How does one change the picture icon in iMessage?
As I know, iMessage takes the info from your address book (as it synchronizes it with apple servers), so you should change your picture or your contact's pictures there.

For some reason, my iMessage user icon is my husband's picture, even though I am using my email (with a different picture) and my own Apple ID.
To change the picture icon in iMessage, you first need to create a new contact in your address book directly on your iPad with all of your information and make sure to select a picture. Once that's done, go to settings. Click on Mail, Contacts and Calender. Scroll where it says, My Info, under contacts and select your name out of the contact list. Your picture will now appear in iMessage. I believe iMessage defaults by your last name and searches it in your address book to locate you which is why it selected your husband. You guys should be all set from here. Thanks!!!
Thanks, I'll give that a try! I don't know how it ended up using my husband's picture, though, since I don't use his last name. Maybe it's because we used his Apple ID for everything. After upgrading iOS, I started using mine for iMessage, but iTunes and iCloud are still under his.
I'll let you know how your solution worked!
Okay cool! I hope it works for you. It worked on mines so I'm sure it will!
It worked! Thanks!
Thanks for the info.. This worked for me as well
Finally, the right answer. Both my and my sister's iPads had that glitch because we never added ourselves to the contacts book, but added each other. So, naturally, we ended up swapped. Part of the initial setup of the iPad should include adding yourself to the contact book and setting yourself properly in mail/contacts/calendar.
how does iMessage workes? do all devices that want's to communicate have to be on the same wi-fi or what?
Nope. Messages you send get to the user very much like texting. I added my nephew and niece by phone number and email address when they visited, and now all I have to do is pick them in a list, fire off a message, and it shows up on their iPhone.
okay 'cause i have an ipad not 3g but at my house i've tryed to send a text message using iMessage to my uncle who has iPhone 4s by his email but it didn't work.....
Has he upgraded to ios5 and registered that email address with iMessage?
Thanks! I was getting a picture of someone else in iMessage and the answer from Shantell85 worked perfectly.

his iPhone 4s came with ios 5
but he doesn't know how to register his email address with iMessage ... so how?
When you open the iMessage settings, you will be prompted to sign in with your AppleID. You will then be able to add the number and email addresses you want to have associated with your iMessage account. You'll see that it's very easy to do.
