iOS 5 Music.app on iPad doesn't support audiobook chapters

The "new" Music.app on iOS 5 on iPad does not support viewing of Audiobook (.m4b / .aa) chapters and their titles. Nor does it provide for direct selection of chapters. This is a loss of functionality compared with the iPod.app on iOD 4.3 on iPad. The prior app provided a means of viewing the chapters and their titles and the direct selection of a desired chapter.

The current Music.app does provide for the user to tap the fast forward / backward buttons to skip to chapter marks but there is no display of the chapter title for a selection so there;s no useful way to know where one is in the Audiobook. Further, Audiobooks frequently contain 10s of chapters in a segment (usually limited to around 100 MB / segment (track if you prefer) by Audible).

The iPhone (and I presume iPod Touch) version of the Music.app retains the chapter viewing and selection functionality from previous iOS 4.3. Only the iPad version of the app has lost the functionality.

Without viewing of chapters and their titles and direct selection of chapters, Audiobooks in the Music.app are basically unusable on the iPad.

I filed a bug report on this as a regression - since it is functionality that was present (and still is on the iPhone) and is now lost.

@ Chris CA I wonder how smug you're feeling right now I tried to tell the forum users that a new IPad would be released just in time for Christmas and low and behold there are TWO a hand held and a 4TH Gen IPad so next time maybe Chris CA you wont be so quick to jump in and try too shoot some one down as we are a long way away from you're "defiantly not before March" remark.

Please Excuse any spelling mistakes and also the lack in grammar and punctuation I'm very dyslexic.

As for the IPad STILL not working with the Audiobook format as it used too back in the good old days the only work round I've been able to successfully use is a long and tedious one and that is by use of the prog "Audacity" this lets you take all the chapters and stitch them together in to one long audio file it also allows you to add or remove details directly to the file i.e Author, genera, date as well as comments and a few other bits of info you might want to add.

This can take some time to do if there are 10's of chapters but after doing one or two books you will get faster it also allows you to very easily cut portions of the audio out so you don't have to listen to a sudden voice Stating for example "End of chapter two"............................"Chapter Three, Part One, The long kiss............" you can quite easily trim all the audio to suit you're preference.

These can then be saved in various formats then imported to iTunes and then at such a point you can add the book cover and in the Audiobook "get info" you can set it to Audiobook, spoken word, remember playback position and skip when shuffling this way the Audiobook will be moved to you're Audiobook folder and when played the book cover will be shown and when paused the Audio will again start from where it was originally paused.

The best part though of all this is that "Audacity" is completely free and comes jam packed full of stuff just for audio and also audio/video syncing that really for a free prog it's truly fantastic and is widely used be professionals as well as armatures like myself.

As always please excuse my lack of grammar, punctuation and spelling I'm very dyslexic.

Yes, I'm wondering what csayce's point of there being a new iPad sooner than you'd thought, was. Was it supposed to be that the problem would be solved soon with the rollout of the new device? I know he was hopeful that this would be addressed with OS 6. It hasn't been and it matters little to me if there is a new iPad being rolled out or not. Maybe it was aimed at the iPad 1 users to consider in case they were going to try to get a warranty replacement? I can't see Apple replacing anyone's iPad 1 with one of the new ones coming out, though. They have never been half that helpful with problems, IME. Maybe I should take back my IPad 2 on the grounds that one of my biggest uses of it was the map app and since that is no longer a capability, they owe me a brand new iPad. ? Pft.

I believe that if Apple is going to fix this audiobook issue it will be with the next update when the two new iPads are released for sale if not then I personally don't think there will be a patch release.

I'm sure by now all those who hung on to their first gen iPads will realise that there will not be a patch for the audiobook screwup as we are now already using an OS that isn't compatible with the first gen iPad.

I did say that those who were able too should have returned their first gen iPads if they were able too as like ppl who owned the iPhone found out they were quickly forgotten by Apple when it came to OS updates.

The only clear way I can see that audiobooks will play on the iPad with out installing some 3rd party app onto you're device is to convert the audiobook files as I have explained into one large audio file.

I have done this with most of my audiobooks now of which I have over 90 its a boring task but at least I can play them as I would any other audiobook as I did when the iPad supported play back yes I admit it would be nice to see each chapter but that is only a small loss when I am now able to play the audiobook pause it and then play some music then go back to the audiobook and have it play right from where it was paused plus it also shows the cover art and position along the audio time line all so using the prog that I recommended I am able to clean up the audiobook, trim it and also add various info as I wish so that's a big bonus from a prog which is free and doesn't take up much space in my storage.

I think now it really is time that you made up you're mind to use such a prog of you're choice to convert you're audiobooks or resign to what increasingly looks like that Apple doesn't really care that a key component of one of its biggest sellers isn't working and that they have had plenty of time to acknowledge the fault and patch it and having not done so then I believe they aren't going to do so any time soon.

But then who knows we might be surprised when the next two iPads come out ????

I have to say that if you live in the UK it is easier to return goods that are not functioning as they were when bought even out side the so called 12 warranty as a device bought has to function for a reasonable amount of time by law if that device is broken with a non reasonable time it is on the onus of the manufacture to repair or replace as it was down to Apple that the iPad no longer plays the audiobook correctly it is THEIR fault that the device no longer functions correctly and it is therefore down to them to repair or replace the device that is a consumer law in the UK if you live in the UK contact consumer advice and ask them for help ask that it be taken to Trading Standards you will see I'm right as I now own a gen3 iPad and had my gen1 iPad returned to Apple for a full refund inc extended warranty that I had just taken out that month.

As for the OS patch to fix the audiobook fault I was totaly lead to believe that OS6 would sort that out but as it hasn't I'm thinking that we might see a patch update when the two new iPads are released on sale (fingers crossed) now with regards to me stating before that there would be a new iPad out ready for the Christmas wish lists I thought that OS6 would also be released with the new iPad not expecting it to be released with the new iPhone I thought we would get the iPhone THEN the new iPad along with the new OS and every thing to be back up and running as it was with OS 4.3

Guess we were just unlucky or forgotten about take you're pick :-/

As always please excuse the lack of punctuation and grammar I'm very dyslexic. :(

It's really sad that this thread that I started a year ago is still alive. I'm sure that those of us who have sent in thoughtful and considerate comments to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html have been optimistic that Apple Corp would have heard and responded by iOS 6.0, but alas it hasn't happened.

I do notice that the Chapter artwork can be made to display by tapping the little album icon at the top of the Music app screen just to the right of the >> forward chapter button. I don't recall this in iOS 5.0 but it might have been there.

The Music app on iPhone (and I assume iPod Touch) still works pretty well with the exception of the kludge for setting a sleep timer in another app.

There remains an absolute and complete lack of any third-party alternative apps. I have looked at every single Audiobook app in the app store and every single app is restricted to downloading assets from their own / affiliated store. None of the apps allows for side-loading of content via iTunes, iExplorer or other.

So, for example, the perfectly servicable Audible app only allows assets to be downloaded from the Audible library. I can't add audiobooks that I have made myself that perfectly conform to audiobook format and work fine on the iPhone.

No other Audiobook app available in the App store provides such functionality as far as I can tell.

Please tell me I'm wrong and that there's an audiobook player that is agnostic about where the assets come from as long as they conform to the m4b format that has worked for years on iPods and iOS up until iOS 5.0 on iPad.

Given that there is evident interest in the functionality I am puzzled not only about Apple's reticence but also that no other vendor has offered an audiobook player that accepts assets via iTunes Dropbox, WebDav and so forth.

What's the issue? Is there something peculiar about the iPad that somehow precludes using it as a playback device for Audiobooks?

I suppose there will eventually be an iOS 6.1 and iOS 7.0 and so on but I see no evidence that there will ever be an iPad audiobook player from any where!!

I've writtent to Audible on several occasions regarding alternative loading of assets and (no surprise) gotten no response.

All that there seems to be is this thread (and maybe one or two others) that some of us keep alive from time to time.
