Emoji (Emoticons) iOS5/iPhone 4 NOT working...

Hi, I have the exact same problem as you...just wondering if you ever figured out what was wrong???

The problems are caused by recent changes in the encoding standards for emoji. They should disappear when everyone upgrades to the new official Unicode standard published in October of 2010.

hi.. im having the same problem here..

i have an iPhone 4S (iOS 5.0.1), and as we all know, the emoji is included already.. on the other hand, my bf is using iPhone3G (iOS 3.1.3) and does not have the emoji, so he downloaded an emoji app and installed it.

the thing is, when i send him a text msg/sms WITH emoji, he does NOT receive anything.. but WITHOUT emoji, he could receive my text/sms..

Note: BUT, there was this time that he received my text/sms with the emoji..but that only happened ONCE. From then on, it didn't happen again.

Please HELP!! 😢

I doubt there is anything you can do other than get your bf to start using a phone that can run iOS 5.

Yes, i guess that's the only thing we can do. He's waiting for the iPhone 5.. But will the latest versions of emoji can help?

We both have iP4's w/5.01 I can send to anyone, no prob, if anyone with a 4 sends to me a txt w/emogi, I don't receive Any MSG at all (dissapears into space), but seems to work with a jail broken 4 and the 4s's. Apple and my local carrier have been totally useless. Even was given a reman phone with just my sim card in it. Still didn't work. Been like this since last June. Worked for first month. Junk

To me the question is why did apple change the encoding and why don't they just change them back

Would be nice to be able to use emoji again.....

They UPDATED it to a newer encoding. I doubt they will ever downgrade something like this. Better yet, it entices people to upgrade to a newer unit, and generates them more revenue

It's sad that Apple pushes a new "format" to make others "suffer" for not receiving messages properly.😟

To keep an iPhone as "the best" phone out there, it should accomodate communication with others better than any other devices. I dropped my Android in favor for an iPhone 4S ...

- loosing smileys,

- loosing 3G (T-mobile user since AT&T has zero coverage here),

- loosing good reception (my Android has reception in the entire house - my iPhone keeps loosing connection),

- loosing the fact that my phone automatically tries to resend messages when they fail (why do I have to tap the "Try Again" button?),

- loosing good working MMS (picture messaging - can be fixed but how is editing a plist user friendly?) ...

Did I mention FaceTime incompatibility, or the lack of support by iMessage for non-Apple recipients (I'm using WhatsApp now to accomodate non-Apple recipients! Sick!)?

Don't get me wrong;

I still love my iPhone, my iPad, my MacBook Pro, and my MacPro, ... but it becomes VERY hard to explain to other people why they should even consider switching from say Android or BlackBerry to iPhone ...

Apple: please consider that being able to message (text, MMS, or video!) the rest of the world without cumbersome work-arounds is part of being simple and userfriendly! Please fix this issue.

They don't show up in Facebook with an iPad; whether from the keyboard or a paste from an email (where they work). They show up and disappear with a refresh. I wonder what kind of encoding Facebook uses.

This answer is likely way to late, but since I just had a similar problem, you may be interested in the workaround I found using the SMS Smileys FREE app (loaded from the App store) instead of the Apple iOS Messages standard app.

A bit cumbersome, but it works for me.

the regular EMOJI for me works fine.
"MyEmoji creator" - does not.
It said FREE but is not, charged me 0.99 - not so much but it worked only day one.

It allows 3 faces if you want more, you must pay for the extra templates.

Those 3, worked yesterday. Now I tried ALL solutions mentioned and does not work.
