I started having the same problem a few weeks ago and it won't stop asking me for my password. Tried deleting the keychain, Mail prefs and my iCloud account on my Mac but it doesn't help. Even tried changing my password twice but the same ****** problem still bugs me. Apple needs to adress this issue soon or I will start using Google again.

This is not insurrmountable. There are a few things you can try. First make sure your incoming server is:

imap.mail.me.com - SSL checked only Port 993 (default)

outgoing server is smtp.mail.me.com - Override default port 587 - Check SSL

Note: your outgoing port may be different based on your ISP. Try unchecking the override as well.

More Options: Use incoming...

There has been some talk about changing your iCloud password to the new requirements. This has met with some success, as has deleting the account after this is done and re-adding it back clean.

The establishment of iCloud changed a few things, and the Outlook interface needs to be adjusted to accomodate them. If you work at it a little you can settle this into something manageable.

I am personally loving the iCloud instant update across my computers, iPad, and iPhone, and consider it a major upgrade from the Mobile Me cluster. I do not deny it has been a very unnessisarily bumpy road to get here, and have great sympathy for everyone on the path. Don't give up.

Cheers: Justin

I have been fighting with the same thing on my uncle's macbook pro since iCloud was released… on his iPhone and iPad everything worked flawlessly from the beginning, no problems whatsoever with iCloud email - but mail.app on the macbook kept asking for the password (it was driving my uncle nuts).

I tried numerous things: deleted the account again and again, deleted the keychain, changed the password twice and even reinstalled Lion (that fixed it for a while - but of course the issue came back).

The ONLY thing that worked was to manually set up the account as an IMAP account (see xairbusdriver's post on page 7). I had to enter some non existant email-adress first and after the connection failed I could proceed to manual setup. Since doing that the password-promt has not reappeared. A couple of weeks have passed, so I'm pretty confident that the issue won't come back.

Just wanted to share what worked for me :))

PS: when I did the manual setup I also changed the incoming server from p01 to p02 because I figured the server might be the culprit (me and the rest of my family is on p02 and p05, my uncle was the only one on p01 - and the only one who had problems….).

Thanks for the tips Paxfax. I can't change the incoming as it is greyed out. It's using p01-imap.mail.me.com apperently but I'm not sure how I'm able to change that to just imap.mail.me.com.

Sweet-jane: I have tried to delete my account details in Mail and iCloud prefs and re-entered it again but the same thing happens every time I start Mail and on and off during the day. My password is accordingly to Apples requirements so I can't think that this would be an issue.

Johnny, just deleting the account and letting Lion (mail / system preferences) create it again doesn't solve it - the problem always comes back right away, as you said.

What I did is not letting Lion create the account again but creating a generic IMAP account myself. That's quite a hassle though because on Lion there's no manual option - once you enter your iCloud-details Lion takes over (and creates the same issue all over again....). That's why I entered a wrong email-adress first, than mail.app told me it couldn't connect and then I could enter all the details by myself.

On page 7 of this thread xairbusdriver explains step by step how to do it - might be worth a try 😉

Good luck!

I have tried all the suggestions here. It seems to work for a day or two then it's right back to all the problems. Like keeps asking for password and I have to use froce quit to exit Mac Mail. The only way Mac Mail works correctly is if I delete iCloud (Mac mail account). I am totally conviced that iCloud is the problem. Never had any problems with Mac Mail until iCloud came along.

I agree. I have implemented changes suggested here, from Apple Support, and other sources online. They may (or may not) work for awhile, but the issue ALWAYS resurfaces.

Apple has yet to "officially" acknowledge this issue (reminds me of the substandard eMac video components around 2005). Until they do, their patrons will continue to bear the frustration. They'll eventually fix it, but many will jump ship before that happens. Based on their financial reports, I am guessing they are not concerned.

As I type this, Mail.app is telling me my password was rejected.

Hey, in the scheme of things, it's small potatoes.

Hi, try this one, it works for me.

In mail app preferences, accounts, bottom of the page, there is a setting called "TLS Certificate".

I selected a certificate whose name is my username with (MobileMe Sharing Certificate) attached.

Not asking for my password anymore 😎

No idea if this setting has been there before, but it worked!

I got this reply, used it (the first part before the "or"), It works, but it is not a permanent solution bec the problem eventually returns:

Keeps asking for iCloud password (iOS 5)

What you all need to do:

change apple password first.

Then go to www.me.com to log into your mobile me account using the new apple password. Then it says you can use your icloud account www.icloud.com.

On your mobile devices delete the account. And then create it again using the new apple password.

When that is done... it should be fixed.

or

Reset and change your password on https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/ and it will be fixed.

Some accounts has that issue after the iCloud migration only for Mail.

It works !

I too have "done everything else" - and it worked for a while and then came back. Very annoying BTW.

Someone suggested that in Outlook I go to Advanced - Security, and choose None Selected from the drop down menu under Digital Signing - Certificate.

So far it has worked for me. Interestingly I only have had the authentication issue with Outlook. Apple Mail has been the go-to savior through all this while Outlook has been freaking out with iCloud.

I have noticed one other thing....if I am running Outlook for the same email account on other computers in the house (I have 3), I get the problem more often. This is particularly evident if one of them has the screen up that says unable to authenticate and I haven't clicked Cancel. So far though...the Certificate thing has smoothed everything out....for now anyway....
