Why does my iOS5 iPad 2 lag / lagging while in mirroring mode?

I just updated my iPad 2, with the latest iOS5 Update, but am having issues with mirroring... There is such a huge delay / lag, that it makes it almost impossible to play games while using it! I also updated my Apple TV, figuring it needed an update too. So, on top of the lag issue, the picture quality is so bad! I can hardly read what's on the screen right now, while typing. Plus, the screen is just a small box, while in 16 x 9 mode. Then, when you stretch the screen to wide display, it cuts off a bit of the bottom. Never did that with the AV Adapter... I really hope Apple fixes this, since it's such an important selling point.

Issues:

1) Very bad lagging.

2) Poor picture quality.

3) Very small screen, in 16x9 mode.

4) Setting TV to Wide Screen cuts off a bottom portion of the iPad 2.

Is anyone else experiencing these mirroring issues as well?

Ha, welcome highdefstuff, course I know who you are! Interesting results you're seeing, with your ATV wired to Ethernet and iPad only 8 feet from the Linksys WiFi you see lag up to 30 freakin' seconds...crazy. Out of curiosity, can you take your ATV off Ethernet and use WiFi like your iPad and see if the lag is better/worse? I'm wondering if this has something to do with the ATV having trouble keeping the 'mirroring traffic' synced up.

Sorry took me so long to post my findings. (you know the meds zonk me out though) Well I set the ATV to wifi and palyed the same game on the iPad and if there was any less lag then when it was wired it was of such a small amount thta it was unmesureable.

I even went back to wired connection and since my gigabyte switch is manageable I set up a trunk group and repeated tha same events on the iPad again and it seemed this time there was a slight (very slight) improvement in the playablity of the game but still had random disconnects and lag between the two devices to the point that there were to different game backgrounds showing on the two devices. I still can not believe that Apple's Quality Control let this get out the door with this issue being as bad as it is. I am able to purchase a movie or a episode that is coming from Apple and not my library and I am able to start playing the movie the very instant Ipurchase the movie and it plays smoothe as can be and never pauses or catches up to the stream. Is this the same for you?

I had Buritos yesterday. Yum.

You want me to send you some?

Who the heck knows at this point then, mirroring seems hardly ready for prime time. You have a completely optimized setup with basically line of sight to the WiFi gateway and still unusable due to lag whether g or n, wired or wireless. In my case I continue to have inexplicably horrible performance in my upstairs room but acceptable and usable in the downstairs setup. Of course all the while every OTHER function of the ATV works wonderfully upstairs (Netflix et al, streaming videos from my iTunes library, etc).

I experienced an extreme video lag when using airplay mirroring on my Ipad2 (i.e. nearly 2 minutes before first image would even show up on the TV, audio was immediate). Both the Ipad and AppleTV were set up on the 5GHZ band of my dual-band router (linksys 3200) so on a whim I set the AppleTV up to use the 2.4GHZ band and now mirroring works perfectly with almost no perceptiple lag. Both Apple TV and the Ipad work well on the 5.0GHZ band other than with airplay. Go figure?

I'm noticing something else here too. Basically my iPad 2 starts to lose download bandwidth exponentially faster than my iPhone4 as distance/barriers get in the way of the signal (walls, doors, floors etc). In my upstairs room where mirroring is unusable, side by side my iPhone 4 clocks around 14 Mb down while my iPad 2 is around 2! If I take my iPad 2 downstairs next to the WAP the download jumps up to 14-15 Mb. Little wonder mirroring doesn't work upstairs but is quite good downstairs. Did some googling and people have been complaining about WiFi download speeds since iPad 1 so I guess this is just a design flaw with the iPad, shame.

it's sad cause there was a point in time where I had it right next to it and I mean right next to it (right there the router) and I still had lag from time to time and yes I unplug the wireless phones in my house all the things that was said but I think it needs a update to run games better well more like everything better.

So I have a wireless n router that handles 50 ipads at once with no problem.

I set up the apple tv and airplayed SlingPlayer with no problem. Mirroring didnt work for the entire screen of the Apple tv, so I updated the apple tv software. Now I cannot even stream SlingPlayer, there is a frozen frame about 1 minute after I go into air display, then a minute later it refreshes to another frozen frame. I would have agreed this was a network issue, if it wasnt streaming live tv prior to the apple tv update. Any ideas?

Thanks,

-Josh

Thanks so much for your post. I'm tech savey but my new apple tv has been driving me nuts. The lag between the ipad 2 and atv was huge 1min plus and i couldn't figure out why. Then i read your post.

I went into my router settings and changed the 2.4ghz id name and left the 5.0 the same.

changed the ipad2 wi-fi to that network.

rebooted atv and resetup including the new network for the 2.4 and **** ya now the ipad interfaces with atv awesome.

thanks.

I've had the same issues described by everyone else (iPad2, AppleTV2, WiFi connection to AppleTV). However, the weirdest thing happened: When I first installed it, I had the mirroring lag. Later I reset/restored the AppleTV setup and shazzam--it worked perfectly and seamlessly, even with three or four iPhones sharing my WiFi! Racing games, flight simulators, net surfing, email...everything worked perfectly!!! Then, a few days later, the mirroring lag returned. I've tried everything to reproduce my earlier success, plus rebooted my router, reinstalled its software, you name it...I've tried it. Nothing has brought back the seamless performance I enjoyed for one or two days. Any ideas on what might have caused that phenomenon?

Why does my iOS5 iPad 2 lag / lagging while in mirroring mode?
