Try this :
1. Go to the Settings App.
2. Tap on Wi-Fi
3. Your chosen network will be ticked. Tap on its white arrow over a blue circle button to its right
4. Tap on DNS
5. Replace the current information with 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4
6. Try visiting a website with Safari to see if this works
7. Try registering iMessage / FaceTime
I've been so frustated with this problem also. I found this solution and it finally worked for me 🙂
Just tried it but still cant activate it...
having the same issue.. 'Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again'.. tried many times..
I was having a similar problem. After I changed my Apple ID account's password, it iMessage and FaceTime suddently had my iTunes account added. My old password didn't conform to the new convention (at least two letters, one upper case and one lower).
I think it's more likely that Apple's servers are simply overloaded with the traffic. There are several million people all hitting them at the same time. This scenario is playing out in other countries as well. I have the same problems with iMessage but we'll just have to wait I suppose.

When I try to activate with my me.com email, it says "Unable to verify email because it is already in use". I did my switch to iCloud, any ideas?
I had the same problem because the email address that I wanted to use was associated with my AppleID account.
I'm having the same issue on my iPad. I get through the first imessage setup screen no problem with my mac.com Apple ID, ten it asks what email to use, I enter the same one, and I get the same message "unable to verify email because it's already in use". arghhhhh! It's working just fine on my iPhone 3Gs. Have been texting all day...
I had that too. I wanted to use my me.com account, but after getting that msg, I switched it to another email. Then it worked.
On my iPad, changing me AppliID password faxed things. On my wife's, choosing another account worked.
Since you made the change to a different email address or account does it synch the conversations between the devices?
After I changed my password, and was able to register my AppleID, iMessage messages go to both my iPad and iPhone (the conversations are kept in sync). Since my wife has a different AppleID for iMessage her iPad gets her own messages.

Finally!!!!! after changing my password I had to do that of changing the DNS in WiFi settings and then.... wow!!!! Automatically there it was!!!!! activated!!!!! 😀
