I have my ipad updated and set it to use my email for the imessage in my iPad
then, I realized that I cannot type "@" in the imessage in iPhone (therefore, cannot type mail address)
how to do send an imessage from iPhone to iPad?

IF they are registered with message app, they won't be in red and you will be able to send a message.
If they are in red, they aren't registered. the send button will be grayed.
They need to register, too
you are talking about from iPad to iPhone,
but how about iPhone to iPad?
when you do that on iPhone, there will not be any email listing under the contact, only phone number.
I find if you copy and paste the email address from the address book app.
then you can message from iPhone to iPad, but there got to be a better way
I am having the same problem. The email addresses for my contacts do not appear on the iPhone, they do appear on the iPad. So if I want to imessage my wife from my iPhone I only get the option to send to her email address, if I do it from my iPad I get her email.
The only way that I have found so far is to go into my Contacts and at the very bottom select Send Message, then I can select her email.
For some reason the @ is missing since when I select the 123 button it gives me the dial keyboard instead of the special characters keyboard.
I find out that if you turn on the MMS in the preference, then you will see the "@" in the soft keyboard

It's the SMS/MMS option at the very bottom if anyone else has this issue.
For some reason I dont have an option to turn the MMS on. All I have got under SMS/MMS is 'Show subject field' and 'Character count'. Any clue for this???

And select my name and it give me the option to

When I do this what I get in the address line in imessage is my email, but without "@" and "." signs...
What I did was open contacts then add contact
Added my name then added my email associated
With my I tunes account in the email slot
And saved. Then when I sent a I message to my
I pad I opened messages then hit big
Plus at top right selected my name in contacts
That I added my email to and select
That email just like I would a phone number
And typed the message and send it went to my I pad

what i did was..i add "+(country code)" followed by the phone number while composing a new message, if that person is using ios5 and imessage enabled, the 'send' tab will turns to blue automatically.

hey i had the same problem with MMS then i called my service provider and they gave me instructions to get it fixed but i think mostly hey fix it for you but now mine works really well
