I've been experiencing the same issues on my iPad 2 (16GB) since I first got it (almost 9 months). Over that period I've noticed that the random crashes tend to happen at a time when apple is about to release the next versions of the OS. Perhaps it has something to do with apples servers becoming busy/overloaded and then somehow interfering with safari (or some other process that uses the internet)?

I also have an iPhone 4S and also noticed that during these times especially my battery drains really quickly 😟

I am still having the same issue with my iPad 1. I have talked to Apple support several times and visited the local Apple Store Genius Bar. Every expert that I have talked to offers a different solution. Sometimes contradicting previous "expert's" advice. They have replaced my original since I have Apple-Care.

No one has admitted that it is a design flaw with OS 5.

I will try the tips mentioned in the referenced link at www.apartmenttherapy.com

By the way, I have found some Facebook pages have caused the problem almost 100 % of the time.

I have also had this forum link to crash (return to the home screen) ! Even in the Apple Store !

Well, it seems this problem is never going to be fixed. I recently contacted iTunes for the same problem as App store and iBooks are some of the apps crashing and this was their answer:

Thanks for getting back to me and for providing me the requested details.

You know this mess has been going on over a year, closer to two, and nothing is fixing it. Apple brought a great product, IMO, to market. iTunes, fr the most part, brought great aps. We all love the lack of viruses. These pads, ALL versions, are becoming useless. Rather than find out why, they keep pumping out new ones. I want to upgrade from my original one but why? When I read all ths, I will be furious if the new one crashes like the original one. Sickening, to say the least. Class action anyone? Enough is enough. I know how to 1. Reset 2. Restore 3. Reboot 4. Upgrade 5. Turnoff book marks 6. Thrw this piece of dung into the waste bin. I am at 6.

For those still having problems with their iPad crashing, there is hope! I was in the same position regarding my iPad1 being rendered useless. Once I decided to do a complete restore to factory settings with iOS 5.1, my problem was fixed. I have been going for close to 6months without a crash. I know this is a pain in the butt and should not be like this, but this did fix my iPad1.

All you are doing is freeing up some resources. Eventually the crashes will come back. I just go back to that same page after a crash and it sometimes starts working, but some sites are unusable. I've done it all, turned off everything I don't use or what is new with 5.1, complete wipe and restore, resets etc. It helped, but they wont go away completey. The Ipad1 just doesn't have enough memory to keep up with 5.1 and some web pages. Even the ipad 2 with twice the memory (512 Meg vs 256M) has the same problems. Web sites are designed for PCs with far more power and memory. There is no way I would buy another Ipad unless it has at least 2 gig of memory. I am also going to seriously look at the Microsoft Surface.

I switched to Chrome on my iPad1 and have had a much better experience than with Safari after iOS5 upgrade on my iPad1!! Safari got sluggish and would crash constantly!! Chrome has not crashed in the past 3 days I have been using it! Seems a bit lighter & faster compared to Safari!!

Best of all, it can load a page in the background ... when you open a tab & try to connect to a page, and want to go back to a previous page while the new one loads!!

Really like the experience with Chrome!!!

This ia being discussed in Apple forums on your site and NOTHING is being done about it.

I have posted bug reports about this before NO RESPONSE. This is not the Apple I know! I have been an Apple used since 1984 and am VERY UPSET WITH THIS!

I assume you have an older ipad? My advice, learn to live with it. I've tried a most of the fixes listed, they provide at best short term relief. Short of a fix from apple, which is very doubtful on an old os, nothing is going to change.

Now if they would only fix the skipping on my five year old ipod classic :-).
