iOS 5 Music.app on iPad doesn't support audiobook chapters

The "new" Music.app on iOS 5 on iPad does not support viewing of Audiobook (.m4b / .aa) chapters and their titles. Nor does it provide for direct selection of chapters. This is a loss of functionality compared with the iPod.app on iOD 4.3 on iPad. The prior app provided a means of viewing the chapters and their titles and the direct selection of a desired chapter.

The current Music.app does provide for the user to tap the fast forward / backward buttons to skip to chapter marks but there is no display of the chapter title for a selection so there;s no useful way to know where one is in the Audiobook. Further, Audiobooks frequently contain 10s of chapters in a segment (usually limited to around 100 MB / segment (track if you prefer) by Audible).

The iPhone (and I presume iPod Touch) version of the Music.app retains the chapter viewing and selection functionality from previous iOS 4.3. Only the iPad version of the app has lost the functionality.

Without viewing of chapters and their titles and direct selection of chapters, Audiobooks in the Music.app are basically unusable on the iPad.

I filed a bug report on this as a regression - since it is functionality that was present (and still is on the iPhone) and is now lost.

===========CALL TO ARMS===========

I have tried another plan of attack for prodding Apple into a response about this matter of chapters and rewind.

I went to the local Apple store, made a Genius Bar appointment and described my concerns to the Genius that took my case. I described my unhappiness and disappointment. I told him I knew this was not the usual "break fix" call, but was desparately seeking a way to contact someone at Apple to see if I could escalate my concerns. He said he had no names for anyone at Apple, but suggested he could issue a RTA, a "Request for Technical Assistance."

Perhaps if all of us who live within driving distance of an Apple store could do this, someone at Apple who cares might see these and at least communicate future plans or past reasons for this problem.

Each request includes the customer's (my) email address, so we can only do it once. Also, remember to speak with the tech respectfully, with a pleading manner. He (or she) did not break our iPads and may be help on our path to resolution. We want them to be friendly to our cause.

That's a Great idea!! I am currently in a remote part of the planet with no access to a Genius Bar unfortunately; however, all those who are able to should definitely take the time to get an RTA generated for this issue. I remain optimistic that Apple engineering must have some staff dealing with this issue because it is so horrible - it makes the iPad look like the RIM Playbook w/o email.

People could also use expresslane.apple.com to try and file an incident if their iPad is under extended care of if they want to pay for an incident.

Well just to let every one know I was going to just keep sending my iPad back and forth to apple as a protest till they fix the audiobook problem but after spending about an hour with an apple care customer service person on the phone and he agreed that there is no work around for this issue and apple doesn't seem to be acknowledging the fact and that there is no update in the pipe line to be released I have now exercised my consumer rights and I'm now sending my iPad back to apple for a complete refund of the price plus interest plus the refund of the £69 I was charged for the extended apple care that I took out with them just two months ago.

So now I leave this open topic and what you choose to do now either keep returning you're iPads, demand a refund as the iPad is no longer fit for purpose under the original contract you bought it or if you choose to sit and wait it out is now you're choice as for me I'm going to buy an android tablet that will at least play flash and as far as I'm aware has no problems playing audio books.

I wish you all the very best and I hope you have a good new years eve.

Cheers.

Did the customer service person indicate that Apple will actually refund the price plus interest plus the extended care cost? That's a pretty good deal if they're going to actually follow through with it.

I continue to be puzzled by the corporate arrogance. Assuming that the cost of the team to develop a credible iPad Music app including Q/A and product management is around $1,000,000 then apparently the calculus must be that the cost in goodwill and so forth is much less than that - in other words there's only say maybe $250,000 worth of annoyed customers == 350 - 500 customers world-wide.

I wonder though how much was spent in the first place to create and ship crap.

Dec 27, 2011 8:40 AM in response to xristy

I had the apple care person I spoke too to send an email confirming these refunds as I would not allow him to hang up until I received the email and looked it over which is all good if you are in the uk a massive amount of people don't actually know that infant you have up to FIVE years to return any product non perishable products not included the law states that any product up to six months after the date of recept can be returned at no cost to the consumer except were return delivery is involved a product can be returned with in and up to ONE year if the product is faulty and it is up to the seller to prove that the product was not faulty a product can be return up to a maximum of FIVE years but the costumer then has to prove that the product is faulty if you read the consumer rights the long distance sales act and trading laws it's amazing what rights you and I as consumers have that we know little of and also how little the customer service people on the phone or over the desk know just look them up if you're in the UK at gov.org they are quite long but so very much worth the read.

This is why and how I have got a FULL refund of every thing that I bought from apple (Less the money I pad for apps that only work with the iPad and not the iphon4) which I don't mind as its only a small amount compared to the 64gig wifi 3G price of the iPad I'm sending back.

All because of the basic fact that the iPad is now not the product I bought and was altered with out my consent and therefore not fit for purpose as advertised by apple in one of their adverts where they show an audiobook being played.

And now no longer fits that discription.

Here's a link that's also quite interesting about apples lack of consumer rights in Italy and how they have just been fined $1.2m for it.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-16339651

Naughty apple bad apple making more money out of ppl selling them AppleCare protection plans while the devices they bought were still under guarantee by the Italian consumer rights of TWO years not ONE year as in other parts of the world so that the plan was actually overlapping the guarantee that the Italians legally have so in effect paying for a service they already had hmmmm apple just trying to get away with some thing else as far as I'm concerned Apple are no longer the ppls chapian they are worse than Microsoft :(

Dec 27, 2011 9:04 AM in response to xristy

I know I'm actually sorry I don't know the rulings of consumer rights for ppl in the USA you can't even put a class act against apple to sue them now as it was judged about three months back that no major company can have class acts brought against them any more :(( still if I was you now that this has happened in Italy jump on the back of this info and contact a major news corp or you're local news publisher and post a story about this problem with the iPad since the upgrade and the fact that apple advertised the iPad playing an audiobook and that apple does will not accept the fact that there is a problem and that there is no help be given I'm sure the press would love another story about apple do this and ride the wave ;)

If anyone else is experiencing this issue, please post here. I've been a devote Apple fanboy since the origional iPhone and I love this company but we can't allow our plight to be ignored and burried. Please take the time to log in and post as sheer numbers are the only way Apple will listen and restore the features they've wantonly abandoned.

Lets not let this be forgotten until it's fixed!

This is just terrible, I thought the problem was with th efirst audiobook I downlaoded, but then I downloaded another one, that I had downloaded before (but had failed to transfer to my iTunes and therefore had LOST after a frozen iPhone), I noticed that th eproblem was with iPad, as my iPhone did feauture the chapters. Even on th eIphone, it shows chapters, but you can't read the whole titles of chapters because they're usually too long.

Anyway: a serious request to Apple to fix this, this should be easy!

The Audible App is AGAIN the best way to listen to audiobooks on iPad.

All the original features for playing audiobooks that the old iPod App had and many more wonderful functions have been restored to the Audible App. The only thing they apparently were not allowed to restore is the former ability to buy Audible audiobooks right from the Audible App. Otherwise this wonderful App is back to its former greatness. It is one of the best designed Apps around and actually even better than the old iPod App now the new Music App especially with all the features removed leaving it only with Play, Stop, Volume and scrubbing — its pretty awful… as everyone here has noted since October.

Of course and unfortunately this means you need an Audible account to use the App but if you do have one I suggest you download the Audible App and begin listening to your audiobooks on your iPad (or iPhone) with Chapters, Bookmarks, customizable Go Back Button (10, 20, 30, 60, 90 seconds), selectable Narration Speeds, Sleep Timer, Twitter, FB and eMail Sharing and the option of a "Button Free" screen with all functions tap or swipe-able. Listen up Apple – this App rocks!

Jan 9, 2012 7:07 PM in response to Rikki88

Rikki88: What version of Audible app for iPad are you talking about? I have version 1.7.2 and am running iOS 5.0.1 (9A405). The App Store seems to think this is the latest version of the Audible app available for iPad.

The 1.7.2 version of Audible app does NOT support Chapter marks for audiobooks in the user's "iPod Library". Chapter marks are only supported for audiobooks in "My Library".

This is nothing new as far as I can see and has been discussed at length earlier in this thread.

The issue was and as near as I can tell - unless iOS 5.1 changes something - still is that Apple does not provide access to chapterization via the published APIs and hence no developers can access the chapter information in media contained in the shared "iPod Library" area.

Further, Apple has unilaterally removed the functionality of the prior iPod app thus severly degrading the fitness of the iPad for various applications as has been described in numerous posts in this thread. This is tantamount to a manufacturer selling a claw hammer and then overnight causing the claw part to disappear leaving the user with no recourse.

I have the Audible App v.1.7.2 (104) on my iPad.

In the Audible App:

Go to the Categories heading and select My Library (not iPod Library) then you can listen to your audiobooks with Chapters and all the other features. Under the My Library heading select Downloaded - if you have not downloaded any books then go to the Not Downloaded heading and select one of the titles from your Audible Online Library; once downloaded you can listen to your audiobook in the App with all the features I listed fully functional including Chapters. You are correct that if you try to listen to your audiobooks listed under the iPod Library heading (in the Audible App) then the audiobook will not show Chapters however it does retain all the other features I listed.

I find downloading to the Audible App is very fast and frankly I can see no advantage to listening to my audiobooks on iPad using the Apple Music App, to the contrary, especially since there are no Chapters or other features.

If you need further instructions for using the Audible App there is a video tutorial as well as a written tutorial with screen grabs on the Audible site. Granted it is not the perfect solution we all seek — namely fixing the Music App by restoring all the audiobook listening features of the previous iPod App but at this point, given the silence from Apple, I don't have much faith in a solution anytime soon – if ever.
