iphone battery dead after ios 5 update

After a lengthy ios5 update my phone was at 100% charge so I didn't charge it overnight as I normally do. In the morning the phone was so dead that I had to plug in the charger to get it to respond. Not sure why it would be completely dead after 8 hours of standby, in Edge mode to boot? Also I am missing purchased ringtones though they are still in iTunes. Any help is appreciated.

I can confirm this too.

I had a perfect 3gs with 2 exchange accounts, 1 gmail, 1 hotmail, 1 yahoo and the battery used to work for 3 days with no issues. I dont receive normal amount of emails on any of the account.

After I upgraded to ios5, every thing was okay, because I there was nothing configured.

The moment I configured my exchange account, boom!

Battery started going down.

8 am it was at 74%

9 am it was at 56%

10 am it was at 32%

and of course the moment i removed exchange,

at 5 pm it was still at 31%

So I can guarantee this is related to some bug in the mail or cloud or notifications.

Even though I did not receive ANY email today.

I even removed the association of my phone on my exchange server, rebooted my exchange front end server too (yes i am the admin for that server).

Still the same.

I am simply going to walk into the apple store and tell them that I want my old OS back.

I finally solved this issue on my iphone 4. I had tried everything in this discussion. I also restored my phone back to factory condition (which interestingly enough leave ios 5 on the phone). Nothing worked. Last night, I turned off all notifications. I tapped settings, notifications, and then turned off each app listed in the "In Notification Center" section. I turned my phone off. Today, I turned the phone on and in 3 hours, I still have 97% battery life. I had been losing about 7% per hour since the upgrade. I may try to turn notifications back on one at a time as I'd like to be to be able to use them for some things.

Turning off notifications is kind of defeating the purpose of having a smartphone. So is turning off GPS.

There do seem to be ample #s of people who have been able to upgrade to iOS5 and have normal battery life *WITH* not just notifications turned on, but also GPS *and* all the new iCloud features.

I haven't really seen any obvious pattern here. Some people claim to have found an incompatibility between iCloud and some other service such as mobileme or microsoft exchange. Since I have never had mobileme nor do I ever use my phone for email, I can't benefit from the changes they've made.

The folks at the apple store seem to think the only solution is to turn off practically everything that makes the iphone a smartphone: gps, notifications, etc. Since most people don't have to do that *AND* have normal battery life, that strikes me as a lack of acknowledgement on Apple's part that a certain % of their phones have an issue with iOS5.

Whether this is due to a hardware flaw in a % of the phones manufactured, or due to some "grunge" that has accumulated in the OS since the phone was first set up, is hard to know. But asking some of us to turn off some of the most important features of the phone is NOT a reasonable solution.

I was very surprised when an Apple tech called me on Saturday after seeing one of my posts related to this issue. No resolution yet, but Apple asked all kinds of questions and we agreed that I would test by shutting off iCloud first and then my e-mail accounts and they will call back in the week.

After some more testing, it seems like when I have Mobile Iron / Corp e-mail on, my drain rate is an average of 16% per hour (at the high end, it was draining at 26% per hour)

Without the corp e-mail, the drain rate is about 7% per hour.

The major problem here is that this drain was never this high pre the upgrade to ios5, so I can not blame my corp mail account just yet, but this is realy frustrating as the phone is nothing more then a brick, I expect all things to work for at least a regular 8-10 hour business day.

I am not a apple fan at all, but the fact that someboady from Apple called me based on my posts here on this forum has given me some hope, great to experience customer service and a real sense of care from them, cudo Apple.....

I don't know if this is the right solution but I seemed to be able to solve the battery issue.

I deleted my mobileme account on my iphone 4. Shut the phone down. Clear the iCloud. Add the iCloud back (with the mobileme account information that I have). So far I had standby time of 5.5 hours with 71% battery life left.

I think my mobileme account was trying to access the mobileme server while the iCloud account is also trying to access the same information or server... Don't really know how to explain it. But it worth a try!

If you don't use the stock part of your phone you should remove all the tickers so it wont update im not sure how often it updates but it seemed to be alot after i deleted all the default stuff they had put back in it from upgrade to ios5 my net trafic from my idle phone dropped a bit.

Also the Find My Iphone although a really nice option can also wear on battery life

that and disableing icloud bookmarks and photo stream is all I have had to do to get batterly life back to almost what it was like pre ios5

I think the problem is caused by exchange account reminders.

I made several tests but the following procedure did the trick:

- I removed my corporate exchange account and then shutdown the phone (pressing home + standby)

- after boot, i added my corporate account without enabling reminders

After that battery usage was normal.

Hope it helps.
