iPad photo sort order changed with iOS 5

The Photos application packaged with iOS 4 always sorted the photos by the "date taken" from the EXIF data.

The Photos application packaged with iOS 5 uses some other sorting scheme. Possibly "none".

Can anyone shed any light, or is this a bona fide bug?

I found this discussion by Google search. I must say I originally have bought the iPAD (2) as photo displaying device. First shock was to find out that it was not possible in the photo app to make one's own custom order by simply rearranging pics in albums by touch screen operation. What? "Custom sort" is a feature of even the most basic photo management programs.

Then I slowly got used to the time stamp (photo taken on....) order. WIth iOS 5 everything seems messed up now.

I mean this is the lamest software fail I have come across in a long time. Does anybody at Apple think about what they do? I read that there are people here who have thousands of photos ordered since the iPAD came out.

Now not only do they give a choice of how to order the photos, they also change the way the crap software "itunes" syncs them automatically and without any user option.

This is beyond useless, beyond useless. Apple needs to finally give the user a "custom sort" option. Let them quickly sort photos as you can sort the aps on the iPAD desktop. Easy with your finger.

Until then, the photo app is the user- unfriendliest piece of software I know.

User friendly? Hardly! Sorry, but this is so frustrating...

Hi Bernie,

I use Win7.

What Orthonormal wrote is the way to get that folder to show in case it is hidden.

However in my case that folder is visible even if I check the box with "dont show hidden files".

Maybe because I always work with "show hidden files" that the folder was created as unhidden?

Petr80:I have no experience with network drives. My photos are on an external USB 3.0 HD and logics would say, that there should be no difference between that and a network HD.

If you delete the ipod photo cashe folder, does iTunes not create a new one in your case?

And, a thought:

This problem we are having is because we are not working with a MAC and have to use iTunes, correct?

I mean I have also tried uploading photos to IPad with the camera connection kit and that results in the photos being organized by date. So its not like the iPad can't do it. It seems that iTunes is causing the problem.

I wonder what would happen if you install a previous version of iTunes?

Or,

Is there no PC software available that lets you import photos to iPad without iTunes?

Or a software that at least allows you to change the order of photos on IPad, while it is cable-connected to PC/laptop?

Like maybe photoshop lightroom? (I read somewhere it is realy nice, but expensive, software)

Applebginnr: I primary uses MacBookPro, but I had this problem with Windows 7 as well (I tried Windows just for test).

Unfortunalety is different between network drive and external (USB) drive. Connection between local computer and network drive is with some protocol (Samba, AFP, FTP...) and implementation of these protocol can be problem. AFP is native Apple standard and Samba is on Windows. Both this standards Linux uses with some "trick" I guess. And this can make these our problems.

But USB external drive use the same file format as primary computer (e.g. NTFS for you on the Windows) therefore I don't see any problem - at least I don't have any problem.

But maybe I'm wrong 🙂.

PS: My network drive is on the Ubuntu server 11.10 and connection to Mac is with AFP protocol (Netatalk 2.2 beta 4) or Samba.

Hi Applebgnnr, I do not think the problem is related to the fact that we use a PC and iTunes, because it worked up to iOS4.xx, but stopped working under iOS5. I generally still use the iPS photo app for collections (or how is it called again?) where the chronology is not so important. For pictures of my daughter or other similar albums where the chronological order is just the only one that makes sense, I switch to an app called photomanager pro, which allows for custom sort of any sort, so exactly what I want. It only has 2 issues: 1st, it does not have the same elegant user interface as the apple photo app, and 2nd, it needs to have Location Services switched on in order to function correctly, which by my definition makes it almost spyware. I will switch to something better as soon as I find one.

For the time being, we have to fiddle around with 3rd party software while waiting for Apple to fix a completely unnecessary bug which wasn't there before. Quite annoying...

I totally agree with your wife. This photo sorting issue with iOS5 is absolutely ridiculous and it is outrageous that Apple doesn’t do anything to solve it. One of the primary uses of a tablet is to display photos, personally or professionally, and the inability to do so just doesn´t make it worth to buy the iPad. Many people have tried to provide solutions in this Forum, but even if they exist (as complicated as they might be), it doesn’t eliminate the fact that Apple is just being plain stupid about this… or are they? Maybe the whole idea behind this is to force people that have bought and iPad (and who have thus shown their confidence in the product and the brand) to buy a MacBook as well. The key word here is “force”, and it reflects a lack of respect to the customer.

Or maybe the people at Apple don't read this forum, which would make them even more stupid.

I have installed iOS 5.1, and the order is just as chaotic as it had become with iOS 5. I cannot believe it. Or this is absolute carlessness, or cluelessness about what a basic photo app needs, or cynism, I do not know what drives them to mess up a basic but functional photo app.

Shouldn't we just start spamming them until they start to be aware of this useless bug?

Where would be a useful adress to make them listen?

Cheers

I haven't had a look at iPhoto, but does it give the same elegant user interface? I mean like closing and opening galleries with pinching and whatever those finger spreading and closing is called in english?

I have photomanager pro that allows custom sort, but the user interface is cumbersome and much less intuitive than photo app.

Dammit Apple; I mean: REALLY?

I have basically the same question - where can we make them listen to this?

I live in Europe but I'll be near San Francisco next week. And when there's no other way I'll just go to the Apple store and complain about it until someone can credibly show me that they filed a bug report. Otherwise we might need to organize some street protest when the Media is present on March 16th.

I'm going to try the new OS that was released today to see how it handles photo sorting. I'm also going to try out the new iPhoto app.

We have a bunch of iPads that our Sales Reps use to show presentations of our product folders and they HAVE to be in order. So the old way was to name them Alphabetically and also strip out the Meta Data so they all have the same creation date/time. If the Creation Date is the same it goes Alphabetically. Not sure how it works now.

If it now goes Alphabetically I would still strip out the Meta Data to make sure old iOS devices still work and also Apple may revert back to creation date. It is a huge pain but we like using the Photo Viewer because it is cleaner than a powerpoint, it really works good, the sorting just ***** big time!

We'll see how iPhoto works....then again I still would need to have every rep update their iPad 1's and 2's to new OS and buy an App. Not fun. So, in the end I just always have to work around the iPad stock Photo Viewer.

And, don't even get me started on Cached Thumbnails..... 🙂

alba63, you hit the nail on the head. Forget using the Photos App and get iPhoto.

After all, you should never expect to get all you need from a basic and free application. If you're serious about any subject, the logical step is to get the appropiate App. After all, nowadays apps are cheap; some years ago, you would have had to pay hundreds of dollars for an app that does what iPhoto does. And if Apple makes a 100 million in the process, well, lets hope they use it to keep develloping cheaper and better hardware and software with Jobbs' vision.

I am going to purchase iPhoto and be done with this ridiculous problem.
