aimeefromtopsham,
I acknowledge that you still have a disturbing problem but am surprised to hear you are also having it with your iPhone 4S. I now have the iPhone 3s and iPhone 4S (from day 1) and both an iPad 1 and an iPad Gen 3. My crashing got better on my iPad 1 with the most recent updates to iOS 5+ (still have some, but doesn't dominate my experience llike it use to). I never had a crashing problem with my iPhone 4S. My iPad 3rd Gen rarely crashes and I'm discovering it's more of the responsibility of the Website Design or Application design then the hardward or iOS operating system.
Yes, first gen iPads (and even iPad 2s) don't have the same amount of RAM as the iPad 3. So websites and apps that are not optimized for iOS properly will crash more. But they should not do so unreasonably anymore, like they use to. As for your iPhone 4S crashes, makes me wonder if you have a bad setting or assigned port, or need a reset. (not just turning power off, but actual reset of settings or reinstall). I know several people with iPhone 4S and none speak of a crashing problem. We talk about it, really! Good Luck.

Like you, I have no problems at all on my ipad 1 since updating. I had problems with the original 5.0.1, but not as much as users reported here.
With 5.1 I have no problems whatsoever. As a programmer, I know that sometimes you just have to switch off... and about once every ten days (when I remember!) I restart my ipad with a full power off.... nothing bothersome though.
My faith is restored, although I would have liked a response from Apple.
I doubt that Apple would have ever acknowledge working on the problem; they didn't want to promise that they will fix the issue, as most iPad 1s were out of warranty anyway so I'm sure they thought they had no obligation.
I think the bigger issue is that Apple is not allowing downgrading of the iOS version on the machines. This gives them an unprecedented power to make products obsolete. new iPads look snappy and all fine, but remember that Apple can, at any time, make it look horribly old and slow.
I'm again happy with my iPad 1, but I'm not upgrading OS on it ever.
ElGrillo,
I purchased my IPad 2 last October and it has worked wonderfully and never crashed until just recently, now it is happening several times a day, so I hope this does not happen to your daughters iPad, it still could. :(
yes, my iPad 1 constantly crash after upgrade to ios 5.0.1, ump grade to ios 5.1. safari is working fine, no crash anymore.
There have been almost 26000 views on this topic indicating that apple does not care that their software does not work on yours or mine IPad. Apple broke my IPad. It used to work just fine until the IPad2 and the new os5.01. Then over night neither mine nor my wife's $800 machine worked well. Both immediately started crashing while on the internet. And yes we did all of the following:
Clearing Safari cache
Clearing Safari Cookies & Data
Clearing Website Data
Turning off Java Script
Turning off Block Pop Ups
Turning off iCloud (or deleting iCloud account)
Turning off or disabling all Spotlight searches
Turning off Multitasking Gestures
Closing Apps
Reset All Settings (via Settings/General/Reset)
Erase All Content & Settings (via Settings/General/Reset)
"Restart iPad" - by depressing Sleep/Awake buttons, until red slider appears to turn off iPad
"Reset iPad" - by holding Home Button and Sleep/Awake button at same time, for 10 secs until Apple logo appears
This is software issue that Apple is ignoring. I think it was broken intentionally by Apple software developers on the basis that one day it worked and the week after IPad 2 came out it didn't work anymore. Sure, I love conpiricies as much as you do. I, for one will not buy another Apple product until this problem is addressed. Given that over 25,000 people have reviewed posts about this proble, I would say that Apple needs to fix their f@@ing software. It's pretty clear there's a worm in the Macintosh.
iPad 3 works fine. Did Apple build the safari to crash on earlier IPads? It crashes on one and two on a regular basis and worked fine prior to OS5.01. It needs to be fixed.
I just want a product that works. If it crashes regularly it isn't working. And Apple isn't addressing the problem.
after going through a nightmarish period due to iOS5.0.1, I'm quite happy now with iOS5.1 -- not as good as iOS4, but useable. I don't, however, use Safari -- just too slow and still crash-prone.
Although Apple came through somehow, I have lost confidence in their support for even slighly old hardware. I'm not upgrading the OS on my iPad 1 ever again.
Views mean nothing, nada, zilch, bupkus.
Here it is June 16th and it's still cashing, apple needs to fix this, something is wrong!
Running iOS 5.1.1 updated on may 25th

I havent been using either my iPad2 or my iPad3 so much for urfing so I hadn't noticed the crashing Safari issues until recently. I've been working on setting up a mobile version of my own site (now in Wordpress) using WPTouch. It is not a image intesive site when using WPTouch and using my iPad2 it works fine ibut on my iPad3 (with no other programs running) it crashes right after it finish loading. I guess I need to see how many javascript actually are running but to me it is weird that for examle my HTC OneX has no issues looking at the mobile site but the iPad3 has.
FWIW - same happens with Chrome on the iPad3 so it is probably a webkit issue or a more general IOS issue.
I have an iPad 1 running IOS 5.1.1. I have observed that over time this problem has become much worse. At first it only crashed when I was surfing flickr via safari. Now safari crashes almost immediately after it's opened. Also, the problem now affects other apps. For example, AppStore crashes so quickly I can't download updates. ABC Player is also a big problem. I thought perhaps there were appse running in the background that may be causing the crash. So I tried closing all apps running in the backgroud, cleared cookies, cleared history the problem still persists. At this point it is so bad it has virtually rendered my iPad unuseable. I have been an extremely loyal Apple customer and this is really disappointing. If one didn't know better, one might think Apple did this deliberately to drive customers toward buying newer products.
I agree, mine has been just randomly shutting down, today it crashed three times but this time it doesnt lock. used to it would go into lock mode, the really need to come up with a fix for this, Ipads are too expensive to pay $600 or more on to last 9 months or less 😢
I've been experiencing the same thing but it ony happens on certain web pages. can any one perform a real quick test for this? Go to google.com, look up Fallout 4. An ign web page will be reference for the ps3 stating what Bethesda can learn from skyrim for fallout 4. Click on the link, does safari crash for you too?
