I'm not a hardware person but I wonder if the Ipad 1 just can't handle IOS5. I have a number of friends with Ipad 2 and they have no issues with this. I get much better performance with options off, i.e.; gestures, notifications, photosync, keeping my tabs to no more than 3. I understand 5.0.2 is out in beta and though it addresses one thing very annoying (being able to delete pictured in Photostream) I wonder if it will address this also.

Hope so but I can say even with this it certainly doesn't render my Ipad 1 useless. I use it every day, often--- and for lots of things I would normally use my laptop for like accessing and using docs and spreadsheets, pdfs in Goodreader and elsewhere, using Dropbox, keeping notes and lists and a lot more (not counting the usual uploading, processing and organizing photos, reading forums, Flickr, reading in Kindle, Nook and Ibooks, using it for airplay to Apple TV of videos, apps, movie choices in Netflix and Redbox, music---actually MORE than I used my laptop for before because it wasn't so easy to just pick up and access and I couldn't just carry it with me all the time LOL). I do plan on upgrading to Ipad 3. I'm a longtime PC person but the Ipad changed the way I use computers.

I dont get it. I along with several other people posted exactly what is needed to do to stop the crashing issue with Ipads.

YOu must to a DFQ Reset, and set the ipad up as a "New Ipad". Then start downloading all your apps and put your stuff back on.

Apparently the upgrade had issues with certain apps that reside in the memory of the ipad. Its these that cause the ipad to crash. Other symptoms include shortened battery life etc..

If you do this "right" , your ipad will go back to working properly.. I did it and my ipad hasnt crashed since.

A restart, even a resynch "WILL NOT WORK", you must do a DFQ RESET, and SET THE IPAD UP AS A NEW DEVICE>>>

George, with all respect. There are many of us who have been the route you have, many times now. Three for me. And while there has been some improvement in my case, by no means is the issue cured. I'm glad it worked for you, but this one appears to be very subtle. It may well be more than one thing. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple support and the helper I had, a fine guy named Kareem ( ask for him - he's genuine and authentic) took the question higher into the reaches of Apple engineering. They confirmed that this is a software issue, likely somewhere in the webkit. It may be a java problem. They know, they are working it and my guess (prayer) is that we'll see something new in 5.1 to give us a hand. No guarentees of course. Good luck.

George, I think you're overlooking that fact that what we're dealing with is likely rooted in several different issues that manifest as Safari crashing. All of my iPad 2s are brand new. All of them crash 100% of the time when accessing my corporate web site and other vendor sites on the Internet.

In my case my developers (of our web site) identified the problem as a bug in the JavaScript engine of the webkit in iOS 5. I can do a DFQ reset and set up as a new device but within seconds after having completed the procedure, if I access an offending web site Safari will crash.

I pushed the the problem all the way to Apple Tier II technical support. I even provided them with the URL to a web site that crashes Safari. I'm told that the issue was referred to the development team. Last week I got a response back and I was told to buy a developer's subscription and open a TSI with Apple. I replied by asking if I could revert back to iOS 4. I got no response to date. So the basic gist of it all is if I want Apple to look at my problem I have to pay them to look at it. I'm undecided if I want to spend the money or look for another pad device that works. For now, all of our new iPads are on a shelf collecting dust as they are useless for our purpose.

Thanks, but I have to chime in. First I only run very few apps (almost all built in) and I have this issue all the time, so the upgrade theory doesn't hold water. No matter what happens if the app is not run after restart it is NOT residing in memory..

Second even if that was the case (and others have already pointed out its not) I will add my voice to ones that would chuck the iPad before I spent time resetting it up. I love the device, but seriously not going to dedicate that kind of time.

Sounds a lot like MS saying go from WinXP->Vista->7 to upgrade, which is why I just stuck with XP in the first place!

Dec 15, 2011 10:07 AM in response to Edmund Pirali

The XP/Vista/7 is a good point, and I know of many PC users who have either stayed with the mature, well behaved XP, or rolled back to it following problems/device incompatibility eps with Vista or Windiws 7. If only we could 'Roll-back' iOS to a more stable version, but unfortunately, Apple are not providing a legitimate method to do this. If they could, it would be a welcome work-round for those of us that find the problems adversely affecting the usefulness of their devices, until a proper fix is produced. (If ever that day will come).

I also echo a previous entry to this post that it seems strange that the technical press seem to have been silenced on these issues. Almost enough to make me a conspiracy theorist!!!

I better state that I didn't mean chuck it as discard it. I meant I would want to literally "throw it". I've become too used to using it to not have one and Ive tried a friend's Asus Transformer and it just doesn't offer many of the apps I use daily. I use very few native apps, only Photos, mail and Safari but many 3rd party ones. Many work exactly as intended and never crash. The ones that do load a lot of content like news apps and similar. I assume 3rd party browsers also act this way but I haven't tried them (Icab, etc which I do have). I can't imagine Apple won't fix this. The above is the first time I've heard of Ipad 2s acting the same. But then my friends may use other apps and not the browser so much or is it fairly specific sites?!?! (Still not good).

Do not feel bad. I have been ready to toss my iPad out the window ever since I made the mistake of updating to iOS 5. I have updated to 5.0.1 and it is just as bad as before. I have tried everything that you all have been suggesting and it still crashes. It was a wonderful machine before the update. Now? Not so much. I did leave feed back to them about it as well. I hope that if enough people do, maybe Apple will wake up and do something about it.

I take solace in the fact that Apple never did anything well without Jobs, and it is indeed refreshing when you don't expect anything to happen.

This is the worst scenario with Apple's iron grip on its platform -- no downgrade to a perfectly workable iOS4, which basically rendered my iPad into something less useful than my Nintendo Gameboy.

I hope that Linux and Windows are as good as advertised, and are easy to get used to again when I eventually abandon Apple.

Well, with Adobe giving up the ghost on Flash and more acceptance of HTML5 I think that will be a dead horse.

I find the crashing on my Ipad one, which is loaded, is very inconsistent. I have had very few crashes (maybe two) for the last two days and I can't find a pattern as I'm using Safari just about the same with visits to the same sites. In fact I've used it and a couple other apps for the last 2.5 hours and haven't crashed even once. I still haven't tried Icab again--noticed it just got an upgrade but I had understood that all the 3rd party browsers are based on Safari so.... Maybe somone else can comment on that as I'm just repeating what I read.
