Apple ID after ios5- many problems !

Trying to get the ball rolling for a solution, I sent the following feedback to Apple:

Wow! Won't let me copy and paste from there, so here is a summary:

Downloaded ios5 to my ipad yesterday (iphone4S on the way). Tried to set up iCloud and it wouldn't take my old Apple ID. Went to Apple ID page and followed instructions to locate connected emails (I had been forced by Apple to make a separate ID for mobile me for finding my iphone). Picked an email address for new Apple ID username, and picked a new password. Now my old ID and password have been eliminated entirely and will now work on ANYTHING. I know, I have tried.

Now I cannot update any of 10 (and climbing after ios5) apps that I have purchased previously. Nor can I even reregister my ipad under the new ID. Everytime I try to do something that was connected to my old ID I get a message saying I have to use that ID....WHICH DOESN'T EXIST AND ISN'T ACCEPTED ANYMORE.

Apple is the one who made me get a separate ID for mobile me, and Apple is the one who changed they way IDs are created (and passwords) and Apple is the one who now says combine all IDs (something I wanted in the first place) and Apple is now insisting I use the old ID or I will eventually lose anything I try to update or change in any way, apparently.

I don't want to have to repurchase all my apps and music, etc.

I experimented by deleting Pages and trying to reinstall it. Only the new ID will work, so I used that. In the past deleting and reinstalling resulted in a free reinstall. Not this time. I was charged. And yet Apple knows it's me. My new ID shows at the bottow of the itunes app on my ipad, and the top in itunes on windows. In the same app all the updates pending still show. But when I try to update them windows itunes says I must sign in with the old ID, and ipad itunes just keeps displaying my old ID, but no password will work with it.

A forum search shows that this ID problem is not new. I was just forced into it because I downloaded ios5. This is not right! If anyone has a solution I would love to hear it. Please don't just tell me I have to repurchase everything. When will that end? Also if I repurchase I lose my data (that's what happened when I repurchased Pages).

I am not trying to causae trouble, but if enough people express their concern by replying, perhaps a change will be made. This is NOT a minor issue!

Thanks for listening.

RESOLVED (for now):

My brain is dizzy from trying to sort this out. But Apple got back to me pretty fast actually. They informed me that I had 2 ID (neither of which was my original one I had for years and years). They claimed the other ID, not the one I am using as my new main ID, was the one to which my apps are tied. After struggling to get a password for that ID, I finally got it to work. I signed into itunes with it and was able to do all the updates.

Of course I still lost my data when I replaced Pages. And now Pages will forever be under a different ID then everything else I have. I may just delete it and never replace it.

My suggestion is that you use Express Support and deal with someone directly.

Good luck. The Apple ID system is still a mess, in my opinion. But they did bail me out of this one, so I give them some credit.

It seems I more screwed up than anybody and I'm beginning to wonder if I will be able to fix this.

You see, after I created a new apple ID that I didn't want in order to get past the start up screw-up, I went to apple ID where I discovered my the password for my REAL apple ID needed to be reset, so I did that. THEN I went to iCloud on my iphone but discovered the ID I didn't want could not be removed without deleting the iCloud account, so that's what I did, thinking I could then log in with my regular apple ID. WRONG! I am in a screwy loop that says my ID needs to be verified. When I go to Apple ID and click "Verify", no email is sent to me to verify from.

Also, my 'username' for itunes doesn't work there anymore but luckily, my regular apple ID (the email address I use) does work. Unfortunately, the app store depends on my itunes username (which is permanently entered when it asks for my password), and no password works for that anymore, and when I try to do a password reset from apple, no email arrives. When I try to answer questions to get a password reset online, apple says the birthday date I entered does not match their records, even though it HAS to.

So now I cannot use iCloud, FaceTime, or download or update ANY of my apps! And, I cannot find ANY help for this anywhere online. I'm supremely angry by this and wish I'd NEVER updated my phone which is now SERIOUSLY screwed up compared to what it was before I got hornswoggled into the jackpot IOS5 has turned out to be.

Oh, and a call to apple support informs me it'll cost me mucho dinero to get any help from them. Thanks a lot, Apple!

Practically the same thing happened to me. I was forced to use a different email than the one associated with my account for years during the initial login process for iOS5. When I logged into Apple ID to try to figure out what is going on it stated that the email address that I've used for years wasn't verified. I went to my gmail account and found the original verification email and clicked on the link provided only to be told that the email account was already verified. I went back to Apple ID and this time logged in using the alternative email I used. When I did this it said my original email account was verified but that the alternative email was not. It had my origanal email account listed as the primary account. I logged out and logged back in using my original email and it said that my original email wasn't verified and my alternative email was verified. I tried clicking the link to verify and it wouldn't work. I have a feeling we are all going to be missing Steve Jobs.

I bookmarked this thead because the website wouldn't let me log in to reply! Finally does now. I was having the same problem. I had 2 apple id's...one that was a "username" and another that was made when I signed up to mobile me. All my app store and itunes purchases were made on the username account. When we updated our phones to ios5, that apple id no longer worked. I couldnt reset the password or anything. It's as if it didn't exist anymore. The mobile me account worked to I used that for the time being.

I emailed apple though the itunes express store. They got back to me with the usual info, they will reset my password blah blah blah.I sent the info they wanted. The next night, I couldn't log into my email. Ironically enough they had reset my password and sent the new password to the email that the password had changed. Anyways, I eventually got the new passwords to both my apple id's (but the other one I thought was my boyfriend's. Upon looking at the email of that one, It wasn't quite the same as his email, it was an address that as far as we know doesn't exist (@man.com instead of @msn.com). Anyways, for ***** and giggles we tried to log into the app store with that other random apple id, and sure enough, it worked! All my purchases showed up and my store credit too! I changed the log in email on it to an address that actually works. I know when I was trying to change my password to my usename account, I found a spot on the manage apple id page where you could enter your email to find any apple id's associated with that address. Maybe try to find that and pay attention to the accounts it shows you...I must not have thinking the second one was my boyfriend's account.

I am still having a problem with the @me.com apple id though. It won't let me verify that email addy, saying it is already verified on another account. I don't have my app store id associated with that email addy anymore, and I can't figure out why I can't verify it on my me.com account. ugh!

This is what worked for me:

- Login at https://appleid.apple.com and choose 'Manage your account'

- Modify your account name to an email address

- Save changes

Now use this new login information on your iPhone.

Also note that this process can be done later as well - or can be totally skipped if you're not interested in using iCloud. You can just use 'Skip this step' on your iPhone to avoid having to enter Apple ID login information. This 'Skip this step' link is visible in the bottom right corner - you may have to go back a few pages to see it.

When updating my iPad to iOS5, I got stonewalled at the AppleID section. It simply could not connect to the server at all. I followed BernardFrancois suggestion, and was able to finish the setup, but it still just hangs at the verifying stage when signing in with my single existing iCloud/dotmac/iTunes account credentials.

Seriously, Apple, did you not expect heavy server loads? This is totally bogus. I had no problems yesterday updating my old iPhone, so I could go to the Apple Store and get a new iPhone 4S. If this is the slip-shod way they're handling the transition, I may reconsider dropping money on a 4S until they get it worked out.

Hacked off at Apple. Again.

I have a similar problem. Upgraded to IOS 5 on my IPad, made the mistake of setting up an ICloud account (realizing later that ICloud is really of not much use to me until I upgrade my MacBook to Lion). This forced me to change my Apple ID. While they are still happy to notify me about apps that have updates, I cannot perfom the updates because they are apps that were purchsed under my old ID. I can't recover my old ID because it does not recognize the password. When I try to change the password it gives me two choices --- 1) having them send an email with with instructions, a link etc. -- try that one and they send an email to who knows where but not to any active email account of mine that I am aware of. 2) Answering a security question -- my birthday. Try that and they tell me that isn't my birthday.

I see that many have this problem and that Apple is being pretty non-responsive. I called support yesterday and got the following runaround: "When did you switch to IOS 5? When did you change your Apple ID? Oh, that is less than 24 hours ago, it takes awhile try again tomrrow." So now it is tomorrow plus 12 hours, I still have the problem and from all the other posts I am seeing on this problem it is apparent that I got a line of bull. Maybe Apple is waiting awhile to solve this one so they can reap some bucks from people who are willing to delete apps that can't be updated and repurchase them.

Anybody having better luck with this?

Give up on getting your original username and password back. I tried for almost a week to get it back and finallly gave up.

It took a whopping FIVE email responses from Apple before I finally fixed my problem, and that only by accident. They kept trying to fix other problems instead of the one I was having but one of the things they suggested I try to fix a problem I WASN'T having fixed the problem I was having.

What happened to me was my username, which is STILL being used on this community board, would not update any of my apps on my iphone because the password would not be accepted. NO password for any of my accounts would work with it. No email verification arrived at any of my email addresses, I had the same birthday response error, and I couldn't change the account name on my iphone.

What finally fixed it was this. I logged into the iTunes store using the new account name & password that I didn't want. Somewhere in the store you can see what items you have purchsed, look around, you'll figure that out. I saw there all the apps that I was not able to update listed under my new account name. If they're not there, then try logging in under other usernames & passwords. Whatever account you find your purchases under, that's the account you want.

So then I went to the 'store' setting on my iphone, and logged in there with my the new id & password I didn't want and lo & behold, all my apps would update under my new unwanted username & password. My cool username, 'mudsharkbytes' was lost, and I now have a much longer and clunkier password than I did before (was forced to add one capital letter as well as numbers) but at least now all my apps update.

The only account I can log into the Itunes store with is my new one. I tried what you suggested using that one. I found the place there that presumably lists the apps you have purchased, but it listed only 7 apps out of the 20+ apps that I have purchased, non of which are among the ones that I want to update. I have no other account to try, so this does not work for me.
