Wi-Fi Personal Hotspot Not Working Under iOS 5

I have tethering on my contract and regularly used my iPhone 4 as a Wi-Fi hotspot under iOS 4. I upgraded to iOS 5 and found straight away that the Wi-Fi functionality with the personal hotspot doesn't appear to work. However tethering using the Personal Hotspot with USB and Bluetooth work fine.

As before, what I've found is that either flicking to and from the "Personal Hotspot" page or switching the Personal Hotspot "Off" and then "On" causes the "Wi-Fi" status under sttings to change from "Not Connected" to "On" but this time no Wi-Fi enabled device can discover the phone. The difference I've noticed is that the Wi-Fi status is "On" a far shorter amount of time than under iOS 4, but this should be long enough for discovery.

I tried changing the phone name, as mine has a space in, and although the phone worked as is before I've heard this can be a problem. Briefly (a few seconds) the phone was discoverable from a laptop using Wi-Fi and then disappeared for good. I've reset the phone network settings and there's no change.

Any other suggestions?

I was almost there, but still missing it for two days. Then your post made me rethink and bingo!

I set my cellular data APN, so Internet was fine on iPad, but I left blank my Internet Tethering APN the first time around. When I set finally set it, now all works like a charm.

So, my tip is CHECK BOTH APN settings!

It seems so obvious now, but it cost me two days to figure it out :-(.

I was too quick to blame it on bluetooth. Turning off bluetooth helped, but my iphone still dropped wifi after an hour or so of use.

I wonder whether this is an overheating issue with the wifi hardware? Maybe turning off bluetooth helps reduce heatbuild up in the phone. I falso ound that cold-soaking my iPhone in the deepfreeze fixed the greyed-out wifi problem, and also meant that personal hotspot kept working for much longer before it dropped the connection.

Now I am not sure if it has been answered but if you uys are in the UK and when you go to

Settings -> General -> Cellular ->

If you find that it says Setup Personal HotSpot, please speak to your provider and request for IPhone Thering service on your account.

Once that is applied, they will tell you to go to

Setting-> Carrier-> turn OFF Automatic and select any other mobile network then what it should be, once selected any other network, it will say NO SERVICE on the top left corner (wait for few minutes) and then select the RIGHT network (your mobile network) and then toggle ON Automatic

Now when you go to

Settings -> General -> Cellular ->

you should find PERSONAL HOTSPOT (toggle button set to OFF), turn it ON and you are golden

Hi everybody

As far as I can tell, turing off the WiFi chipset when it's not used for a while, is an important battery safer technique. Most (older) iPhones therefor automatically stop providing a WiFi connection if it's not used for a while.

In contrast to most users reports, I can get a steady WiFi signal from iPhone 4 Personal Hotspot, if I connect to it via Bluetooth **and** WiFi at the same time: Apparently the Bluetooth connection prevents the iPhone from entering a deeper "sleep mode."

Anyone else getting the same?

Cheers,

M.

For months I was unable to establish a connection using my personal hotspot but this solution from Leighinsydney worked for me:

"I had the same problem after countless times speaking with my network provider and searching around I found that the solution that worked from was to change my my phone name as Apples adds an apostraphe 'to the name for example

joe becomes joe's Iphone

go to settings >> General >> About and take out the apostraphe

Turn hotspot off and back on

hope this works for you as it is very frustrating"

Yes, this worked for me :v

My Hotsopt over the wifi was working but I changed the name to Assassin's - after that my PC wasn't able to detect the hotspot. After that i changed my name to Assassin - Mystically the Hotspot was discoverable by name of Asssassin not the Assassin's...

Hope try to swap using the xxxx's & xxxx as ur name hopefully that will workout for you :-)
