iPad iOS 5 upgrade saying it will wipe all apps and settings

I have a 3GS and a 1st gen iPad. Both the iPhone and iPad were sync'd to the same PC. The iPad has only ever been sync'd to this PC.

I've upgraded the 3GS to iOS 5 with minimal issues (just took 6 tries and a long time), but it's up and running fine now.

I've sync'd the iPad a few times to make sure all of its apps and settings are definitely on my PC. When attempting to upgrade the iPad, I get a message that says "There are purchased items on the iPad "xxxxx" that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPad. Are you sure you want to continue?" I chose "no," and sync a few more times while making sure I don't see it transferring any apps in the process so I'm extra certain that everything on my iPad is in the iTunes on the PC. I then try upgrading again and get the same message.

This time I tried hitting "Continue", however then I get a message that says, "Upgrading to iOS 5 will delete all of the media including iTunes store purchases on your iPad. To preserve this content, apply this update on the computer where you sync music, videos and photos." I obviously do NOT want this to happen.

So...although this IS the iTunes where I sync my iPad, the upgrade process is saying that it isn't.

Any ideas how I can do this without losing all of my iPad app data and settings?

I feel your pain. I have 2 iPhone and 3 iPads with tons of apps and through painful trial and error here's what I figured out during the iOS5 update.

The upgrade process is extremely long for devices with many apps.

  1. IMPORTANT: If you have many apps (50+), make sure your device is 100% charged prior to updating to iOS5. If it's not fully charged and your device battery dies during the restore process, your device will be restored as if it were wiped clean of all data and apps.
  2. DO NOT CONNECT MORE THAN ONE DEVICE (iPhone, iPad, iPod) to your Mac to upgrade at the same time.
  3. DO NOT DISRUPT the restore process or you'll wipe out your device of apps and data. Your device may appear to be doing nothing for 1+ hrs (just spinning) but it's actually still in restore mode.
  4. DO NOT UNPLUG your device during the restore process or you'll wipe out your device of apps and data.
  5. OPTIONAL: If you want added assurance for your data, BACKUP YOUR FOLDERS AND DATA from your iPhone, iPad, iPod using a utility tool like DiskAid (free for students... you just need an email address ending in .edu)

I did like these 2 replies:

1: I don't believe you. It took me about 6 hours...

2: DONT DO IT! It said the same thing to me, and it not only deleted all of the apps, but wants me to repay for the ones I had already downloaded for money. Save your money and dont do it and wait for Apple to fix this problem.

This is the kind of frustation and exasperation i get when using itunes to manage my iphone.

I havent been able to backup my data, specially my 3000 photos.

Every time i use itunes it says or does:

will delete your data. will not recover it. Even doing syncs.

I have countless, were some really, accounts of lost music or contacts In upgrades.

It is the data you cannot recreate that maters. I dont mind going back to apple to reload or even repay for music or apps. Its the photos, notes, contacts, etc. As the add says: priceless.

Itunes reason to be is to sell. Its function to manage the iphone is an afterthought.

Full of misleading and terrorising messages.

Its a closed system.

With no easy way to get it out. There is no usb plug or sd card adapter.

Apple goal is to sell us videos and songs and not to manage our data.

As i understand mac people have it easier.

The problem is that im a computer programer. Im having all this problems and i can understand how some average person, like your mom must feel.

I know apple is the friendliest by far. But being this crappy in the app for backing up and upgrading is not the place to be.

As i would do it, an always do, is to make it bullet proof.

Back up user data and triple verify it.

Completely keep track of apple apps and media.

Do the update.

At the end anything not upgraded, would restore from the backup, And apple apps or media will restore it, even ugrade it,

automatically

Effortlessly,

Without hassle,

Without treatening or misleading messages.

And above else without data loss.

Even if I receive a call or reminder or turn off the phone, or the battery dies, in the middle of it.

(i believe that ms windows does this, Its called checkpoints. I even have documents i made when in MSDOS 3.0)
