Mail is rejecting user name and/or password

I'm using Lion and have updated to the new Lion, new iTunes, new iPhoto, etc. I've installed IOS5 on my iPad and iPhone. I am trying to use "mail", on my MBP and my password is being rejected. (Me.com is accepting it!) My iPad is telling me "CANNOT GET MAIL The user name or password for "xxxxx@me.com is incorrect." me.com is not able to load all my mail.

In "mail" preferences > accounts>email address, it lists BOTH my old mac.com and me.com addresses, seperated by a comma (user names are the same).

Is this an Apple bug that will be fixed (soon, I hope) or do I need to do the "fix:?

Yes, it's MobileMe all over again. I feel confident that the issues will be resolved soon. Right now there are a ton of people looking to join or migrate to iCloud. iCloud servers have to be working overtime. When the rush dies down, we should be okay. Right now, about half the time my password is accepted and the other time, it's rejected. Typing it in the little dialog box is useless. The password is already saved in your keychain.

I just spent an hour on hold to finally chat with someone at Apple about it. I was told that basically, they're getting hammered with the rollout and that they're expecting service to smooth out in the next day or so. Also, there is no way for me to go back to my old MobileMe account now that I've upgraded it to and iCloud account. Basically I was told to shut up, suck it up and wait. I think that I'm pretty much done dealing with Apple. This may be a minor inconvenience to some, but it's compounding a series of issues that I've been having with the company and their service. I'd be hard pressed to buy more hardware from them after the crap I've had to deal with over the last few years.

I can't believe all the complaining that people do over a minor and expected snag. I had the same issue and came on here to find an explanation. Now that I know what it is, it's simply a matter of being slightly inconvenienced and will just require a little patience. There are going to be glitches when there is a change of this magnitude. It always amazes me how we have become a country of whiners who somehow feel a sense of entitlement for anything that doesn't go exactly they way we want. This is not directed at anyone person in particular, but there are several people on here who make it such a big deal, it's just sad. If your e-mail access is that freaking important, you probably shouldn't have merged to iCloud on the 1st day it was made public.

Just because there is suffering in the world doesn't mean I can't be annoyed when my email doesn't work. Apple put out a product. Claims it "just works" and that they aren't going to muck it up like the did MobileMe - turns out they didn't do that. Turns out they had months to work out the kinks and more server space than almost anyone else on the planet and they can't get it to work properly. Hence, complaining.

Also, it's not just complaining. It's a verbal holding pattern until a solution is put forth. I want my email. I want it to work on my Mac. That is all.

Mines ok now! Deleted iCloud from the 'Mail' section in settings. And when asked to keep contacts I said yes, and this deleted both 'iCloud' mailboxes. Then I went to the iCloud part of the settings menu (which should now be blank) and entered my details (set it up again) and now I only have the one iCloud Mailbox. Also I'ts not saying anything about incorrect passwords anymore. Seems the problem was that it create the new iCloud inbox after also recovering the old MobileMe one.

  1. Disable "Mail" and "Notes" in your iCloud settings. (We are replacing these two functions with our manual account)
  2. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account... > Other > Add Mail Account
  3. Fill in your name, Address (@me.com), password (for the iCloud mail account) and description.
  4. Under IMAP tab, fill in the following:

Incoming Mail Server

  1. Host Name: p04-imap.mail.me.com
  2. User name: ("abc" if your email address is abc@me.com)

Outgoing Mail Server

  1. Host Name: smtp.me.com
  2. User Name: (again, "abc" if your email address is abc@me.com)
  3. Password: (your email account password)

Next then Save. If everything is done properly, you should have your emails coming in, and notes syncing with your Mac.

If the incoming server host doesn't work for you, you can check the correct one in the Mail.app on your Mac, under "Preferences > Accounts".

Took me two days to figure out this workaround. Hope this solves your problem tooUser uploaded file

ISSUE RESLOVED - well for me any ways.

It would seem that there have been a lot of us that are having problems retrieving our emails after porting our accounts from Mobile Me to the iCloud.

It wasn't until I set up my daughters account on the iCloud that I realised that passwords MUST include at least one character in UPPER CASE. So I changed my password accordingly & all the issues have disappeared & I am able to receive & send emails as before.

Hope this sorts out your problems too.

Mike
