Hi, I am having the same problem with ringtones not going on to iphone. They show in iTunes under ringtones and under the ringtones tab. I have synced and unticked all and added them all again and synced done this several times and out of my 2 ringtones the oldest goes on to the phone (both of which were bought off iTunes). I have ran diagnostics and still nothing. Sometimes a message comes up on the iPhone after syncing saying 1 item could not be synced please see iTunes. When I go to ringtones under the iPhone on the left hand side bar the two ringtones are there but the one that won't sync has like a sync symbol on the left hand side and the name is grey not black like other tone. Hope this makes sense and someone can help me as I am loosing patience with iPhone and iTunes. Oh and I recently upgraded from iPhone 3gs to iPhone 4s.

I have not read the entire thread so I don't know if someone suggested this already but my solution was to first add the ringtone to the iTunes library.

Up to that point the ringtones showed up as greyed out under my device. I could uncheck/sync/check/sync but that didn't help. So I removed the greyed out ringtones from my iPhone, added the ringtones to my iTunes library then dragged them from the library to the device. Then they showed up.

I just got of the phone with Apple support-if none of the previous works for you ( it did not work for me) then with your phone open in itunes, go to your ringtone icon in the library and then drag and drop each ringtone on your device. It should say updating... And vuola(sp?)

Very frustrating...they cant seem to make thing obvious-hope this works for you, it worked for me!

In addition to the ringtones not syncing i had trouble with my songs not syncing either, thought i figured that out ( using the auto fill in music under the device) but now im finding that not all the songs in the albums made it over, so im having to drag and drop those also....grrr... Again, beyond frustrating..( they were all checked and all checked were supposed to sync)

For those of you that have the grey ringtone problems this is what worked for me. Check the ringtones by going to "sounds" in your phone (actual phone not itunes) and click on the ones that are grey in itunes, they should be there but not play on your phone. If they are like that then hopefully this should work. Delete all of them from you phone and itunes.

All I had to do was shorten the playback time to under 30 sec. I make mine off phonezoo and just put the time 29.9 and it worked. Hopefully this helps and works for you

This was done after syncing, updating, respringing, remaking ringtones, everything you could do and still no dice.

Went through this nightmare with my wife's iPhone.

Copies of 2 ringtones, purchased from iTunes, would not sync from Macbook Air(Lion) to iPhone 4S (latest iOS). Tried dragging to iPhone folders on desktop, unsyncing-syncing, resetting iPhone-nothing worked.

Finally, made a copy of each ringtone. Deleted from iPhone iTunes ringtones folder 2 "grayed-out" copies of the ringtones that were not syncing and were apparently in some sort of syncing "limbo". Placed the 2 "copies" of the ringtones into the iTunes "tones" folder on the Macbook Air, then synced. This finally resulted in a transfer after a considrable period of wasted time.

In the Android world, USB mass storage setting saves you from this grief.

Please help. I beg of you! In short I have:

- turned WiFi syncing off

- toggled the correct sync boxes over and over and over again

- custom ringtones are under 38 seconds

- the Artist information is filled in

- removed everything to an external Library, resynced then rebooted everything. Imported back and attempted to restock. Three times.

Only some tones transfer (custom and purchased) but I can't figure out why some do and others don't except that the ones that do are from my first set up while later add-ins don't.

There isn't some kind of maximum, is there? And no, I have barely anything loaded onto the device.

Been at it for days and am sooooooooo frustrated. What have I missed doing?

Just when I think I have a handle on this whole iTunes business, something craps out.

PS: when syncing, it says the tone is transferring but I can't see it in the list and it's not in the Music folder either.
