iphone battery dead after ios 5 update

After a lengthy ios5 update my phone was at 100% charge so I didn't charge it overnight as I normally do. In the morning the phone was so dead that I had to plug in the charger to get it to respond. Not sure why it would be completely dead after 8 hours of standby, in Edge mode to boot? Also I am missing purchased ringtones though they are still in iTunes. Any help is appreciated.

This is off the topic.

But I am adding this information just to tell you how apple can send us a patch.

Sometime back iphones had similar exchange related issue.

I dont think it was battery related.

But I clearly remember that after applying the following patch, things had worked for me.

Read more at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3398

As you can see, APPLE does have a way to create temporary patches.

I am sure to fix this issue, they can quickly release a similar type of a patch, or better yet, push the patch to us.

Attention Apple Engineers and Support Staff, including about 1000+ Genii around the globe:

We need an app that shows what features of iOS 5 are drawing battery power over time, such as, by minute, hours, day, or until that 3 GS shuts down (with a graph.)

Why keep us guessing by turning off some things, everything, iCloud, whatever, and then hoping it's not dead in the morning. If Apple is bragging about iOS 5 (and I really like it), how about assisting millions of users by lettings us know how to properly operate the device without drain, distress and disgust.

This free app should be simple to create, or in the alternative, give us a current meter for the battery and we will learn by using our phones what programs "suck" the battery or in the alternative, just what programs suck...Yea!

So, I was getting some battery drain from iPhone 4 16GB with AT&T after updating to iOS 5 and wiping my phone entirely.

I have a Google Sync (Exchange) account, iCloud, and numerous applications that support push notifications.

As of a few days ago, after I completely setup everything in my phone, I noticed a relentless battery drain that would not stop regardless of anything I did.

I did the following things:

1. Turned off Bluetooth. (Why it was on after iOS 5 update, I don't know)

2. Turned off Location Services for applications I didn't need

3. Removed iCloud completely

4. Uninstalled apps that I didn't need

5. Set my Exchange account from Push to Manual (turned off Push support)

6. Selectively turned off Notification Center for applications that aren't necessary to push updates to my phone

7. Turned off most advanced Location Services features such at Time Zone lookup

None of that resulted in any improvement. Today, while looking online, I came across these two new suggestions:

1. Turn off Set Date, Time Automatically from the Date & Time section

2. Remove and reinstall Exchange account

I also went to the Advanced portion of my Exchange account and set fetching to manual. I literally now have a crippled phone with a battery issue that doesn't go away. My phone was working fine before iOS 5. Even on the beta I wasn't getting these issues. What is going on? This is unacceptable. I switched from my Android device and compromised on some features just to get a much better battery life and a pretty interface. With this horrible battery, I don't even see a reason to stay with Apple. I'm probably going to switch back to Android if this isn't fixed soon. I'm extremely displeased.

Following is simply me THINKING OUT LOUD:

I use wi-fi at my work on my iphone.

I expect the iphone to NOT use my 3G connection at all.

My investigation on the exchange server side logs tells me that my iphone is making 2 connections to the front end exchange server, one using 3G and one using wi-fi.

I am just thinking out loud: Is that ANOTHER reason for the drain on my specific IPHONE?

Or is it that exchange is using 3G like crazy causing a battery drain.

Also iphone system log which can seen through an app called "system status" (probably was a paid app) shows too many of these WARNING lines :

usereventagent [12]

unable to cancel system wake for 2011-10-18 15:48:11 -0400

IOPMCancelScheduledPowerEvent(() returned 0xe00002c2

Wondering what that is....

I am into production support.

I dont get too many emails, but yes its extremely critical for me to have PUSH SYNC, calendar etc.

So yes this bug is troubling me too, a lot.

But I recommend we all give apple some time to analyze, accept, test this issue.

4S users are also complaining about this, so this is a real known issue, I am sure they know.

I hope they are reading this forum.

LOL

I'd feel a lot more comfortable if Apple would at least say "we are aware of the problem, are working on a solution, and hope to issue a patch in the near future to fix the glitch." As long as they are silent and until we know they are working on it, I think we need to keep raising the issue. I've seen a few blogs, etc, mention the problem, which is a good thing.

Since deleting the iCloud email account, and all my other email accounts, and resetting network connections I have good battery life. I have reinstalled Gmail(exchange) and a Yahoo account. I have also re-enabled Push, and fetching every 30 minutes. My battery life is back to normal, it was down to 58% at noon since being fully charged at 5pm the day before. I also streamed a 45min episode via netflix on that usage.

i took my phone in and they tested the battery life and said it was fine. so they told me to restore my iphone 4 and set it up as new because it means the ios 5 software didnt install correctly over the ios 4. i have everything enabled except for the location for the weather and my battery is doing just fine like before the update. i have push enabled as well. so if youre still having troubles, try restoring and setting up as new. it worked for me.

This is not just an upgrade issue though. My wife's brand new iphone4 is also draining battery life very quickly, 5 percent every 15 minutes when she is using it for texting and so on. wfii, bluetooth turned off, most notifications turned off execept weather and gmail. turning everything off is not really a solution to me, and it does not seem to really help much anyways, it still drains quickly. Hopefully apple fixes this as it seems to be an ios5 issue. Also, she does not have exchange set up, just gmail which they helped her set up at the store. So Im not so sure its JUST an ms exchange issue.

Update on the exchange Calendar issue - with the Calendar items removed from notification center, I managed to go from 7AM to 7PM with 60% battery remaining. Turned back on the Calendar option in notification center and had 10% drain in 30 mins. Removed the Calendar notification and drained only 1% in 30 mins. Back on - 10% in 30 mins - seems like pretty conclusive proof that iOS has issues with Exchange Calendar in Notifications.

Does anyone have an Exchange account syncing a Calendar with these enabled in Notifications, and not have a battery issue?

Not to say this is the only cause of battery drain, but I have all other location based systems on, iCloud is on (sans Documents) and I would say the battery drain is the same as my old iPhone4 on iOS4.

Well, I have an Exchange account syncing a calendar, with calendar Notifications enabled. BUT. I don't really USE the calendar. If I get a chance later I will test adding a calendar event and see if that happens to boost the battery use. But mine had battery drain before, and cancelling that function was NOT what solved it.

I have an Exchange account with Push working just fine at the moment, and my battery issue has gone away. This is on upgraded iPhone 4. I think there are eithe rmultiple possibilities for causes or we haven't quite isolated it yet. The one thing I turned off on Exchange syncing was Reminders, not Calendar. Reminders is a new syncing option or a renaming of an old option, and it will be set on after upgrading even on an existing account where it might have been off.

I do have everything in iCloud off except Find My iPhone. I suspect the issue is there instead. If I get a chance I will test enabling some of these one by one to see if it comes back. I'm thinking my issue went away when I disabled Documents and Data in iCloud.

I do have Wi-Fi OFF at the moment. That is a typical setting for me, but not sure if that may be the culprit. Will test and report back.

Also make sure you get a phone power cycle in there after changing some of these settings. Turn it off and turn it on. I still believe this may have made a difference, unless you're certain you've done this with your latest settings in force.
