iOS5 not syncing with yahoo contacts

Hi

Since I have done the iOS5 update my yahoo contacts are not syncing properly, any contacts I add to the phone are not uploading to yahoo, but if I add a contact to yahoo it downloads fine. Although now we have iCloud, thats no good to me. I use yahoo mail and need my contacts stored on there.

Is anybody else have this problem or now how to resolve this issue?

Thanks

It will transfer your contacts..Well, it did in my case! If you don't have too much mail, then might want to wait it out. Give it a few days. I had over 10 years of mail...billions of messages...some very important, like the guy from Kenya who wanted to give me 10 million dollars, but that's another story.

So see what happens, if you have less than 500 messages, my guess is that it will work. But if not, you can try this alternate plan....BTW it will also allow you to have a local copy of all your emails for backup...

don't switch to gmail fellows!!

and by the way: if you have to switch, why not to me.com itself?

In my case, I am not doing it because I simply don't have a mac pc, just windows..

but I don't like gmail accounts: I really don't like the that, when it comes to exchanging addresses with someone you met, I say name.surname@gmail.com

it is very "office" .. too much boring.. so many are having gmail accounts..

I still prefer yahoo

btw if you want to stay with yahoo, there is a cheaop solution (not free, alas)

I am going to try it may be tonight.

it's a 12€ / year membership fee

at www.memotoo.com

it allows yuo to keep your yahoo address and sync with that

more than one passage is required, but you won't need to change to a standard gmail account... 🙂

My Contacts were synching when i left the Apple Store with my iphone replacement, cracked screen. But it was just the setup via the new way (slider)

So when I got home i did a restore from my backup. Once i did that I had two yahoo contact folders listed plus the phone contacts.

So i decided to just let yahoo handle contacts and did a csv dump of my phone contacts to import to yahoo and let their duplicate finder take care of the rest.

Their duplicate finder *****. Really I think Apple should include the option to import your contacts on the phone over to whatever caldav account you choose as default.

I ended up with some really funky entries in my address book on yahoo. So i cleaned up those manually.

I then removed the caldav acccount for yahoo. I noticed a contact I had just added wasn't showing up in the remaining yahoo contacts (the contact sync within the mail setup) So i logged into yahoo, it was there. I went into the yahoo mail setup and turned off contact synch, then turned it back on. Still that contact didn't appear. even after an hour. I even removed the yahoo account and then re-added, turning on contact synch. Same set of contacts i had before!

To me it looks like the iPhone is holding a cached copy of my yahoo contacts, it's the same contacts that were restored from backup for yahoo, and it has none of the changes included since that backup was created. Which if so, that is a very poor design. I'm contemplating doing a reset on the phone and starting over. just hate to do that since I have 3 emails accounts on my phone, VPN setup for client offices, remote desktop app that i use relentlessly, etc etc.

Apple can point the finger and yahoo and vice-versa but as a consultant I know that really isn't a solution. Someone needs to step up to lead, work together to troubleshoot both ends, and give the customer a solution.

I have avoided using google products for a long time, i want to keep it that way. If yahoo/apple can't figure it out I'll just setup support for cal/card dav on my server and be done with it.

I've had the same problem since updating to iOS5. After two hours on the phone with Apple they said they would investigate further and get back to me (they didin't). I've sent MANY emails to yahoo and they keep sending me canned response with how to set up contacts, I keep telling them I know how to set up contact but it's just not working correctly. After initial sync it only syncs one way: from iPad / iPhone to Yahoo. Any changes or additions made in Yahoo do no show in i devices. I've deleted contacts, mail accounts, reset app, reset iPad nothing makes this work.

I have been having the same problem. I went into the Genius bar and they claim it works fine. They removed iCloud. They also removed the Yahoo contact and reloaded it. It worked while I was there, then it failed.

I have a contact list of 800+ contacts. In this list I tried to update existing yahoo contacts. I can add iDevice contacts and they will show in yahoo, but not vice versa (unless i unload/reload). Edits to either iDevice or Yahoo do not get registered.

I contacted Yahoo and received a canned response on how to load contacts. Same as seen on this thread.

Next I created a new Yahoo account. It had no contacts. I added the account to iDevice (iOS5) and this seems to work as expected. additions to Yahoo or iDevice are sync, it does take some refresh on iDevice of all contacts (takes 2-3 minutes on my iPhone4s). I press the refresh contacts button a few times (curved arrow button upper left corner of the Contact Groups page). Edits on either iDevice and iPhone are sync as well.

There is something flaky about Yahoo contacts and iDevice. I can't put my finger on it. There might be a time out issue with sync of many contacts. It seems to work on some contacts but not others.

It is a problem because you can't tell which contacts on the iDevice yahoo contact list actually go updated in yahoo and which have not.

BTW as said earlier here. You do not need CardDAV account in iOS5, just the yahoo account and turn on Contacts

Below response from Yahoo support (it does take 2-3 days to respond - but they do respond with a canned response)

From: Yahoo! Address Book <address-book-feedback@cc.yahoo-inc.com>;

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Address Book.

I see from your email that Facebook contacts which have additional

information (beyond just an email address) do not sync from your Yahoo!

Contacts to your iPhone. I also gather that edits you make on your

iPhone do not take in your Yahoo! Contacts. I can certainly understand

your concern, and would like to be of assistance.

If you recently upgraded the operating system on your iPhone such as

with the recent release of iOS 5 software for the Apple iDevice, that

could be the cause of the missing contacts.

You can delete the Yahoo! account from your Apple iDevice and recreate

it, forcing a new sync.

To remove your Yahoo! CardDAV account from your iDevice:

1. Go to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch settings application

2. Tap "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"

3. Tap "Yahoo! - Contacts"

4. Tap "Delete Account", Confirm deletion by tapping "Delete Account"

once again.

How to sync your Yahoo! Calendar and Yahoo! Address Book with your

iDevice (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad)

1. Go to your iDevice's "Settings" application

2. Tap "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"

3. Tap "Add Account" & then tap "Yahoo!". You may already have a "Yahoo!

Mail, Contacts, Reminders, and Notes" account set up, if so just tap it

under the accounts section.

4. Enter your Name, Yahoo! E-Mail address & Password. You do not need to

change anything in the "Description" field unless you wish to. Tap the

"Next" button, upper right hand corner, when you have entered the

information and Yahoo! will verify your account information.

5. Click the "Save" button in the upper right hand corner

6. You can come back to "Yahoo! Mail, Contacts, Reminders, Notes" to

disable syncing for all or specific Yahoo! Services or to delete your

Yahoo! Account from your Apple iDevice.

7. To ensure proper syncing between your iDevice's Contacts and Yahoo!

Address Book, please make sure the "Default Account" account is set to

"Yahoo!" for "Contacts" found towards the bottom of the settings for

"Mail, Contacts, and Calendars".

Please note that CardDAV accounts are no longer needed on your iDevice

to sync with Yahoo!"s services and you may delete them if you have them

set up on your iDevice. If you have them and do not delete them from

your iDevice, you risk getting duplicate contacts on your iDevice and in

Yahoo! Address Book or Yahoo! Contacts.

I hope I have understood and answered your inquiry, if not, or if you

have any other questions or concerns, please respond to this email and

we will gladly assist you further.

Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Address Book.

Kind regards,

Tyler

New and Improved Yahoo! Mail - better than ever!

Mar 6, 2012 10:05 AM in response to perrymsb

Has this been resolved? I turned off synching over the air when I got iOS 5, and have not turned it on since. So I have not tried recently. Anyone else have any luck?

I've also just noticed, my yahoo calendar, no longer syncs over the air....sigh.

Update: I ended up re-inputting my yahoo password into my account settings, which kicked something, and caused my calendar to be updated....

I've having the same issue as everyone else. Yahoo contacts not syncing with my iPhone 4. I have the new 5.1 ios software. I removed my contacts completely, then readded, made it my default. Funny thing is my Yahoo e-mail is working fine, but not my contacts. I'm out of ideas. I guess I could sync through itunes, but that's a pain. HELP!

Mar 13, 2012 12:24 PM in response to mikeguk

Well as one of original posters here...i can tell you it never worked for me...and i worked on it for hours..days.

i gave up and went to gmail...not ideal, but it does work. yahoo mail over the 10+ yrs i used it had dramatic service lockups at least 5 times....no access to my email and absolutely not help. i think this will never be fixed. so either just sync contacts using your computer, or put all contacts in with your phone, as they do sync to your yahoo account when viewed with a computer....def no syncing from computer to your phone over the air.

best of luck

I also faced this problem as one of the early posters. After repeated attempts and following all the solutions everyone heard, found or suggested, I also gave up.

I now synch my contacts with iCloud. For email addresses, that means I have to enter them twice - once in my official contacts, and then in Yahoo contacts just for the email address.

This means that I use my phone more and more, visit Yahoo less and less, and will make it much easier for me to ultimately transition from Yahoo to another provider.

Sorry Yahoo, but you are losing my business (and my $19.95/year for "enhanced" email) and the ad revenue you generate from me because you won't address an issue that is clearly affecting many thousands of your customers.

Adding to the conversation -- I have iOS5 on my iphone4 and Yahoo contacts do not sync to the phone. The suggestion to turn off icloud, delete and reinstall Yahoo + make Yahoo the default did not work for me. There must be some other setting. I've also been to the Genius Bar at the Apple store and they claim the problem is with Yahoo. Also, I tried exporting contacts from Yahoo but get a blank screen after the export to Outlook format request -- the screen error says that private information cannot be displayed in a frame. Any other suggestions? I also use gmail but prefer Yahoo. In either case changing from Yahoo means reentering a lot of contacts. I'll keep watching this conversation with the hope that someone comes up with an idea, or Apple/Yahoo fix it. Thanks.
