iMessage not working on iPad

Well I have successfully upgraded both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 to iOS 5 however the only feature I can not get to work properly is the iMessage. I can you iMessage on my iPhone no problem between other iMessage friends. The problem is being able to do like they advertise and be able to pick up on the iMessage from my iPad.

I did seem to notice that the iPad likes to use email addresses instead of phone numbers is that true?? If so does that mean on my iPhone I need to start an iMessage using email instead of phone number? I also tried sending an iMessage to my friends apple I'd email that has iOS5 and it's says he does not have the ability to use iMessage with that email (in red with ! Next to email and phone number). To me that seems to silly and not apple like. So I am hoping that I am missing a setting or something to get this fixed.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Caleb

I've been searching the forums for 2 days and I haven't found a consistent explanation to the issue. The subject posts are expanding exponentially! Apple definitely needs to publish a guide as to how the service is supposed to work and how to properly configure your devices.

That said, here's my situation. Both my wife and I have iPhone4 and ipad1. (I didn't pluralize these on purpose to avoid confusion with the 4S model!) All devices have been updated to ios5 I have checked and rechecked settings on all devices to make sure they're the same. (Obviously we have different apple IDs, but you know what I mean.) I've "hard" rebooted them, signed out and signed in to iMessage, etc. I've tried most of the suggestions in the forum posts.

In a nutshell, the results have been inconsistent, with the iPad mostly not receiving the messages. If I send her a message from my iPad, it will go to her phone, but not her iPad. It did work twice this morning, then an hour later did not work. My iPad/iPhone messages were syncing properly (?) until today.

My only conclusion at this point is that there are a few niggles in the iMessage workings, that there's much confusion as to how it's designed to work and how to properly configure it, and we will just have to wait for Apple to provide a definitive guide.

Be sure both devices have same addres in Imassage on both Iphone and ipad.

Take both Iphone and ipad offline and start them up again.

Let your Iphone be the ( wi-fi ) for your ipad an write a message to someone with ios5 from you Ipad.

It will sync. up.

Then go back to your other wi-fi at home/school/work ... it will now be sync.

It was working for me.... hope others can use this 🙂

I called Apple on Friday and after over an hour on the phone, reseting the iPad and verifying all kinds of settings, they put a work ticket in. The Sr Analyst I spoke with said there were a few requests for this issue and that she anticipated it being fixed soon because of that. My messages still don't go through, but hopefully they will have a fix for this issue soon.

I'm having the same problem. Messages sent to my iphone only show up on my iphone. If I send a message from my ipad, it does get sent, but only replies to that message come to both iphone and ipad. I have tried the various suggestions I read in this forum, and did get it working sporadically, but this is definitely not working right. I can't even find an Apple support document outlining the correct steps to set this up on iphone and ipad. I'm hoping this will get fixed soon, as this was the major reason I was excited about iOS5!

I have an iPhone 4, an ipad 1 and an ipad 2, all with different apple IDs. all with differnet host Macs. The individual Apple IDs are used in each set for email via iCloud (.mac and .me addresses), iMessage, iCloud, home sharing. At the start, after upgrading all devices (and host Macs) to 10.7.2 iCloud and iOS5, I couldn't message between any of them.

The iPhone would send immediately without pause but the message would not get to either of the other devices.

The iPad 1 and 2 would start sending but the progress bar would freeze at 90%. Eventually a red notification would show up saying that delivery could not be completed.

I reset all 3 devices, turned off WiFi on the iPhone 4 and iPad 2, and turned on and off the WiFi on the iPad 1. Now the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 are happy and can iMessage between each other.

Notifications work great on both. I restored WiFi to both devices. Everything still good on the iPhone 4 and iPad 2.

iPad 1 is still sick. It doesn't get FaceBook alerts, or Voxer alerts but it does get email alerts and calendar alerts. The iPad 1 can't send or receive iMessages to/from the iPhone or iPad 2.

DNS is the Domain Name Server. That's part of the configuration for setting up internet communications for your device. Generally we all have our devices set to automatically get configuration from the parent device, either the phone company, cable provider or Wifi Router, which itself is set up to be automatically configured. You can set up the networking manually however. Doing so makes it so you can tell what devices are working, for instance, making it easier to debug a system which has 10 or more devices. This is common with larger families, gamer setups etc...

Changing the DNS to something illegal, which 8 8 8 8 probably is, will take your unit off line. Now if the automation is restored, or if the automation is still running, the parent device will reconfigure your iPad or whatever. Shaking up the configuration this way should not be necessary but it seems to fix something in iOS5. That this fix works some of the time should be a really big clue to the developers. Hopefully iOS5.1 or something will make this kind of shenanigans unnecessary.

By the way, this also worked to fix my iPad 1. woo hoo! Thanks.

Okay, now I cleared out all old conversations on my iPhone and iPad, and it seems to be working. I had my husband text me and it showed up on both iPhone and iPad. He is at work and his messages are showing up on both iphone and ipad. I have tested sending to him from both, also. The other thing I did is to toggle iMessages off and then back on after doing that on my iPad. I also restarted iPhone. I don't know what, if any of these, made the difference, but for now it's working. 🙂

Ok add this to the list. When I creat a new iMessage on my phone and select my @me.com email address and send it I receive the iMessage on both my iphone4 and ipad1. If, however, I delete that message and make a new one, this time selecting my phone number instead of the email address, it goes only to the phone. So for some reason it seems if you don't select the email address as the original send point it doesn't work. Replies do, however (using the email method). And yes, the number and email address are listed under the same (and only) contact. Very weird.
