Today I created a document in Pages on my iPad, and when it synced with my iPhone through iCloud I lost the last three paragraphs of the document. I went to reopen the document after the sync and it said there was a sync conflict, presented me with two versions of the document and had me choose one to keep. The one I kept was not complete and I have lost the complete version for good. I have no idea why there were two versions saved since I had just created the document. anyone able to explain this issue? This is not the first problem I have had with iCloud.

This question may come a little late for some of you, but haven't you heard of the term "backup"?

Always backup your data, simply means store them in two separate places, best on different kinds of media in different places. And remember - any cloud service is not more secure than you own hard disk: both may fail.

Data on any storage system is in fact not safer than your name written in the sand at the beach - it will disappear, it is only a matter of time!

Personally, I have never had any Apple device in my hand (well not fully true, a friend once let me hold his iPhone for a few seconds), I am using Windows; and for backup I am using IDrive. And I just saw at their web page that they even have a version for Mac too. There are probably many other third-party backup solutions for Mac - they will not get the data back you lost now, but may help you next time the cloud service has a flaw.

Just a small reminder of IT basics from a Windows user since the beginning of times:
Don't worry about backup - as long as you have tested your restore routines!

it is a bug in iOS5. Regardless if you backup or not.

5.0.1 will fix the data loss problem in documents in the cloud. I heared positive reports of devs that currently testing it. It also cures the battery problem and the missing multitouch in ipad1. Google for it, Apple says ios update "available in few weeks".

until then don't use the feature. At least there is hope that it is only temporary.

This has happened to me TWICE now! After spending hours at the Apple Store (none of the geniuses, by the way, know anything about iCloud) and talking with AppleCare, I thought the reason I lot my Pages documents (inlcuding minutes of board meetings that had no back up or hardcopy) was caused when I upgraded to new operating system. I had assumed that my iMac would first back up my iPad, then wipe it clean, put on new operating system and put all my info. back onto the iPad. However, it did not back up, so when it put the info. on my iPad, it was from a few months before and my docs were lost. HOWEVER, since then, I did the upgrade that was supposed to resolve the battery life issue on my iPad, without hooking it up to my computer, AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN! I just looked at iCloud and my document is there, but not on my iPad. They are NOT getting this right, so I have to turn off iCloud for my docs. Too risky! APPLE GET IT RIGHT, THIS ISN'T FIRST GRADE PAPERS WE ARE LOSING!!!!!
