't have a mobile number".
  • If I ask Siri to "Call <son> mobile", she'll dial without complaining.

Maybe I need to try removing his contact altogether and re-adding it, and wiping out any existing message threads. Any other suggestions?

I guess I'll also try the pull-SIM-card suggestion and see if that helps.

I have a solution to all of you who faced this problem of waiting for activations for both FaceTime and iMessage.

Here's how I did mine;

For "FaceTime"

1) Launch "Settings" app

2) Select "FaceTime"

3) Select "Apple ID: (your ID)"

4) Select "Change Location" (to where "Country" your phone number is registered)

5) Select the "Country" you are in

6) Back to "Settings"

Do the same for "iMessage"

1) Launch "Settings" app

2) Select "Messages"

3) Select "Receive At"

4) Select "Apple ID: (your ID)"

5) Select "Change Location" (to where "Country" your phone number is registered)

6) Select the "Country" you are in

7) Exit

After you've done all the settings as aboves; Now hold down the "Home" and "Power" button until you see the "Apple" logo to reboot your iPhone. Let go you fingers after seeing the "Apple" logo appears.

Go back to the "Settings" app.

For "Facetime"

1) Select "FaceTime"

2) You'll notice your "FaceTime" has been activated

3) Go to the bottom and Select "Caller ID"

4) You should have your "Phone Number" selected

5) Back to "Settings"

For "iMessage"

1) Select "Messages"

2) You'll notice your "iMessage" has been activated

3) Select "Receive At" (now you'll see "2 Addresses >)

4) Go to the bottom and Select "Caller ID"

5) You should have your "Phone Number" selected

6) Exit and enjoy your iOS5

Hope that helps. Cheers!

Verizon-folk don't have SIM cards! 😟

None of these things have worked. My texts all appear to be coming from my Apple ID, which means replies go to all my iDevices - even my daughter's iPod. This is maddening - it just started randomly yesterday. I called Apple; they give up. Senior advisor told me to restore my iPhone as NEW. Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot!!?!?!?!? Buggiest iPhone/iOS ever...

Ok mine wasn't working till tomorrow. But Its working now. Here's what you need to do. Go to iMessage and turn on it and same for FaceTime. Wait until you the activation unsuccessful then do hard reboot by pressing home and power button . Then turn on iMessage and FaceTime and let it activate. Do not turn of the wifi. Put your phone on the place where you don't loose signals. That should work otherwise call you carrier they must give you new phone.

Thanks for the post. You say to turn on iMessage and Facetime, then reboot, then turn them on. Did you mean to turn them OFF before the hard reset? The activation is never not successful. It always is. Still doesn't work.

I'm sure it's unrelated, but after that, all my Music and Video content is gone from the phone, even though it shows as being there when I look at the phone via iTunes. Man, this just keeps getting better! Did they subcontract the iOS 5 work to the WinMobile team? 😝
